Forget about your exams - go for a weeks ministry June public WT
by dozy inbearing in mind that every experience in the watchtower has some kind of agenda behind it , what about this experience of a london girl going to ireland to preach & have a holiday.
i was just waiting for the inevitable "i came home & passed all my exams with flying colours.
" but it didn't say.. and what kind of responsible parent would take a child on holiday so that she could " take her mind off her exams.

There aren't any JWs in Ireland? Or they're really slack about going out in field service?
There are some, but very few. I suspect the Irish have spent so long being controlled by the clergy that they're very reluctant to put themselves under the control of one more organisation that sees itself as God's mouthpiece.
Speaking personally, I know how they feel.

mP, Yes, sorry, I wrote Osiris for Horus at one point, you are absolutely right.
That'll teach me to write very much too late at night for anything to make decent sense!

Animosity Toward Inactive Ones
by EmptyInside ini don't understand why many witnesses are cold toward inactive ones.
aren't they supposed to want to help them and encourage them?.
i know of a young woman,i've known forever, who married a non-witness,and hasn't been to the meetings for awhile.

Much of the above is very scary stuff. Even I am getting the "missing you so much" phone calls, including tears from one loving sister!
I read through the w 08 article above with growing horror and distaste. From where I am, 6 weeks and haven't been within sight of the KH, haven't read a WT, haven't read a day text, not one, haven't picked up the phone to listen in, I'm getting stronger every day.
But they damaged me, there is no doubt. I've just had a day out with one of my daughters...it's been a lovely sunny Sunday, all day. We've been discussing family things for Easter, and I was talking about Easter eggs for grandchildren, realising that even now I am wary of going to the usual supermarket to buy them because "they'll" see me.
Pathetic! Why should I care?
My daughter, with an evil grin, said "Come to the Dark Side! We have Easter eggs!"

What Is Your Opinion?
by allyouneedislove inhow would you respond to the following statement:.
no one was negatively affected or died by heeding past understandings on blood fractions, organ transplant, hemodilution, etc.
most of the past understandings on medical procedures existed when the treatments were not being used on a large scale.. .

What is the theme that you see, Chariklo?
Well, tec, in this particular instance, when I opened the thread, it was the theme of a man who died or was sacrificed for a greater good, sometimes with the theme of saving mankind in some way. Odin hanged himself on Yggdrasil, the World Tree, for nine days, travelled to the underworld and learned magic; I think he was given the runes then. cf The Hanged Man in the Tarot.
Osiris' death and resurrection was believed to have given eternal life at least to the Pharaohs and maybe to mankind...I'm not sure, I'll have to check. He was also associated with the seasonal dying and growing again of plants.
There's a general theme of a young man, or son (as with Jesus and Osiris) going down to the underworld of r death (Jesus) and rising again, bringing salvation or esoteric knowledge. In the case of Krishna there is the doctrine of reincarnation. There are many similar mythologies, for instance from aboriginals in Australia and I have a feeling that some native American mythologies have comparable themes, at least in part.
It just fascnates me, and has done for a long time. I repressed all such thoughts when I was with the Witnesses, for they are so rigid and unbending in their thinking that all individual thought, reasoning and imagination is stopped in its tracks. Now that I am free again...FREE!!!!...I'm becoming more and more myself every day!
Expanding from the theme of resurrection, (which incidentally also extends to female goddesses or at least personages, eg Persephone in Greek mythology) there are other common themes across the world. Oh, of course, here we are at memorial time which to the rest of the world is Easter, and we have the link between death and rebirth and Eoster, vilified in the Bible Teach book because it is supposedly paganism, but really, what is paganism but another belief system? and once you shake off the WY shackles you can see elements of truth across it all.
And it is that universal quest for truth which fascinates me the most. Not The Truth as in WT, a misnomer if ever there was one, but truth iself.
This is one great topic, Chariklo. Good education. Haven't been exposed to mythology since freshman/highschool -- a summerschool crash course but wish I'd paid attn.
Hey, thanks, LV101!
I was lucky. We had an Arthur Mee's Children's Encycopedia in our house as I was growing up, all ten volumes, and it is choc-a-block full of world myths. We also had no television till I was getting on for 7, and even then there were hardly any children's programmes. So, many a rainy afternoon, I'd be there with my nose in one volume or another!

They're doing the big round-up before the Memorial, aren't they?
I suppose it's something you have to choose between. Do you go along quietly to the Memrial and the special talk meeting and look head-bowed and murmur kind of humble things to the 2 elders, or do you risk losing contact with your grandchildren.
That's the wicked thing about this religion. Or just one of the wicked things, and one of the worst.

Hmm, yes, but all this speculation, tec and mP and LV101 is focusing on detail, as I wrote above. It gets to sound like the WT not being able to see the wood for the trees, even the twigs!
I don't think any of these religions or mythologies, whichever you see them as, actually, consciously copy one from another. I don't find that probable. What I find much more interesting is the way mythology has grown and evolved along similar themes, though with very different stories when one focuses on detail, even in remote corners of the world.
Because there is no way the WT chronology of the whole of mankind coming from Adam and Eve in 6,000 odd years is going to stand up to common sense for one moment. We are talking over many, many scores of thousands of years for mythologies and beliefs to develop.
