Slightly different approach - JW my tradition
by closed inhello everybody :) i have been visiting this forum for some time.
i noticed that many can't really free from the past in the org despite many years outside of jw.
i was awaken with a bang.

I don't know how anyone can sit through those meetings knowing that none of it makes sense. I think the reason I lasted as long as I did is because I used to sit with friends and talk through most of the meetings instead of listening. -

Laugh-out-Loud BS from Insight Book
by berrygerry inhow would it be possible in 1,000 years to resurrect and educate the billions now in the grave?.
nevertheless, an illustration reveals what a simple, practical thing jehovah has in mind for mankind.
not to prophesy, but merely for the purpose of illustration, let us assume that those who compose the great crowd of righteous persons who come out of the great tribulation on this system of things alive (re 7:9, 14) number about 6,000,000 (about 1/1000 of earths present population).

They must mean love bombed by 33 brainwashed ones.
Even when they're trying to make an illustration they still portray it as if they have some special knowledge.
an illustration reveals what a simple, practical thing Jehovah has in mind for mankind.
Note that they didn't say what Jehovah "might" have in mind. It's stated as if, even though it is only an illustration and not for the purpose of prophesying, they know what god plans on doing.

Kingdom Farm in S Lansing NY sold for 2.8 million in March, 2015 - news article
by dropoffyourkeylee inthis is probably old news and was commented about in early 2015, but the ithaca news reported on the 3/15 sale of kingdom farm in s lansing ny.
this is the property that was directly across the road from the old gilead site, which had sold a number of years ago.
but about 500 acres still was operated by the jws as kingdom farm.

According to them that is only equal to building 2.8 kingdom halls. Not such a great score when you look at it that way. -

Reasons for doubting.
by New day insomebody mentioned in a recent topic that they had a conversation with a former elder whose breaking point was when the overlapping generation was highlighted in recent times and how he would never serve again until somebody gave him a scriptural reason to believe it.
i am in a similar position.
i have gone in the last 18 months from taking the wt study, leading fs groups, and doing talks on the mtngs to doing almost nothing, as i resigned a little over a year ago as an elder due to a combination of family responsibilities and huge doubts.

I think this new generation teaching is going to be a wake up call for many. I'm seriously half expecting a call from some of my old JW friends any day now. Even if they kind of accept it for now, it has to be eating away at their sensibilities. The only stuff that makes less sense is the stuff they surround the discussions with. The one I listened to went on about how Jesus wasn't using generation in a negative context when he refereed to this. -

Things WT Would Have To Do To Be An Acceptable Religion
by JW_Rogue indrop shunning or at least drop shunning among family members.
make blood transfusions a conscience matter, no more hlc.
drop the two witness rule, mandatory reporting of child abuse, no privileges for offenders.

What they need to do is find a way to push out the people on the fence. Then phase out the religion to keep the totally hard core JWs from jumping off bridges. -

Is it "volunteering" or is it "slavery" or something else?
by Scully inthe wts depends almost exclusively on a volunteer labor force.
its members volunteer their time, goods and services for the benefit and financial gain of the wts.
the "carrot" that drives this volunteerism is god's favour, and ostensibly the further recruitment of new volunteers who will also use their time, goods and services for the benefit and financial gain of the wts.. however, when the "carrot" turns out to be part of a con, and turns out to be completely false (as it often does in areas where human traffickers use the promise of "a better life" or "a better future" to recruit people) it is referred to as slavery.. people willingly sign up for what turns out to be slave labour, and often sign their children up for what turns out to be slave labour, on the false promise of bettering themselves.. now i know that bethelitestm, missionariestm and special pioneerstm receive a very modest monthly stipend that doesn't even cover personal care supplies, much less provide for clothing, transportation, etc., and that these folks rely heavily on the generosity of brotherstm and sisterstm.

Regarding children, I don't know how they get away with having children dedicate themselves to the organization. A simple baptism might be OK but there is no way a young person understands what is involved in the JW version of Baptism. They are probably getting away with it because most people (even JWs) don't understand how much more there is to a JW baptism. -

Watchtower Magazine
by poppers indoes anyone have a scan of a watchtower magazine article that shows the questions posed and answers on the bottom of the page?
-
mynameislame
Do you mean when they used to have the questions for the paragraphs at the bottom of the page? I don't think those ever included the answers, it would be a bit redundant. If you can't figure out the answer by reading the paragraph you might not be breathing. -

I found it interesting that they are talking about training your conscience but none of the scriptures they used seem to back this up. What would be the point of a conscience if it needed to be trained? -

Fake Reporting, Growth and Crap Blessings
by cookiemaster ini think the numbers shown in the yearbook and with other occasions that are used by the gibberish buddies to boast about the blessings from jehovah are super fake and inflated, much of it even without their knowledge.
i think they like to take advantage of all sorts of technicalities and loopholes to report numbers as great as possible, but it's not like jws are super reliable sources of reporting.for example i have not been in field circus for something like two years.
i never talked about "the truth" with any non-jw, yet i've never been considered inactive.

An interesting change to the oranized book was pointed out on reddit recently. Probably originally cross posted from here but it is germane to this conversation so i'll cross post back.
The new version adds the following:
The Governing Body does not impose its conscience on the worldwide congregation as to how time spent in field service is to be counted, nor has anyone else been appointed to make a judgment in this matter.
It also deletes the following which was in the 2005 book:
There are essential activities for which time is not counted, such as ... traveling to and from the territory.
