Billy, I think that is a good way for my friend to explain his being interested but hesitant. However, I think once the internet is mentioned all of the sudden my brother will be too 'busy' to call back. But I cant wait till the conversation moves too 'new light' or dates

Welcome!
How do you handle JCs being enlightened? And how do other elders respond to that? I am sure you have at least one story for us...

Black Sheep, I almost forgot you, that is good advice and a great way of explaining their diversion tactics. Thank you

Band on the Run, I understand, and agree with, the point you are making but my main concern is making sure what happened to your father does not happen to my brother. True, I do know him better than anyone; but, I have not had any experiance in dealing with a JW as an 'apostate' and tring to reason with them and that is what I need advice with. Obviosly, I will try to tailor any advice to fit the citioation.
Jonathan Doe, so far seems like a lot of good information, just a lot to sift through.

DanaBug, you bring up a very good point about what 'before' means
Black Sheep, I always like your take on things and you comment is exactly what me and my friend need to help us not overwhelm my brother. One question though, what did you mean by:
Saying screeds on a slightly related subject
Ding, you are right he needs to be careful. I think he has a solid enough foundation in faith to do fine though...
NeonMadman, those are great points but not quite on the subject at hand. I am sure they will help as the 'study' evolves though
Band on the Run, ?????????????????????????????????
Billy, that would be an interesting study....wish I had one
Mrquik, I think we will overall address the validation of their religion; just not all at once
Vander, I have not had a chance to finish the video yet but I will. please feel free to PM me anything you think would help!
Moshe, you are definately right. I tried to explain to him he can either be right or have them come back but not both, at least yet. So far what the plan is is too double check everything he wants to share from his bible by referencing the NWT until he is officialy offered one. It wont be easy but my friend doesnt mind losing an argument if he can win a soul

Wow, thats awesome DanaBug, thank you! I am so rusty on this topic and before when I went over it I was already convinced they were wrong about everything, so sadly I am not as good at refuting their reasoning here as I am on other topics.

I have a friend that is a youth minister for a local church. He has a very good understanding of scripture and we frequently have interesting discussions. We have talked about JW beliefs before and he is always surprised to find that they can really believe what they do. He is not too familiar with their doctrine though.
Even before I DAd my brother would refuse to talk to me about anything biblical. Now he will not talk to me at all. I know that he is smart and would leave givin the right circumstances but the shunning policy has effectively shut me out.
So when I got a call the other day from my friend letting me know that my brother had come by in service and left some literature with him I was pleasantly surprised. From our discussions of the cult before my friend knows that he should slowly prove them wrong so he just listened and then invited them back next week.
What I need help with is what should our strategy be to prove their doctrine wrong but keep them comming back? Even more important is what points can be made to make my brother think? I know he wont be convinced quickly but if my friend can give him doubts it will start the process (I hope).
The topic at hand right now is whether we go to heaven or paradise and the difference between the other sheep and the 144000. So far I have advised my friend to make sure they stay on topic and have given him a copy of the reasoning book.
I will update as the topic changes or the situation does, but with what I have said so far does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? I am worried that we will move to quickly in shattering their beliefs and they will stop listening and coming back

Why do the JWs have such an aversion to philosophy?
by Darth Eowyn ini mean, they seem to avoid it like the plague.
i know people will say that they only need the bible to guide them in life...etc...but i contend that you cannot simply read the bible by yourself; at least without knowing where the philosophical principles contained within the bible come from.
is this aversion of confusing philosophy with faith way over the head of most jws?

January 15, 1983 Watchtower page 27, "Fight against independent thinking."
If you cant just blindly accept what they have to say you need to read the watchtower more to strengthen your weak faith. And why look into philosophy when they are already telling you the truth? Obviously its a waste of time that could be better spent in service

by Crash Override inhow long did it take for you to realize that something was very wrong with the 'truth'?.
for me, it was about 2 1/2 years into studying.

I had always told myself that since the society always took such a strong stance on being directed by god that if they were wrong about ANYTHING they were not god's people. But when I started doing research it was not so easy to break their hold. For me finding Deut 18:20-22 was the 'light bulb' moment. There was no way they could explain away such a clearly worded and straightforward scripture as that. Sadly it took almost another year until I was 100% convinced they were wrong.
