tonight on koin news a portland or station there will be a segment on the jw families that have been murdered recently.

dad was called for an interview this afternoon, but since we're in fl now they had to do it on the phone.

others were also interviewed.

I live in Vancouver, WA...just across the river from Portland. Just watched the segment! The phone interview was particularly interesting.

"Homeschooled" Witness kids.

my son is 13; and i am his teacher (homeschooled).

interestingly, the father was only concerned that the kid wasnt paying attention at meetings!.

You bring up a valid point. I think those of us that have home schooled have heard plenty of "horror stories." There WILL be home schooling parents that fail to do their job. However, many public school kids graduate, academically UNPREPARED to enter college or the work place. The parents of those kids are not blamed...rather, they have the "system" as a ready scapegoat. A double standard.

some interesting comments about the confusion caused by using multiple identities in the last day or two.. i was wondering, as there are some strange sounding tags about, what is the story, if any, behind your screen names?

and what are your favourite alternatives (i thought about being dungeonmaster).

i am 'dmouse' because it's a shortened version of my full name, dean moorhouse, and i used to love the (uk)cartoon dangermouse when i was a kid.

When my son was about four, he asked, "Why does Cupid have a bow and arrow?" I tell him it's because when he shoots people with it...they fall in love. He looked at me and said, "I'd rather be kissed by Cupid." It stuck.

Well, I believe there IS a difference between home schooled Witness kids and other home schoolers.

I've home schooled my kids for six years. Prior to home schooling, I worked (12 years) in the public school system. I can say with some "expertise" (B.S. Human Development) that PARENTAL MOTIVATION has a LOT to do with how children develop (academically, emotionally, socially) in the home school environment. I think you need to look at why the parents made the decision to home school. Was it to academically challenge their child? Was it to provide one-on-one tutoring for a child with learning disabilites? Or, was it to primarily isolate themselves? I have been approached by several witness families, that ONLY wanted to know HOW to satisfy the LEGAL requirements...in other words...the minimum. I live in a state that has requirements that the parent must meet, in order to be approved/have their letter of intent signed. This includes ANNUAL standardized testing. I have explained to many JW families, that they were welcome to participate in a local, non denominational home school support group...well, you would have thought I was suggesting something horrible! Not once in six years, has a JW family participated. Their children would have enjoyed field trips (OMSI, children's art museum, Oregon Air National Guard, a dairy, a factory tour, End of the Oregon Trail exibit, national spelling/geography bees, sign language, etc.) sports, music and other many other activities. Belonging to a home school group, provides support for the familes and offers a wide variety of learning opportunities...not to mention the "S" word...yes...socialization.

I always am concerned when I hear about home schoolers that are NOT doing their job, so to speak. Most home schoolers are very conscientious, completely aware that they are often under the public opinion microscope.

a father killed his family and them himself.

this happened in mcminnvile, oregon just outside of portland, oregon.

Sickos? I'm not at all surprised at such callousness. Six people are DEAD. Us vs. them...even in the face of tragedy.

Idolatry....Do the JW's do it?

Absolutely. Why else can they NOT separate the Watchtower from Jehovah himself. The Watchtower is an organization...but they follow it's directives...and go to great lengths to protect "it". They serve "it" but is "it" God? No. There seems to be a great intellectual dishonesty when it comes to idolatry.

Unbelieveable. ***My disclaimer...I'm not a JW, never been one*** but I just don't get it. Why do JW's think that leaving the org equates "leaving Jehovah"? What mental gymnastics do they have to do in order to come up with that conclusion?

I'm an only child, so maybe my opinion isn't worth much with these sibling issues...but I think I'd take your wife's advise and skip the whole ordeal. Why play the WT game? Some people (family included) are simply toxic...and I don't care what religion they practice...of course, some "religions" are just more TOXIC than others. If you do not agree with this second class treatment, don't subject yourself to it. Just my .02 cents.

my 19 year old son show me a site on internet where they show a lot of pictures from our books, and if you look very carfully you can see ddifrent ocult signs, or perhaps guess it is something like this, someone here who have knowlege of this things here, it was new for me, and very confusing, perhaps i give you the link later.

Thanks for the link. Hadn't seen that one! Reading how some people grew up in the organization and how their childhood experiences were rooted in fear...no wonder, some of those images are downright creepy.

I've seen several different sites regarding WT "artwork" and it's subliminal effects. However, long before I had heard of, or seen any of these sites...I'd always see this garbage over at my mom's house and you know what? From an outsiders point of view...I thought it was some of the most disturbing stuff I'd ever seen. I'm not sure what "it" is but somemething about it isn't right.
