So I finished reading the Origin of Species last night.....

...oh my.. i am not trying to start a creation vs. evolution debate, but something else really did stand out in my mind upon reading this "infamous" book.

and that is that the theory of evolution is a very complex and at times, logically interesting theory.

it makes valid points as well as asking fair and legitimate questions of the theory of creation.

But I really did want to state how reading evolution AND creationist literature at least affords me the opportunity to understand and respect both arguments, instead of arrogantly walking around proclaiming that I have all the answers as to how or why we are on this planet

Very intersting thread! One of my jw ladies just dropped off a copy of "The neck of the giraffe" by Francis Hitching.

I'm impressed that they went to that length after I complained of quotes out of context, and calling Francis H an "authority"

I've only started it, but get the impression that he was trying to stir up controversy, yet claim a scientific perspective.

Somehow I doubt that they (jw ladies) will read it, even though they provided it.

here i am - born in truth, hard-core spiritual everything all my life, early reg.pioneer, ms, elder, assembly parts, tour at bethel, etc, married now...... i'm trying to examine jw teachings a little closer...... i've spent the last two weeks reading many many posts, info , references on where ex-jw's are coming from.

i'm kind of concerned about a few things lately..... honestly - some points make sense to me - some don't - here are my general thoughts:.

-wt getting un membership for access to library - doesnt bother me - some passports and other governement documents have similar forms and requirements..... -blood issue - some counterpoints to the jw 'rules' makes sense (original intent of scripture is unbled animals, white blood cells similar in mothers milk) etc -however a lot of 'apostate' reasonings and proof are inaccurate.

along with the meticulous details of bible and secular chronology, broadening one's horizons when assessing exactly what this date represents when compared against the 6000 years of human history likewise has merit.

Update on my daughter Ali....Amazing

it has been a few months since the whole nightmare began.. today her cardiologist released her to return to work.

she starts in 2 weeks.

Two elders visited me today...

today i received a visit from 2 elders.

it was the first contact i've had with them sinced i've stopped going out in service or attending the meetings after the 2010 dc in june.

i opened the door without inviting them in despite the cold weather.

Sounds like you managed that well. . .

It brings back memories. . .when my jw ladies were trying to get me to attend meetings and conventions the phrase "help me" was used a lot. As in "We're trying to help you to see . . "

We are very polite with each other and careful not to hurt feelings, but inside I was almost choking on the arrogance of their presuming to know I needed their "help".

Bit late to this thread, but I have "sister issues" too.

All the practical advice is good, but I also understand that (like me) the emotional issues are most important. Like how to live with someone's bad behaviour without poisoning yourself with hatred, and also without passively putting up with the mean stuff.

I think Tec said it best. We know our sisters well, like it or not, and often have the background to understand where they are coming from. In my case I have an "angry all the time" sister, who is trying to project her self-dislike outward, and a "know it all" who is modelling our controlling father's behaviour. When I reflect on my own issues from our childhood and remember my own poor comunication to the family, I can see past the behaviour and through to the women who are doing the best they can. Then I can let go of the outrage at the latest bit of meanness, and respond with a bit more logic and less temper.

i am three-quarters through the book, the time paradox: the new psychology of time that will change your lifeby philip zimbardo and john boyd.

it is taking longer than usual because i am earnestly applying the exercises as they appear in the book.

which means i have to be ready to change my habits...but enough about me.. zimbardo's argument throughout the book is that a person's time perspective deeply impacts their choices and their ability to be happy.

I believe that that something of me will live on after death, and that includes awareness. I've nothing that could be called proof or evidence, but choose to believe this way.

If I'm wrong, at least no-one will be able to say "I told you so!"
