I want to add dubs are puffed up always being reminded that they are "model citizens" paying their taxes and obeying the law like they have a monopoly on that. Well, lots of people pay their taxes, obey the law, volunteer for fire, ambulance, coach little league, town boards, money drives for causes........list goes on and on. No, JW's are not model citizens.

I think people want to believe in an Armageddon
by dgp inthe end of the world (aka "this system of things") has been predicted to happen "soon" many times.
in my own lifetime, and not being a jw, i have been warned that the world would end like six times already.
harold camping predicted one end of the world twice only last year.

Lady Lee hit the nail on the head. Swallowing the whole kool aid package ending in Armageddon relieves them of all present responsibility as far as contributing any extra to society. It means no contributions to worthwhile causes, no volunteering for causes or fire depts...ect..no politics.......all without a twinge of conscience for being a community deadbeat because they are already doing a "life saving work." Years ago I was working a regular return visit, a retired state trooper, thought I was making good progress with him. In a disscussion with him I said there were 5 million of us around the world. He said that was a good number, enough to have a goal and actually make a difference in the world in some type of charitable or noble area. Of course my response was we're doing the preaching work. He said what about right now, make a difference right now, don't stop preaching but help people now. That return visit conversation stuck with me because in my heart I knew he was right.

If disfellowshipping was abolished...
by iamwhoiam in...what would it accomplish?.
a few thoughts running through my head.... 1. the kingdom hall would be open to people who were originally df'd for apostasy, and therefore opening the door for debate without consequence (e.g.
people spreading thier ideas freely within the cong without fear of being df'd/banned).

There would be a rush out the KH door before the Wtower ended. Like blowing a hole in the side of an airplane at 35,000 ft.

I think it's going to be backround checks for anyone that wants to get dipped. Sell that idea as "to be sure they have a good standing in the community"

Billy the...........Good argument and reasoning. Also, those post Christ early Jewish Christains were for the most part still following the Law, otherwise there would have been no argument over circumcision. As late as Acts 11 Peter was revolted at the thought of eating something unclean, that was because he was STILL following the Law, it was all about diet.

just an observation
by pontoon ini see a lot of posts about lack of zeal, slacking in fs, just going through the motions...........i have really not seen that in my old congregation up to the time i stopped attending two yrs ago, but i believe that could be the exception.
however, a bethel career sister and a young local brother, a ms and doing all the right things in the congregation (who i was friends with) stopped at my house, caught me up with chit chat and this young bro told me about his changing jobs because he wanted a retirement.
about 38 years ago when i was his age i never believed i would need a retirement in this "old system.

XBEHERE.........In my old congregation with a lot of kids getting out of high school the ones that pioneered were all supported by their parents. They had no secular skills, not inclined to work minimum wage job, got cars from mommy and daddy, so pioneering was easy. Really it was more of a social thing, going out in FS with their friends and cousins they grew up and went to school with. Couple hrs. service...easy calls, not homes, return visits, riding around our huge rural territory, than off to lunch, mall, tanning saloon, gym. Easy life. Meanwhile parents are beaming that their children are pioneers.

No lawyer here but wouldn't a signed oath connect them to Mommy while Mommy is trying to cut and legally separate themselves?

pbrow---I was baptized in 1968. I think ones baptized in the 90's---2000's don't know the sense of urgency impressed on us pre '75 and just after. Was never super spiritual but had no doubt that the "big A" was going to hit any day, maybe today, momentarily. In fact one of the reasons I got baptised in '68 is because I believed anyone not dipped would not survive, and time is getting short. Back then a lot of what kept us in the routine was that looming sense of urgency. What urgency are Witnesses feeling today?

About 38 years ago when I was his age I never believed I would need a retirement in this "old system." Definitely he did not have the sense of urgency that I had such a long time ago. What he said did not seem to phase the super spiritual bethel sister he was with. Surprised me.
