souljah: he says he likes bmx but, he still wants to be a scientest/paelontoligist when he grows up [i don't even think i was allowed to say that when i was his age] .
dad: why not :-d .
souljah: well that would have meant a college education, and i wasn't even allowed to say that i was interested in getting a college education .
SoulJah: Many have got frustrated in this type of conversation with a JW. The reason, I believe is this:
Very few solid statements have been made by the organisation about what is considered right or wrong in living our day-to-day lives. Often we are told 'it is a matter of conscience'. However, articles and talks are given from time to time on subjects in this category which make it obvious what is regarded as the 'proper' thing to do. This is safe for those in authority, because while you are expected to do things one way, and do accordingly, when something goes wrong as a result, they can say, 'Well we never said it was mandatory, in fact we left it entirely up to your own conscience!' Its a tactic that is very difficult to deal with, because you have 'nothing in writing'.
I believe that human instinct is very important. It cuts through all the cunning use of words to deny something that you know is there, but cannot 'prove'. The fact that a large number of people sense the same thing is enough reason to give careful consideration to the matter. After Gavin Becker's two books on human instinct, I'm convinced that the brain is capable of picking up on the truth even when 'logic' gets in the way. Unfortunately, 'loyalty' to the organisation is a powerful force that can cloud a person's mind to resist the alerts made by this valuable inner tool.

Hillary, I'm sure that as time passes my views will change in some way or another. I don't mind having discussions with reasonable people who haven't forgotten how to be polite even in the face of disagreement. Opening oneself up to the views and reasonings of different folk can be quite educational to point where long cherished beliefs are changed. If someone genuinely wants to change my thinking because they think it would benefit me in some way then I will listen and discuss, but if their intention is simply to 'score points' or belittle others, then I won't engage in conversation with them.
You might be interested to know that not too long ago I was actually on debate boards trying to defend the organisation, and the same types as YouKnow appeared who opposed the organisation. A case of damned if you do, damned if you don't! It has really taught me that to not judge a book by its cover. That's why I think it is very important to take notice of your instincts where people are concerned as it can save wasting a lot of your time.
Unfortunately, some people who like nothing better than to stir things up have become quite skilled at keeping their victims talking by saying things that provoke the natural sense of wanting to defend ourselves. These people thrive on confrontation, and the only way to deal with them is to ignore them. Letting them have the last word (they will anyway!) and resisting the urge to defend oneself against that final provocation is, I think, the best way to effect a long-term solution. Just imagine if everyone just ignored these people, starving them of the attention they obviously crave, they might, just might, use the silence and emptiness to ponder on the fact that people usually respond better when you show them respect. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the subject is closed and I won't be posting in this thread anymore - I'm getting so much in a positive way from other threads and postings made by the majority, that it would be pointless dwelling on the very small minority who try to spoil it for others. Thanks again to all the folk who gave me a big welcome (((((Y'All)))))).
there are these things we call parts of speech.
the first sentence in any paragraph defines a subject.
since a thing can be anything except things that are not really things, a noun can be anything.
Has anyone noticed how the society's publications are full of indefinite articles?

I see Genesis 1 as a resume of the creative 'days', and Genesis 2 as giving a more detailed account starting somewhere in the sixth 'day', so I see no contradiction. Genesis 1 says that God made male and female in 'day' six (general). Genesis 2 says (quite reasonably to me, in the same sixth 'day') that Adam was created first then after some time Eve was made (specific). If I pick up a book that I'm interested in reading I would look for a short overall description to see if it whets my appetite. Suppose the introduction to that book states that in 2001 Mr Jones the baker made a couple of award-winning cakes. I make the assumption (for whatever reason) that those cakes were made at the same time for one specific competition, but it turns out on reading the rest of the book that each of those cakes was made six months apart for different competitions. Does that make the introduction and the body of the book contradictory? No, both cakes were made in the same year as stated in the introduction, but the more detailed account in the body of the book shows they were made at different times of the year.
remember the song, '50 ways to leave your lover' by paul simon?.
well, i tweaked the lyrics a tad bit.
(i even incoporated our very own simon's name into it...simon and paul simon...oh, the irony!).
Thanks for the help and info!
