  in the late 1960s, i became a jw.

  there was a sense of intellectual freedom and more openness to discuss various spiritual and even some social topics.

  there was reliance on watch tower literature as an authority, but still the soiciety seem to confine its concerns and left the rest up to individual jws to decide.

  "This stuff about monitoring the public speaker is complete nonsenes. There are no such instruction and there is no such practice. As far as quoting from the outline, etc. there were specific instruction three or four years ago not to do that. I don't know where some of you get this stuff."

  I was talk coordinator from 1994-1998, and frequently spoke at outside congregations. The secretary in our cong monitored the speaker, and had me call or write the PO of the visiting speaker if they deviated from the outline too much. One speaker in particular did not have the audience crack open the Bible until 30 minutes into the talk. I was "counseled" one time at a neighboring congregation when one point "from the outline" was not in line with one of the latest watchtower's "new light". The brother slyly asked me, you really meant to say THIS when you said THAT? I said, ya sure, and left shortly afterwords for a nice luncheon and fellowship with the bookstudy assigned to PR with the visiting speaker.

  Last meeting I attended was memorial 2000, so don't know if this is still practiced.

  Interesting topic. Monitoring of Public talks, NO MORE "special talks at assembly halls", recordings instead of piano, all so different than just a few short years ago.

  Someone told me that the reason a certain congregation was having problems was because they were still using someone to play the piano instead of the Societies recordings. C-O-N-T-R-O-L.

  Off topic - Back in 1964 at a district assembly in Memphis, we had a Bro. Schnell who conducted the orchestra AND chorus. Anyone know if he is related to the author of 30 Years a WT Slave? If not, anyone know if he is still an active JW.

  No axe to grind - just curious.

  Legal question about receipt

  should jw give receipt when donations are given to them on the 'preaching work'?.

  last week, when i gave a donation to the firemen for their calendar, they gave me a receipt.. joe

  I think for claiming a deduction on your taxes for charitable contributions, you should have written evidence if the amount is $250 or more.

  When the "new arrangement" came out, we were encouraged in our congregation to have a separate "purse" or envelope to put the money in, instead of our pocket or wallet. Made it look more official?

  Why I will NEVER become a Jehovahs Witness

  because they are insane.

  mabey not all of them, but the one's i've been exposed to so far have some serious mental problems.

  and for the record i'm not talking about their religious beliefs, i'm basing my opinion on direct actions taken by the ones that i have had personal experience with.. thought some of you might be interested in the things that have been going on with me and jon's family.

  Kevin - my wife Sabine and I hold you and Jon in our thoughts. I am fairly new to these boards, but had the priviledge of chatting with Jon a few times. I got the impression he had a wonderful spirit.

  I am truly sorry that in addition to the pain of loss you feel, you are also being harassed by some insane people. I know its hard (we have been through something tragic too), but take the "high road" and let the bastards hang themselves.

  Suggestion for GB to deal with current situation

  the current world situation and the wt dealings with the un result in some bigger problems the wt leadership has to solve.. firstly, the war.

  an event as big as the attack on the wtc so that people say this has been an historic event comparable to the events of 1914: if this has not been prophecied in the scriptures what should be expected to be?

  the wt's only chance is an application of the "pushing" between the king of the south and the king of the north.

  You Know, and then the end will come

  matthew 24:14. jesus says, this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth, for a witness, and then the end will come.. this work only done by jehovah's witnesses for about 125 years approximately.

  they have 6 million preachers concentrated in mostly 20 countries.. lets say they have preached it in all of north america, which is still debatable since there are still a large segment of people who have no really clear idea of what witnesses believe "the good news" is.. even so, just in china and india there are 2 billion human beings who have probably never been preached to even once.

  add bangladesh, iran, iraq, saudi arabia, etc and you have at least another billion with the population in these hard to reach countries continuously growing.. how can the end come before jesus's prophecy comes true.

  He said that people see the JW's walking in the street and that in itself is a witness to them because they already know who they are.

  I wonder if I was at the same meeting - that sure sounds familiar. If I was a timid JW who only pretended to knock on doors, or ring the bell, I would sleep a lot better at night if I believed that statement. Why bother to walk the territory - just put a placard on the side of your car and drive around the neighborhood?

  I really liked the chapters Ray Franz devoted to the door to door ministry's lack of effectiveness - a real eye opener for me when I read it.

  My attempt to explain to Bible Students who asked the legitimate question "what about all those in China, Sudan etc." was that in the end, we have to leave that to Jehovah's mercy and justice. He can read hearts, etc etc and would know IF given the chance to be exposed to the "truth" they would accept it. Also, like in Russia, the political climate may change overnight so the work could be opened up etc.

  Still does not explain how "the good news would be preached to ALL the inhabited earth before the end comes".
