Some Witnesses Enjoy Witchcraft!

i guess i've just been naive.. i was surprized to find that some 'super loyal'.

witnesses i know have been practising witchcraft.. of course, they'd never call it that - it seems that.

when various illnesses arise you get out an assortment.

A elder in a congregation outside of Toronto was removed for his 'spiritistic medical practices. He was an unlicensed practitioner of holistic medecine.

I agree that many Witnesses still fall for this type of diagnostics.

As far as the looking in the eyes... there is a science call Iridology saying that each portion of the eye represents different parts of the body. Discolorations, rings etc indicate trauma, past illness etc.

It is as recognized as accurate as much as reflexology is by some. reflexology is teh claim that parts of the foot coreespond to parts of the body and by massaging or stimulating the nerve endings on the feet or hands you can promote healing in the various parts of the body.

while at bethel as well in a couple of the secular jobs i have held subsequent to leaving 'da big house' i have had opportunity to interact with the press, written and televised.. i have come to appreciate that the press in all it's forms and incarnations can be a very valuable tool but like any power tool if misused or left alone it can run amuck.

for example, you wouldn't believe some of the misquotes and half sentences used during the y2k frenzy!!!

(most of the ones pick up by youknow are examples of these).

AS I re-read my post above I realized it was very 'anti-press."

That is not my intent. There are some very caring journalist who choose to do human interest due to their compassion for people.

The point of the above is not to think of the press to much as an ally. They have a job to do to and often that is their priority.

I am not posting to discourage anyone from working with the media in exposing those aspects of the Society hidden in darkness for so long. Just be careful how you use this tool.

I hope that clarifies my position a bit better.

Those involved in reform of the WTBS or those hoping to use the press to publicize your efforts on whatever issue have to realize that the press are fickle lovers much like a one night stand. They are not involved with you for love nor for a long term relationsip... they want one thing and one thing only.... a good story.

Whether it be Dateline, Wall Street Journal or some B Class college rag or some tabloid magazine, it is only about the story. Little care or concern is there about what happens to you 3 months after the story runs.

They pretty much only care about getting the story and creating an audience. That is their job. You cannot always trust the word of anyone..including reporters. Just because you say on Thursday 'don't print this till Monday' doesn't mean they will wait. If it is a good story and will increase readership you can count on reading it Friday.

I am not saying that the press cannot be useful; just warning people to go into it with their eyes wide open. Careful planning and careful choice of words is imperative in using the press effectively.

Note the Society mostly does it by means of Press releases not direct interview. Even follow up pieces are done that way. This makes it easier for the wire services to pick up and distribute and there is less likelihood of a misquote or miss-statement.

I know several on the board are experienced in dealing with the Press, some balanced & some not as much so. Perhaps these people can make themselves known and should you require help in formulating a Press Release or to prepare for an interview you could contact one of them to assist you.

Toronto's August gathering

once again people were either to tired or to ummm preoccupied to post after the gathering today.. it was a great event for me since i saw an old friend from 7 years ago..another former bethelite who left the org before me.

we were good friends at bethel and it was great to re-aquaint ourselves as free persons!!!.

got a chance to get to know others much better.

Please help me with the forum

keeping a balance in what is allowed and what is not is very difficult and is more difficult if i have to take action against one person when i have let other things go by others.. it would help a lot if we could stop the personal attacks and some of the name calling & insults that are thrown about.

i know personalities do and will clash but please disagree about the subjects being discussed and not get personal!.

if you think someone is deliberately trying to cause arguments please do not respond to them as this is giving in to what they want.

Promoting of homosexuality is not a crime in any democratic country that I am aware, at least not in North America or Britain (the two places Friday is concerned about). His extortion attempt is appalling. In Toronto the Gay Pride Parade is intended to celebrate (promote) the gay lifestyle. Children line the street , water fights break out...generally a good time for all. Allowing Joel to express his personal preferences is not illegal! Friday makes it sound like you are allowing child porn here. Ignore his threats.

Re: peer moderation. T'is a slippery slope my friend. I think it sounds great in theory but it can also be used against people holding an unpopular viewpoint. It would be a great way of muzzling someone. It also presents the danger of this forum becoming a popularity contest. I personally had enough of cliques while in the Borg. I can't help but think that will happen again.

I personally have dealt with Friday and his manner of posting over at H20. I can say from experience a warning wouldn't have helped change him (can a leopard change his spots?) but as Waiting mentioned it could have taken the fire out of his email. I am not saying to reactivate him, but could be something to remember for future troublemakers.

All that being said. Whatever arrangment you deem necessary for your site Simon, I believe most will cooperate...unfortunately you are not forced to make such arrangments for these people it is the others not willing to cooperate.

As always, I am behind you and your decisions.
