Path,
Your last statement about finding peace, In this place where you and I are writing is giving peace and I hope that more come here and we can help give them a measure of peace as we have given a measure of peace to each other.

this policy is unethical and immoral in my opinion.
however, i can no longer continue to serve the members of my church as i do not agree with a church policy that as a church elder i am required to enforce.

hey all, hope you're having a great year so far.. before witnet was closed down, there was an interesting discussion regarding the fds and their failed prophecies.
i asked a question, but unfortunately there wasn't enought time to get everyone's view.. so i'll rephrase my posts, and wait to hear from y'all.. if we are so quick to say that the fds is a false prophet because of some failed prophecies (even tho they say they don't prophecy, we all know better) then how would you explain the bible book of jonah?.
a faithful prophet, jonah, followed (after much trial and tribulation to himself) jehovah's command to declare destruction on the city of nineveh.
I liked the way that Venice put it early on.
"The FDS was simply an illustration that Jesus was giving about how they needed to keep awake just like all the other illustrations in the chapter. It was not given as a basis of authority. There is no such thing as an FDS class. anyone can be faithful and discreet."

RR,
You said that Charles Taze Russell was "that faithful and wise slave" and then you added "nuff said." Well, it's not nearly nuff for me. I would like you to elaborate on your statement. Please provide some clear reasoning for such a unusual conclusion.
i've really enjoyed the conversations about music, poetry, movies, books and short storys.
i thought it would be interesting to read about little known news from around the world, so i'll start with some from the tiny dot where i live on this ball of mud we call earth.. i just read in the paper this morning that the people of port clinton, ohio are celebrating new years by dropping a 500 pound fiberglass walleye fish into lake erie.
we people here in ohio have a certain panache.. the tornado in xenia, ohio this summer missed my daughter's house by a block and a half.
RHW,
When Money magazine was voting your city the second in the country, they put Flint Michigan, where I lived, at the very bottom out of 300. The city had a public ceremony where they burned a stack of Money magazines. It really didn't change anything, but they felt better. Now, Dayton may not be tip top but it's a pretty good place. By the way, Waiting never did tell us the city or town where she lives. What's wrong with that girl anyway. Would you set her aside and have a private talk with her? You know, how can you make fun of somebody if they don't trust you enough to provide the details you need to make fun of them. Don't tell her I said this, cause then she won't tell us a blessed thing.

The theory of the faithful and descrete slave and the evil slave is just that. It's a theory and it's a theory with no support. For all the writing on the subject, I have to say. There's less there than meets the eye.

Perhaps Jesus was thinking something like this, "I'm going to tell these people a story so that they get the point, and the two people in the story also apply to something that's going to happen in about 2000 years." Seems kind of silly to me.

There is a concept called Ochoms Razor. Sometimes it is called the law of parsimony. What it means is that if there are two alternative explainations for something the simplest one is more likely to be correct than the detailed, complicated one. The explaination I support is a very simple one i.e., the scripture means what it says. To go beyond that takes a great deal of some or all of the following: conjecture, speculation, reference to other authority, and very shaky logic.

A good teacher knows that it is helpful in the learning process to describe a concept, then follow it up with an example or illustration. This method helps in two ways. First, I allows more time to be spent on the subject, which means it is more likely to be remembered. Second, the illustration forms a mental image better than a concept does and mental images are easier to be transfered to long term memory. Therefore, the concept and the image will be retained when combined like this.
Jesus was a good teacher and he used this method. First, he presented an idea, and followed it immediately with and illustration. In the illustration, he told about an individual, a faithful and discrete slave, and he immediately contrasted that with just the opposite kind of individual, the evil slave. Thus, his teaching method provided a powerful leason for those who heard him and for those who read the account today. If you have read the passage lately, I would assume that the imagery is very strong in your mind.
There is no reason to believe, however, that this story applies to anyone, any group or anything outside of the story itself. I would like you to read the story again, with your mind devoid of any influences from any source. Read it as if for the first time, with only your intellect at work. If you draw a different conclusion than I have, I would like you to explain the rationale for that conclusion.
Hey there CA Bob,
Those two books that are recommended will not have any effect on your belief in God. That's not there purpose. BTW, the author of the second book mentioned is Jim Penton, a good scholar and a good person.
Are those fires out there very close to you?

Logical,
Jesus is not the faithful and descrete slave, because there is no such thing. It was part of a story to illustrsate a point, and that's all it was.
