  i am a former jw, but i still believe what they do about the holidays?

  i have already talked about origins and all that stuff so i wanted to ask something without bringing up scriptual or historical backgrounds for a change.. my question is (whatever your beliefs may be) what % of people who celebrate christmas, if you took the presents out of christmas would still acknowledge christmas as much as they do now?

  I honestly don't think that God sweats that kinda stuff. I suspect He's a little bigger than that. Do you really think He runs to the Gregorian calendar anyhow?

  Most things in life don't have a "great beginning", from religion to lipstick (think: animal testing). Even going to the Gym has its roots in the Greek games which were inspired by exceeding at warfare. Computers and the Internet were originally funded by the military, and what was one of the first uses of air travel? Warfare.

  If you genuinely believe you should refrain from having anything to do with things that have had a not-so "great beginning" you'd be as well heading to a hermitage and becoming a monk. Oops - you probaly think that has pagan origins, too, huh?

  Had The Big Chat with my wife...

  after being a long time fader and lurking here for a few years i finally had the courage to speak to my wife the other day

  she was complaining about how we never get invited back to other jw's houses despite being fairly hospitable ourselves and how she's made some new worldly friends that werre non-judgemental and just nice people.

  she also mentioned her mum (also jw but weak - split up from her jw husband) was struggling with the routine and had lots of nice friends out of the kh.

  Great news

  Try not to push it too hard in your enthusiasm, though. Noone needs information overload, especially when coming to important decisions in their lives. There may still be some triggers in there that could cause her to jump back to "mother".

  Going out with a bang

  after much deliberation, i decided to go "out" at the end of a public talk.

  it didn't go down too well, but at least i was able to give some of my reasons for leaving.. i've put some of the details on my homepage.

  has anyone else ever noticed that there is no watchtower in scripture as part of any particular teaching but there is prominent use of watchtower in dungeons and dragons type games and forms of witchcraft including spells involving watchtower?

  Kaput:There are many Orders and many Societies. The Freemasons are perhaps just the best known and most demonised.

  BR25:
  Many holidays come from people starting to party due to liberation from one regime or another. Not all holidays have pagan origins. For that matter most ritualistic practises stem from times when people were mostly what we would now call "pagan". Is that how you define a pagan practise? If so then why do you still worship predominantly on a Sunday morning and Thursday Evening, where possible?

  You really should do some unblinkered studying of the subject, preferably without a WT volume to hand...

  Why are people so afraid to question the authenticity of the Bible...

  for thousands of years people have taken the bible as the word of god.

  What's this business of "submitting to a religion"? What's wrong with just going and enjoying what you get out of it? Are you sure its not some residue of WTS belief that makes you think that by walking in the door of a church / synagogue / temple you are submitting to something??? Its worth trying sometime - it can be very cathartic!

  let it be this board or any other board, are you comfortable with the fact that whatever you post on the internet will be viewable for a long time.. maybe when you'll be very old, you'll find posts that you made a very long time ago..
