  As for aluminum, that is not surprising. Aluminum is one of the most common elements in the Earth's crust. Hence it is present in the soil, in airborne dust, and rainwater.

  Virtually all food, water, air, and soil contain some aluminum.

  A lot of blue states are mostly red, geographically. The Blues tend to mass in the cities.

  There is a coherent reason. For the major networks to use the same colors made recognition easier for viewers.

  But it is completely arbitrary. If anything, it seems backwards.
