This week's "The Practice"

did anyone here see the practice last night (sunday november 10)?

one of the story lines was about a man molested by a catholic priest.

some of the dialogue was incredible and seemed to be right out of silentlamb's mouth.

I didn't see episode about the catholic, but I caught the end of the one about the JW's and blood issue. I guess that was a rerun at the 12:30 am slot. Very interesting.

That phrase "crisis of conscience" isn't unique to nor originated by Raymond Franz. When I went to the library this past week to look for the book, the catalog database came up with several other book titles containing that phrase. A lot of words or phrases come to have specific meaning to JW and ex-JW that in reality have a much broader definition. Like "going out in the field." Sometimes technicians or salespeople use that phrase. Of course, people have called JW's book salespeople.

Alas, I've been to the library twice and asked a librarian once and we weren't able to find Crisis of Conscience by Ray Franz on the shelf, even though the database indicated it should be there. I'll probably just get it on half.com.

i havn't been to a meeting in years, but i can still remember when we had to vote on something, it was always 100% for or 100% against.

didn't it bother you to see how everyone looked around to see if someone dared to vote against the general trend?

why were they so radical?

I guess my father was one of those maverick elders at times. I remember him voting against some resolution to spend some money. I don't remember what it was for, but I know they didn't know how much it would cost, so they were resolving to spend an undetermined amount of money. He's still very much a JW, but no longer an elder.

First Holidays as a Non-JW

this will be the first year i go through the holidays as a non-jw.

and on top of that with beliefs that can best be described as agnostic.

basically i think i probably won't do much different.

Thanks for all the replies. Okay, I'll have to admit I've become a bit cynical in the recent months. It's nice to know people can enjoy holidays without the bad parts. There's definitely a difference between expecting gifts from people simply because its a certain day of the year and giving gifts to other people with no expectation of anything in return. And I think people giving gifts to children really can say they are honestly giving unconditionally and without expectation except for that smile perhaps. That can also be said of the people who choose to participate in food drives on the holidays. I can remember previously watching the news about the seasonal charity drives and dinners for the less fortunate and thinking in my self-righteous JW mind, "But what do they do the rest of the year?" Now that my mind is a little clearer, I can see that at least they were doing something while I was doing nothing. So I think those are a couple of good ideas.

I never have had any feeling for these holidays. So there's no reason to run into them now. It's not like I was missing something with the holidays. Only a few hundred years ago, few people celebrated Christmas. And there's still a few cultures around now that haven't been infiltrated by modern commercialism. So they have not been indoctrinated with greedy gift seeking tendencies with thinly veiled references to Biblical characters.
However, when I went to my saxophone class last night, I did agree to work on a couple of Christmas songs. I've always liked the melodies to some of them. And while I don't hold to the claimed Christian ideas of the songs, I have no objection to playing them now. It was kind of a realization as I was looking my teacher's Christmas stack and picking out a few. I started wondering what other stuff I will get into this holiday season. There's the job's Christmas party. But I probably won't go to that. Less than half my section the office goes. (We have probably close to around a 1000 people in my section of the organization) so there's no impelling reason to go and I really wouldn't have anybody to hang out with there.
So if anyone cares to comment, what did you do your first holiday season after leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses and what do you do now, or what do you plan to do? I would like to hear from people who still have a belief in God and Christian ideals and people who are atheist or agnostic now.

Ohhh - what a laugh!

it's been quite a while since the last time i was in here.. i don't know if any of you rememeber my story, but i'm a happy ung male atheist married to a lovely jw.... last week i attended the study group with my wife - the i-don't-know-what-he's-called-but-he's-visiting-the-study-groups-from-time-to-time was going to be there and there would therefore be coffee, cake and cookies after the meeting.

as i get along quite well with my wife's jw "friends" (some of them being my family in law) i attended the meeting just to take part in the social activities afterwards.. during the i-don't-know-what...'s speak at the end of the meeting he explained how telephone preaching could be used and blahblahblah... in the end he then said "so are any of you interested in trying that?

" - no reaction from anyone - not a nod, not a smile - nothing.

Oh we had the snack time, but our Service Overseer was such a serious guy. He would request that on his visits no refreshments be served. But out bookstudy would have a goodie night every month otherwise.

On telephone witnessing, yeah that was what I hated the most. I have always had no hesitation with hanging up on telemarketers. It was really tough for me to try the telewitnessing. I think some people have better phone voices. But my voice isn't all that sweet. Others people's voices just don't sound too serious and people would think it some type of phone prank. Anyway, glad I'm not worried about doing that anymore.

Yeah I question the fact that he was killed by her pulling on his balls also. Maybe she could cause him to lose consciousness from pulling on his balls. I'd more believe that she stunned him and maybe caused him to lose consciousness and death was by the blow of the rock to the head. Anyhow, if its true, he got what he deserved. An excruciatingly painful assault to the groin before being put out of his miserable life is quite fair for a rapist.

for me: 1. the day i cant take care of my bodily functions and am paralyzed from the neck down or 2. when i am 100years old.

Actually I wish I didn't have to die. I do have a preference that when I go, it is quick. I'd rather not have a slow suffering death. So with that said, I'm like another poster. I don't want to be around long if I get to the point where I can't control bodily functions or am paralyzed over most of my body or am living in constant excrutiating pain with no independence. And I mean this if that is the situation when I'm old. If I'm in a car accident next week and I get paralyzed on most of my body, I think I'd like to stick around a while longer. However, if I get to 110 and I can still stay at my own place with no help and go get my own groceries or perhaps just have them delivered, I think I could still enjoy myself a while.

The Sniper Being Tried Here!

some of you may already know through my posts, that i work in the prince william county circuit court.

the clerk was taking lunch, but called me to make me aware, that john mohammad is being transferred to our facility, and is probably here as i write this.. it is no secret that our prosecutors are tough, and have tried many a big case and gotten the dealth penalty.

they want this guy to get the death penalty for sure, so they jointly selected our court, since one of the murders was committed here.

I'm in DC. I'm not envying the crowds you're gonna have down there. But I am glad to see them trying those guys somewhere that has a strong death penalty. I think some people were concerned about the feelings of people in Maryland where more people died. But I'm quite glad they're going to the place that has the most chance of convicting with the severest sentence. People elsewhere can have they're "closure" later or maybe by some miracle realize that a court trial conviction doesn't give you "closure."

I'm in No. VA also, Arlington area. Grew up near Memphis, TN. Came here and continued to attend the KH for about 2.5 years before I left in April of this year.
