British coinage

ok you brits, i have looked this up before, but can't remember where, and only for the "legal" terms.. you have terms/slang for your coinage/bills that i can never seem to remember or get right.. can you list first the real name for denomination (lowest to highest), then the slang terms you use for that denomination, and then the american $ equivalent?.

what's a quid?

is it the same thing as a shilling?.

1p - penny
2p - tuppence (literally two pence, or two pennies)
5p - bob, shilling (used to be 12p, but that's decimal for you)
£1 - quid
£5 - fiver
£10 - tenner, tanner

We do also have 20p, 50p, £2, £20, £50, £100, but I can't think of any special names for those.

Other terms such as: farthing, ha'penny, thruppenny bit, sixpence, half crown, crown, sovereign, guinea, etc. have pretty much gone.

There used to be a ten bob note which equalled half a quid. Ten bob is still equal to half a quid (50p), but it's now just in coin form.

an interesting situation happened to me yesterday.

i used to work for a company that employed about 30+ jw's of.

i always kept in touch with the non-jw co-workers, and when i left, i began sending.

this weekend i spent the weekend with a few xjws.

we had a nice weekend but eventually we got round to the subject of why i am having a problem accepting that jesus was the messiah.. a friend of one of them came around and he had brought an article which he wanted me to read.

It's all very simple really...

Free Justification by grace.

But that's not where the story ends...
Sanctification by effort, hence a struggle of flesh verses spirit.

Now predestination and freewill - there's a subject to argue about.
Who wants to take the Calvinist side, and who want's to take the Arminian side?

PS. Anyone else fed up of three pages of quotations?
What's wrong with being simply stated?

we had a chap in our local congregation known to everyone as jack.

he was an amiable helpful fellow until he paid a visit to the dentist.. he'd gone to a local dental surgery to have a wisdom tooth extracted and had been offered 3 choices of pain prevention.

out of a choice of novocaine locally, knock-out by injection or sleeping gas, he had opted for the sleeping gas.. as he began to come round after the extraction, jack suddenly bounded to his feet and started to wail in some deep anguish.

I heard that tale, too. I don't know when it happened, but I heard about it in late 80's.
The version I heard was that he'd been reading Matt.18:8,9 and took a rather radical interpretation of it.

Whence Baptism?

have any of you researchedthe origins of the practice of baptism?

as far as i can determine, there's no mention of it, much less as a requirement, in the torah or any of the old testament.. unless i'm missing something, it appears suddenly with john the baptist (oh, excuse me, wt lurkers, john the baptiser).. so then, if all of this is as it appears, then it's fair to conclude that the practice is of extra-biblical (as in ``pagan'' or ``heathen'') origins.

if true, then we have a fascinating example of how john, then jesus, appropriated a pagan custom because of its suitability as a symbol; in this case, of dying to a former life course and awakening to another.

The priests would regularly bathe as part of the ritual for atonement for sins, from Aaron's day.
John's father Zachariah was a priest, even burning incense on the altar. Hence John would have been very familiar with the customs and facts surrounding the various rituals.
