Do David Splanes offensive and pompous orations have a silver lining?
by ranmac inim starting to think so.. i was still somewhat active in meeting and assembly attendance when i first started doubting the jw life.
when i first heard splane give a discourse, it was a real wake up call as to what kind of people are controling this organization.
the next time i heard him speak he was even worse.. as ive seen on this forum, many people have had the same experience.. in slimboyfats thread, http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/251890/1/british-zone-visit-from-david-splane-a-report-from-the-special-meeting-in-glasgow, he noted this gem from splane: if traumatic things have happened in your past then just don't think about it, that's the best you can do until the new system.. this is one of the most irresponsible and rage inducing comments i have ever heard.

Julia - U R exactly right. These guys are WORSHIPPED. After David Splane gave his talk, I was speaking with a "sister" from our KH. She raved about how blessed we were to have a GOVERNING BODY member RIGHT HERE with us! She asked me my thoughts. I was honest. I told her he was a bit dry (he was....no pulpit pounding or ranting). She was horribly offended. She said "do you understand who you're talking about?" I said "would you rather I just agree with you?"
Yes....I was waking up at this time, hence my honesty.

You could imagine how disappointed I was to hear that David Splane would be at our assembly.....and not David Blaine.

Is it possible your soon to be ex FIL has smooth talked his customer, conditioned her with , "Oh, no need to bother your kids, I'll do it for you"?
This is exactly what I am afraid of. I wanted to believe his story that her children were rotten and he was the sole beacon of shining light in her life.....but I get this feeling in the pit of my stomach like this isn't the case at all. Like he has convinced her to come to him with her needs so that he can later show her that her children are distant from her and don't care about her like he does.
Is it possible when her children call her, she tells them don't worry, I'm fine, ex FIL, takes good care of me...so you don't need to worry. Have a great day kids. Kiss the grandchildren for me. (So maybe The Kids don't feel all that welcomed and that mom has more "feelings" for ex FIL than them, so back off.)
Yes....this is another thing that bothers me. I cannot guarantee this is what is happening but it would not surprise me.
My soon to be ex wife is VERY MUCH like her father. Master manipulator. Very few true friends. Try to surround themselves with "yes" men that will agree and will go on the offensive should any of their "friends" ever stop being "yes men".
My wife loved me at one point......but that was when I was a full fledged witness. My FIL is a company man to the bone. He has raised her to disown parents, siblings, spouses and children in a hearbeat should she ever have to decide between them and "Jehovah". I told her of my doubts years ago. She begged, implored me to "investigate". So I went on an almost 3 year research project. She was sure I would come to my senses. When I told her what I had discovered......everything changed overnight. Both my soon to be ex wife and FIL believe whole heartedly in "theocratic warfare". That is why I could easily see him justifying his actions by saying "I'll give a lot of it to the organization, and what I don't give to the organization will help me personally. And as long as I'm around, I can help others".
He is quite the anomoly. He went into debt helping to rebuild a local brother's house when the brother had no $ to pay for it. Yet he also famously borrowed $30k from a friend of mine and signed an agreement that if the friend ever needed it back, he could arrange to have it to him within 10 days. He would do this by keeping his credit line on his credit card open. Well......he spent up his credit line to the max in a hurry. My friend needed his $ back a couple years later and good ol FIL couldn't pay him back. He ended up filing bankruptcy for the second time. And all the while during his bankruptcy he still managed to come up with the $ to go on vacation and have a new concrete driveway poured.....but he couldn't pay back his debt. Finally not long ago.....he did end up paying off the loan (minus interest). This is just one of many questionable financial deals he has been a part of.

