That's where my parents were baptized and they attended the whole assembly and couldn't speak or understand a single word of English. They drove 350 miles following another car and both cars broke down. My dad was a mechanic and he had to fix the cars on the side of the road. The 8 adults shared 2 motel rooms, some sleeping on the mattress on the floor and on the bed springs. We had a picture of the Yankee Stadium on our living room wall with the theme The Divine Will if I remember correctly, the dates and the attendance of 253,922 delegates.

300 books and magazines placed outside The Shard
by pleaseresearch inhi all.. so i got a txt today from a very proud mum claiming that, the jw cart produced 300 book and magazine placements.

I have been watching the cart at a local flee market/outlet shops but I have yet to see anyone take literature or speak to the JWs standing meters away from the cart. It was the same in downtown Toronto last summer where they stood in the busy financial area. Unless they put the literature in the hands of the passers-by I can't see how that experience is possible. -

Did you participate in a Drama?
by Hecce ini am bringing this up because even it was a lot of work, for the majority of the friends this was a rewarding experience.
camaraderie, joking, costumes, props and when the time came the celebrity status of being in the drama.. back in the 50s and 60s, conventions could be as long as 8 days and from about 1966 the dramas became an integral part of the program.
we had one per day and the brothers looked forward to their presentation.

I was in several dramas and except for one I was always in the modern part. The first drama was live and we rehearsed everyday for weeks. I was also used to record the sound track for a few dramas in which I didn't "act". One year my voice was heard in 2 dramas and I acted in one. It was a lot of fun and I loved the "status" it gave me as I was aspiring for service privileges. -

Malachi welcome.
Like you I was in for 50+ years and after being out for almost 6 years I came to the realization that I was a JW because that is all I knew. I did it all to please my parents and was taught to listen and obey. Today I no longer believe in anything that requires having faith including God or an afterlife. I am much more at peace with the certainty that I am growing old and will die than having to follow a religion that cannot guarantee salvation.

My jw friend keeps preaching to me in e-mails
by Queenme indear friends this is my first time posting.
i am not a jw and have never been one but i have a friend who married a jw and converted.
in spite of the bunk barometer going off in my brain over the years and never responding to her efforts to convert me, she just cannot stop preaching.

Preaching to you is her only way to stay in touch because JWs usually do not entertain friendships with "wordly" people. You can be friends but only on her terms...

It may be old news. If he's the one I know, it's been decades, he was reinstated and made a living selling Melaleuca supplements. He died 8 or 9 years ago. -

WHILE I WAS PRAYING . . .
by Terry inone night a long long time ago .
.. i distinctly remember lying in my bed staring at the shadows on the ceiling and saying my prayers to jehovah while becoming annoyed with myself at how rote and over familiar my thoughts had become.. it just didn't feel authentic.
i steeled myself to the task and began again, apologizing for the insincerity!.

Terry, I love your stories. I believe you and I are in the same generation (no overlap) and I can relate to many events and the way JWs acted in the 60's and 70's. It is strange how simple things suddenly make you see the light. One Sunday during the WT study I was sitting next to my grand daughter who at that time must have been around 5. Prompted by her mother she wanted to comment. She was asking me to find her an answer. So I whispered in her ear a one word answer and as she said her comment loudly I came to realize that the only difference between this 5 year old child and me is that her answer was whispered in her ear while I read mine in the paragraph. No need to think or meditate. All I needed was to repeat what is written. I came to the realization that I was not there to learn but to be indoctrinated. It took me a little longer to leave but that was a turning point in my escape from the cult.
