  Spare the rod and spoil the child?

  i saw a report on tv just now of how two baptist mininisters beat the living daylights out of some kid for not attending the correct bible class.

  the kid suffered kidney damage and the ministers have been arrested.

  this reminded me of how my jw brother used to take his boys out the back and beat them black and blue every time his patience ran out with them for not sitting still for 2+ hours.

  Dustrabbit, Maybe the Honkies spank their kids in private too? I thought they exerted pressure via other more subtle means. The Honkies are not that far removed from mainland China actually. Just a few years since the majority crossed the boarder to HK. Many of the ideologies and customs remain strong. The opulence in HK has had its affect though - western ways are erroding Chinese values. God I hate the influence of junk food in HK. So many fat people there now compared to when I first arrived in HK in 1985. I hate to see the petite women sporting western lard arses!! What ever made them think we were sohphisticated?

  Are you leaving China for good? Do you speak Cantonese?

  More Than You "MAY" Know

  i thought that maybe some may want to see another side of the argument of god verses secularism / evolution verses creationism.

  im not interested in the fact that many have lost their religious fervor and become atheists or invented their own belief system, or still accept the bible but with a different twist.

  my intention is to make as strong of an argument as i can for the existence of a particular god, who i believe we all once knew and may be privileged to know again.

  Dustrabbit, I kinda do still live in HK but I'm in Australia at the moment - I go back and forth. My husband, an exjw too is still there, and if he's free I'm sure he'd like to catch up with you. There is plenty to do and see in HK - it all depends on what you like doing. The 18th is a Thursday? So David will be at work. If I had a day to kill in HK in the middle of summer, I'd go to Central Star Ferry and hop on a 260 or 6 or 6A bus and go to Stanley Market. It's a lovely ride over to the market with great views and the market is fun (full of Americans though). There are plenty of nice places to eat on the waterfront and shopping is reasonable (not compared to china though).

  Tell me what you like and I'll recommend where to go? Temples???? hehehe. I could give you directions to the Branch Office - you can be impressed as I am by their getting such a prized piece of realestate years before property prices skyrocketed in HK. How WTS eh?

  Actually dustrabbit, I've lived in Hong Kong for twelve years and I've rarely seen (can't think of an instance) Chinese people hitting their children. Chinese parents have a high level of control, when it suits them, but the control is mostly reseverved for study and learning. I don't really know how they control their kids but they do and it's not thru brute force. Sorry that your wife has some weird genes. The child sounds screwed up.

  I put some of the excessive hitting down to appearences. Witnesses like to be seen to be in control - being good parents by dub standards, with lovely quiet managable children. It's all part of the image they strive to live up to. Maybe too there is a little bit of their own frustration coming thru. Meetings are dead boring and add an annoying toddler to the equation and the temper over boils. Who wouldn't rather be home relaxing in front of the tv with the toddler playing happily on the floor with it's toys?

(yes I think he beat them hard enough to bruise them).

  I know that JWs are particularly in favor of "spare the rod and spoil the child" - but is a 3 yo who can't sit still for 2 hours spoilt? What is it about very religious people and beating their kids?

  Reading Someones Thoughts

  this forum is a very cool means of communication.we don`t talk,we think of what we want to communicate and transfer it onto the screen in front of us.then we send it around the world to other living beings to let them see what we are thinking,they in turn do the samethink of it,we are communicating around the world on the internet with just our thoughts.it`s not just communication of thoughts,it go`s one step beyond.it`s conversation with another person,with just our thoughtsthis is a tool like no other i have encountered.i have not been on the internet that long and i am still amazed...outlaw

  It's a bit like a safety value. Instead of blowing up at your nearest and dearest dub relative, you say what you are really thinking here. Sometimes I think we should just say it to them - and keep saying it until they get it into their thick skulls!

  is it just me or..... 1. do the vast majority of the "good" females in the jw publications look like they stepped out of the martha stewart-wannabe/betty crocker/beaver's mom mold?

  and the bad "girls" look like some cheesy bad girl from a chessy 80s movie?.

  2. did i see a lack of interracial couples/families in the jw pubs?

  The "good" females have the same look as the women in old Chinese posters round the time of the cultural revolution. Same kind of propaganda I guess.

  What about awarding the guy some brownie points for good behavior whilst in a disfed state? After all there doesn't seem to be a fair system in play for disfed people (duh!) If you are well behaved and play it by the rules you get shunned. If you jump up and down and give em' heaps, you get shunned. Actually I've learned that they hate you just that bit more if you give trouble - - you sure aren't rewarded for going easy on them or keeping up a few WT doctrines.
