  Pioneer Meeting

  i apologize in advance if this has already been discussed here.. at my daughter's pioneer meeting they were told that leaving literature in phone booths and laundromats is "littering".. since when?

  anybody else heard this?.

  Hi Venice,
  From what I heard, the pioneers were definitely disgruntled about it.
  Laundromats are their mainstay here, and rest stops.

  Thirdson,
  If this isn't happening in other pioneer meetings, then maybe it is isolated to the congregations here. It could be that the pioneers here are overdoing the phone booths and laundromats. But, hey, I was one of those who picked up a wt in a phone booth.

  this is clever.. everyone thinks the society are becoming more open as far as education is concerned.. we have had a few articles in recent years which even go as far as encouraging youngsters to get trained, got to college and acquire useful job skills for the future.

  then these are the magazines that the public also read and then think that the jw's maybe arent so weird after all.. but then go to this years dc's and we get the following;.

  Jerry Falwell said that pants suits are the work of the devil and that women were given big hips for child bearing.

  There's an elder in New Mexico who lectures the sisters about wearing knee-highs; evidently they have to wear panty hose. Why else did we wear long skirts except to hide the knee-highs!!

  Our PO came around asking us if any were professional people, with degrees, and such----I was in only 6 years but I knew about the ban on higher education. So the faithful followers were now left out and the borg was looking for those with higher education among the newer recruits.

  On Line Literature (old WTs, Finished Mystery etc)

  i have noticed a lot of new people are on this board and i don't know how many of you were with the old h2o.

  so every now and then i let all you nice people know where you can read books like the finished mystery or the millions book or the old watchtower (pre 1900s etc.

  ) or the other study in the scriptures volumes on line.

  I have The Finished Mystery and the Millions book (also Prophecy) but I wanted The Object & Manner booklet too, and there it was on the first screen.

  What Caused Your First Doubt ?

  for me it was when i was about twelve years old and my best friends dad was disfellowshipped from the congregation.. i could not understand how a god of love would treat someone so coldly.. i used to think what if that was the way my parents would treat me if i had done something wrong, that would be so hard and cruel.. as i got older another thing that bothered me was the beard issue.

  it may sound pretty trivial however the society has always refused to make a good arguement as to why they would give you the old cold shoulder if you were to grow one.. two more items; first i could not understand why all the congregations and all the assemblys would give income reports.

  and the society never did.

  Mr Magoo:

  Someone will know the official standing on beards, but I thought I'd put in what I know from experience (because I asked about it). I was told that jw's could grow beards if that's what the style was around them (in the world!!) I'm guessing that included women.
  Others said that jw's could grow beards but they wouldn't ever be used for anything in front of the congregation.
  And at one assembly a guy with a beard was baptized.
  So, maybe it's one of those unspoken things left to local interpretation???
  I also heard that Rutherford despised Russell, beard and all, so everyone had to be clean-shaven. Then in more recent years in our area the Spanish brothers were allowed mustaches. (Sorry, senoras y senoritas, get out the wax!) Go figure.

  Coperincus: The PO admitted that no one was aware of Jesus' return and seemed uncomfortable so I threw him a bone: Maybe the faithful and discreet slave didn't NEED to be aware of the master's return? Gulp! That must be it!! The elder with him took the fact that this being evident from the Proclaimers book meant that the wts wasn't trying to hide it, ie, was admitting it therefore it must be all right. But the wts doesn't admit it. The passages from the Greatest Man book certainly make it sound like those faithful servants knew of his return at the time of his return. In actuality they missed it by, what?, some 40 years before it? (1874-1914) and then weren't even aware of it until some 20 years after it?
  Their whole authority structure is bogus....they were never appointed as the faithful and discreet slave, they were never appointed over all the master's possessions, they are SELF-appointed over peoples' lives and, when you break it down, they call THEIR OWN TEACHINGS "the truth", not the Bible. Yes, I know, they say the Bible is God's Word; but "the truth" is the "bible-based beliefs unique to Jehovah's Witnesses." So, in that case, yes, they have "the truth".

  Chapter 132
  A careful study of Bible prophecies, including Jesus’ own prophecy regarding the last days, reveals that “the Lord’s day” began in the history-making year 1914, yes, within this generation! So it was in 1914 that Jesus returned invisibly, without public fanfare and with only his faithful servants being aware of his return.

  These two passages led me to the question:
  Who were these faithful servants of 1914 who knew of his return in that year?
  These would be the ones fulfilling the "faithful and discreet slave" parable/prophecy, the ones the master finds dispensing food at the proper time.

  The answer I found, and the PO agreed with, is: no one.

  In 1914, no one knew of Jesus' return in that year. Russell was teaching "present truth" to be that Jesus returned in 1874.
  This continued to be taught for decades after 1914.

  If Christendom missed the "day of her visitation", so did jw's.

  Slapped into submission
  Wide innocent eyes
  Hollowed out from fear
  Supple little hands
  Gripped in desperate appeal
  Eager for life
  Shamed into flight
  Run for a while
  The hook is still there
  Freedom in sight………..
