...i was told but they usually were as i look back.. as a lad i'd sit and look to see who the lights would fall on.
i'd get an almond and see how long i could suck it before i chewed at it.
i'd imagine playing rock'n'roll on the congregation's piano.. how did you get through the meetings when you were bored?.
Oh what painfully boring memories of the meetings ! My only respite was when my dad would break open his brief case, unwrap and pass around the LifeSavers candy. I remember before conventions, everyone in my family was allowed to pick out our own roll of LifeSavers to ration for all three days. I always like the Root Beer flavor.
I counted ceiling tiles, read random parts of the Bible, day dreamed, scribbled, and what my mom found most annoying - in order to stay awake I would try to write verbattem what the speaker was saying just to keep my brain occupied. I would be writting furiously in my notepad and my mom would smack me on the leg and tell me tp " quit that!".
so i sit back and look at this whole faith/religion etc as a whole.. isnt it ironic that =satans first lie .. you surely will not die!!
is still being carried on to this day from door to door....hmmmm soemthing worth thinking about!.
My wow point was when I was dating my now husband, and I was trying to explain the JW's to him. I had long since stopped going to meetings, but never really paused to think on the JW logic, but my parents are still "in".
So my now husband says " you mean your parents believe in Noah's Ark?!"
and I said "yes"
and he said, " they really think that every animal , two by two were in a boat and floated around and re populated the earth?"
.....then he kinda chuckled.
I never even had pondered on how ridiculous it sounds like until he said that !
during a potluck for the hotel where i work, two housekeepers got into a fight because of some petty stuff thats been going on (so ready to quit but havent been job hunting like i should).
anywho, the head housekeepers starts bitching at the housekeeping supervisor and then bust out the other lead housekeeper, saying that she smells like a bag of onions!
i did not attend (i work third shift, and only attended event at work the first year that the hotel opened (2008).
In my hall growing up there was a young sister that moved in - she was maybe 18. We smelled so awful - she truely did not use deodorant. Pretty soon EVERYONE was talking about how bad she smelled and that they were going to mail her a random box of deodorant. I do not think anyone ever told her, she got married and I never saw her again.
Truth is ....I never told her either. So was as bad as everyone else!
I am not sure how I would tell someone this - I can only say that is it was ME that was stinky - I would hope that someone would tackfully tell me somehow.
i used to get pretty good marks in high school, until it came to situations that required me to give my own opinion.. my social studies teacher used to get quite frustrated with me when it came to anything political.
we were asked to write paragraphs on how we feel about different issues.
i always did something like: "this side feels this way, that side feels that way, here are the pro's and con's to each side, then maybe some obscure comment that didn't really state what my stand was".
I relate completely to your post. I also struggled with forming an opinion as a teen because I was TOLD what to believe and to not ask why. So my "opinions" became the beliefs I was told. I struggled for a long time and now I love an educated debate ! It takes a long time to feel free to express yourself when you are indoctrinated to supress that.
these are good comments to consider enjoy!.
jehovah's witnesses who leave their religion, do so for many different reasons.
here are seven.. watchtower prophecies and dates for armageddon have failed repeatedly.
Regarding the comment by DY - I did not do drugs as a JW nor as an exJW, I did however drink a lot more when I was JW to mask the difficulties of an abusive JW ex husband. I am , by ALL accounts, a healthier, happier, better educated, kinder and more relaxed than I EVER was as JW.
I live in Califonia and pay Bay Area prices. We do not have a good train (Muni sucks) and no subway. We are forced to pay. If I did not - I would not get to work. Everything is very spread out here....you have to drive. Living in a highly cosmopolitan are would be a bonus if you could worlk and shop and live in the same area. Thats just not the case here.
- some loser once took offense that i hugged a sister goodbye at a leaving do and ran back to the elders like a little child telling on me.
i was 15, this sister was in her 40s at the time.. - this elder said someone told him they saw me with a copy of the sun newspaper.
yes, this paper is known for its 'page 3' topless girls but far from pornagraphic and i wasn't even thinking along those lines.. - one brother who had a good job was 'counselled' because he was actually able to buy himself nice things including a new car (shock, horror!!
I was counseled for wearing nail polish color - other than a shade of red and a long skirt with slit to knee (to sexy I guess).
no, not that sort of 'love'.
how do you feel about animals?.
never been one for pets although when a jw we had our fair share.. these days i just love looking out the window in the morning and seeing the wild rabbits eating our long grass (even though out here we are supposed do do out bit to eradicate the 'pest').
My girlfriend and I are training for a run coming up in a month and we had a 7 mile scheduled on Sunday. For some reason it was a hard run, the sun was beating down on us while were pounded the pavement. Towards the end of the run- we were feeling pretty tired and off in the dstance we see a couple geese crossing the street. As we run closer we can see it is about 10 geese and they have about 15 babies in tow. We had to stop just to admire them and wonder at the impossibility. We herded them off the road and into a dirt lot so they would not get run over.
We were running in a hot, all pavement, quiet industrial area with very little shade, having a tough run, and these geese were just minding their own business, cruising the street. We did not even know of a pond or lake nearby. It struck us both - the contrast with the nature and the pavement.
Anyway - it made us smile and we ended our run on a upbeat note.
on this topic we don't care what you are against.. let's be positive and tell three things we are for which are meaningful to us.. .
1.music lessons for kids.
learning to read music and play an instrument.. 2.memory training and math strategies in schools.
World peace, no hunger and all that is good stuff (which I am all for) - on a smaller and more personal scale:
1. a new cupcake recipe
2. support the troops
3. thin crust pizza and merlot
Great thread !
