Can You Explain This? (Blood)

i don't understand why the wt puts so much time and effort into informing people about the intricacies of blood transfusions and fractions, but they don't really focus attention on the dietary side of not eating blood.

because it was clearly a dietary restriction in the bible and maybe not so clearly in regard to blood transfusions (i'm still pondering this part).. is that ever discussed with bible studies or prior to baptism?

it seems to me that if the command to 'abstain from blood' is so important that people will put their life on the line over it, then shouldn't very clear direction be spelling out in detail about what foods are okay to eat and what foods aren't?

This is a really hard subject for me to come to terms with. I had out of control OCD as a teen and a lot of my issues were related to abstaining from blood. Even now I have trouble being balanced.

So, even though I am disfellowshipped, I really want to understand what God wants. I mean, if he really wants Christians to 'abstain from blood' I am willing to do it. But if that's the case I don't really know how to put it into practice.

How do non-JWs who consider themselves Christian view that command?

Because it was clearly a DIETARY restriction in the Bible and maybe not so clearly in regard to blood transfusions (I'm still pondering this part).

Is that ever discussed with Bible studies or prior to baptism? It seems to me that if the command to 'abstain from blood' is so important that people will put their life on the line over it, then shouldn't very clear direction be spelling out in detail about what foods are okay to eat and what foods aren't? Shouldn't there be a list that is published and given equal importance as the information on blood transfusions?

I've never been able to get a satisfying answer. I remember in the past all JWs (in Canada at least) knew to check for by-products in meats such as hot dogs (weiners), pepperoni etc. But it seems like only old-school JWs do that now.

I mean you either abstain from blood and take it seriously which means doing all the research that needs to be done and being experts on things like 'meat glue' and what does or does not contain it OR you just be like everyone else in the world who claims to be Christian and not worry about it.

Can anyone explain this?

A Major Break Through!

i just wanted to let you all know that i have had a major break through with my mom.. we have hashed everything out and she not only apologized for hurting us, but she also said she understands why we've made the decisions that we've made.. and best of all?

she is going to try to help us both get our kids back.. she had no idea of all the stuff going on with our ex spouses and she's very upset about it.. she said that she accepts where we are at in regard to the religion and although she does hope we might change our minds down the road, she just wants us to be happy.. at this point she still feels she needs to respect the disfellowshipping arrangement and i'm not pressuring her about that.

after all, rome wasn't built in a day and i would say major progress has been made here.. just wanted to let you guys know where things are at right now and a big thank you for all of your support, advice and care through this ordeal..

Yes, this is a huge relief and at the very least I feel like I have some closure. It would be nice if she would relax her stance on communication, but like some of you said, that might happen over time.

Slandered At the Circuit Assembly & My Letter To My Mother

on saturday, my ex husband went on the platform at the one day circuit assembly and slandered me in front of 800+ people.. my jw family is even up in arms because he basically lied and ruined any last bits of my reputation that i had left, the worst part is this was elder sanctioned.. i am really exhausted from all the upheaval so i will get right to the point.

the following is what i sent to my mother:.

If you see my other thread you will notice that this situation has lead to some progress being made with my mom.

As for my ex I got a stupid email from him. This is my reply to his stupidity:

You basically lied through omission with your opening words. You gave the impression that totally without warning I just up and ran off with the kids. You made yourself out to be an innocent victim in all of this. And you did it in front of my kids. To me, that is the part that I can't let go. The honest and humble thing to have done is refuse the part entirely. You are in no position to be used as an example in any way in regard to this situation. The elders who put on the assembly program had a responsibility to thoroughly investigate all the background information. That clearly wasn't done. You should have lost privileges and been disciplined over what happened when our marriage fell apart. The brothers were either very merciful with you or maybe they just couldn't be bothered. But you are obviously delusional to think that people didn't see through to the reality of the situation. As for the rest of it - I'm not going to DO anything. I'm just not going to keep fighting a losing battle. I just want peace.

How Do I 'Come Out' To My Kids?

those of you who have been following my story know that i just 'came out' to my family about being finished with the religion.. does anyone have advice on how to explain this to the kids?

their ages are 9 & 14 and they are very smart and fully grasp all the issues.. they are living with their father who has brainwashed them.

so this is very touchy.. should i just keep being a good mom and just lay low?

Officially I have 50/50 custody but in our agreement it's said that neither parent will pressure them one way or the other. I have tried to abide by that as my ex obviously has NOT!

So right now, I see them when they are not at school, at the meeting, in service, having family worship or otherwise busy.

I just get stuck with the bill because unless I have them at least 40% of the time I pay child support.

My ex is fully aware of that and makes sure to throw enough road blocks up that I can't get anywhere close to that amount of time.

Ahhhh... I like how you think SixofNines. And it makes me really happy too because I have already started that.

My daughter had to dress up for school in a costume of what she wants to be when she grows up. She dressed up as a Vet.

Well, that requires University, right? So I really encouraged her.

She also said she wants to be a teacher but doesn't see how she can do that because of the national anthem.

I just told her that in this day and age her employers would have to accept her religion and that if that's what she wants to do I will help her figure all those details out later.

Is that a good start?

And with my mom, I already told her that with our baby we plan to raise him with morals and we are going to tell him the honest truth about our lives as soon as he's old enough.

We will explain why his siblings don't celebrate the holidays. I can't see us starting to celebrate now but he will be allowed to experience what happens at school and then decide for himself.

Just the same as the other kids. As far as I'm concerned - JW or not - I always wanted them to be free to decide for themselves. Whatever they decide for themselves - as long as it's not through manipulation - I will support them.
