I think it originated in Russell, his father and the banker (first WT president)...realising how much money there was in religious literature. Back then there were several periodicals and the WT guys wrote for several of them.
Then came the genius publishing idea.... what is the most popular book ever....the bible. How can we make money? write our own copywrited version.
Now if only we had a free workforce to make, distribute and eventually pay for this literature production...
It is a GREAT business model, downside is lots and lots of fibs....

Is it true that elders lurk the forums?
by make yourself init seems like it is one huge contradiction.
but are they doing it for the purpose to try to guess exactly who in the congregation is on ex jw sites?

No frankie and before I saw your reply I edited it because that is not the message I was conveying. I meant to say science pays no or little attention to such claims as these, those of us who live, breathe,mconsume science all day for fun, are here on the forum and listening......
It isn't like you are being shut down and stopped from speaking or that people with scientific approaches refuse to discuss these possibilities. But there are restrictions on the universe that we know about, so if ideas break those rules, there has to be extraordinary amount of evidence to present them as a possibility.
I realise that you are a free thinking person that sees no restrictions, which is cool, I am almost envious. Come on, You have just spoken to me about DMT and ayhausca, clearly I am not a closed minded, cob webbed, old school fart! But be fair.... we are just asking the obvious questions anyone would ask...and I personally recognise these scientific laws and restrictions do exist.
....but I do like group hugs :D x...... oh cofty did it again....

In honesty Kate having just read this thread, you said you were intimidated by Viviane when you were just a lurker on the site, yet you were a registered member long before she ever started posting, she is actually new here. Also her posts are very accurate and to the point, when I used to come here as a JW, that is what I was looking for personally, not anecdotal opinion or beliefs. Sometimes science and fact is seen as harsh, cold, miltaristic statements. But that is the bias of the reader, when the poster simply says 'you are wrong about that this is what is actually true' it is the reader who adds emotion, conflict, attack.... what was said word for word was simply correct. The watchtower wanted us to hug someone as we fed them the knowledge book, or live forever book. Love bombing does work. But we don't do that in real life, we shouldn't do it here. The information should stand by merit not how it was said. We don't hug people as we tell them they are incorrect on astro physics... we just say in honesty...hey, that isn't quite right! Do you know what I mean? There is no need to add fake love, a fake friendship.... we are discussing facts about astrophysics lol. Also it got very confrontational the moment someone asked questions... the confrontational tone was set by others as I read it.
Come on Village Girl....Viviane was correct from the start, the whole of modern physics including e=mc2 is founded in space and time being intertwined or as Einstein called it, the fabric of time and space.
I find Viviane's posts were succinct and to the point, others became personal, others introduced motives and unpleasant comments.
There seems to be a clash on this forum at the moment between the scientific and the non. The scientific, it is true, needs to respect that not everyone is educated on scientific method, but at the very least the non scientific need to accept that when they make extraordinary claims or claim to quote science...they will have people ask them questions about it. It is a forum!
Village girl was in fact incorrect and was simply quoting from physics forums, this kind of thing irks people with sincere interest beacause it poor practice as she knowsl and that is why sources are provided by scientists. Not only that her quote was proving her to be incorrect.
Can you imagine how frustrating it is to see that, someone poorly referencing a scientific quote that also makes evident what they are saying is wrong? Do we just say nothing? Do we just ignore it? It is a common occurence here, it is going on right now in the shark evolution thread too, with a poster quoting bing search results as evidence, not even reading the results which without realising it are answering his own complaint and doubts.
There will always be misunderstanding between scientific minds and those who explore the unknown without scientific restrictions, we should embrace each other, I agree. BUT the explorers must accept that we have a mountain of facts long discovered already.... so when exploring , if you contradict one of these OF COURSE we will mention it.
By the way, Frankie and Village Girl, most scientifically minded people wouldn't even glance at this kind of thing and would leave you to believe what you want. We are here, you have our attention, we are listening..... but don't get annoyed when we ask you questions! We are all onthe same side!

Shark Evolution

i used to consider sharks to be evidence for creation - and against evolution because it was stated that they are largely unchanged after millions of years ( hence, 'what evolution?')..
that's not the case, however.

No ....not less evolved....as if their is a seeking to attain a golden level of sharkness....an ultimate evolved shark!
But less evolved as in, they thought that sharks had not been as altered by their enviroment as much as they were.
Satanus, hit pause....what are you claiming more evolved and less evolved refers to?
This is it simply... to evolve is to adapt to your enviroment....
They used to think that sharks had not evolved much because their enviroment didnt alter hugely.
NOW we see that over time they have actually made significant changes not yet detected, like to their teeth as YOUR link said.
The quotes from YOUR link that I posted explain it exactly! They had evolved more over time than first thought!
I don't understand what you are even trying to say! Scientists have been consistant on this since Darwin, you just dont understand it so it is confusing you. That is fine....but don't denounce a whole scientific field, just politely ask for someone to explain it to you!

Even here, the time people waste discussing what a verse may mean having been past on by word of mouth for centuries, copied and translated many times over.... as if there is any accuracy to it's meaning anyway, all the while they could have graduated a law degree or researched a cure for a disease...
These are all things really going on in the world, we need people with time and energy, and so much is wasted.
Part of me wonders if it is a lazy version of doing valuble work and research, pouring through Revelation as if the words still have any legitimacy in a modern english translation, instead of slogging through real research, real exams, real hard work! Anyone can read a bible verse and have a unique intepretation, so much so it won't be unique!

I was in my sisters house revising for an exam one weekend, studying cardiology. On the table was a Watchtower for the sunday meeting that day. I picked it up and had a read.... it was debating why angels hadn't written any bible texts and suggested it was because of their inability to feel any human emotions. I immediately thought ..."what about their urges to have sex with women before the flood? What about their anger at jesus when he spoke to them, what about their jealousy for god's worship?" These were all things I was taught as a JW, they can't even keep up with their own b.s!
It dawned on me and I laughed to myself.....I spent 25 years debating nonsense, answering up, learning and consuming garbage! What an utter waste of time! The obvious polar opposite being the revision I was doing and the knowledge I held within the textbook in my hands.
So when I hear of JW's debating utter garbage, it makes me think of what the real world is researching and debating, it makes Watchtower appear centuries behind, because it is. JW's waited 20 years to be told new light on a definition for 'this generation'.....it becoming obvious when, once more, nothing happened based on their old predictions.
Meanwhile, the world was discovering boson's......

Why are you so lazy about checking facts? Do you not want to know the answers? I don't comprehend someone who goesno further than typing into a search engine and assuming that is enough....
These are specialist topics, they require scientific literacy and significant understanding.... results from a search engine, produced by everyone and anyone is meaningless.