RVW - This I cannot say for sure. The story HE tells is that they haven't been there for her. And he (living 5 minutes away) jumped at every opportunity. This in and of itself can create the illusion that because someone lives farther away or doesn't act as quickly (as in a love bombing situation)........then they haven't been there for you. Tis the point of love bombing. Make the person think that this illusion you are showing them is what TRUE love is........and that person will quickly condemn their former friends and family for not being good enough

So my good ol soon to be ex father in law told me a few years ago (before I had told him of my horrible apostate ideas) about a "client" of his. My FIL used to be involved in the insurance/finance industries. He had a lady client that was about 20 years older than him. He took care of her estate planning (not a huge estate......but definitely has some $ in it), insurance, finances etc etc) Now this woman is in her 80's. He has always been there to take care of her. He has done some construction/repair projects at her house (at a discounted "rate"). He has helped clean up her house (she is a packrat). He has taken her to hospital/doctor appts. Etc. Etc. He always came across as though he was 1) doing it to show "Christian love" and 2) because her children supposedly didn't care about her and wouldn't help her. Well.....a few years ago he made the mistake of telling me that he succeeded in convincing her to make her entire will out to HIM! He even laughed when he said "boy are her children going to be upset!"
At the time, I wanted to believe that she did this on her own accord and that he really took care of her out of a Christian duty to do so. But I am awake now. I now believe that he has love bombed her for years......going above and beyond what a typical family member would do so as to theoretically say "look who TRULY loves you! I AM your real family". I believe he has been holding her hand as she gets older and older for the MAIN (not sole) purpose of conning her. And now that he has succeeded, and now that she is getting up in age.....he is just going to bide his time and wait for her to die and then reap the rewards of his hard work.
I know I haven't given a lot of details, but what do you think? If you were me would you find a way to contact this woman's children to let them know of what has happened? If so.......how does a person go about doing that?

Interesting conversation
by Freeof1914 inas some of you know several weeks ago i was disfellowshipped for several reasons, but primarily my thoughts on the organization.
last night i had a very interesting conversations with my wife after she came back from the meeting and several things jumped out at me that made see even more clearly how sick this religion is.
first of all, several months ago we attended a wedding of a friend.

By their fruits you will recognize them. Wow. I can just feel the love oozing from your wife.
My wife reacted the same way before she left. It is amazing the amount of control this organization has. Here is a woman that at least at one point loved you.......but you made the unforgiveable error of challenging the organization. She is prepared to speak hatefully to you and turn a cold shoulder so as to show her support for an organization.
I don't want to be the grim reaper......but please be prepared. This outburst of hers may be step one in a covert operation to leave you due to "spiritual endangerment".

There are *good* people out there! Yes -gasp!- in the "world"!!
by Muddy Waters init is still a wonderful discovery and pleasant surprise to continually keep finding that there are some awesomely *good* people out there in the "world"!.
it's such a neat thing, this (slow, yet very rewarding!
) process of making new, non-jw friends.... i recently had my first meal at the home of one of these new wonderful people we've just met and i just must share this!

Yes.....all these worldlies may SEEM nice.....but they don't serve Jehovah! People that are nice, and helpful, and moral and giving but don't serve jehovah are just trying to ruin your faith! You need to eat with witnesses! They may be rude, opinionated and lead double lives but at least they are front row at the meeting. THAT is was God cares about!

"What if it IS true?" - This tells me you haven't fully severed their mind control yet. Please don't be insulted. It took me years to do it. But once you do.......the stark realization is that it cannot possibly be true. To me, the notion of saying "what if they ARE right?" is on par with saying "what if water ISN'T made of hydrogen and water?" The possibility just does not exist.
It would take a miracle performed by a God I don't really even believe in. Even if they did away with shunning, and stopped lying, and stopped quoting people out of context, and stopped attacking those that disgree, stopped allowing people to die, stopped protecting pedophiles etc etc.......even IF all of this was done away with.......it doesn't change the fact that Jerusalem fell in 587BC....not 607. Therefore they cannot be the one and only true religion as they claim. To me.....this is no different than asking if you would JOIN Scientology if they got rid of all their bat shit crazy teachings. I doubt if you would because their foundation is still rotten. The same is true of the Watchtower.
Sadly your buddy is a classic victim of high control fear mongering.

What would you tell someone who wants to become a JW?
by slimboyfat inwhat would be the most important things you think someone should be aware about jws if they are planning on getting baptised as a jw?
imagine you are on a plane and get talking to the person next to you.
you find out they are considering becoming a jw but they are not sure.

"Are people usually told about shunning before baptism, or is this one of the little gold nuggets you find out about later?"
One of my best friends was baptized at the age of 20 and DA'd at 34. He had NO IDEA of the shunning rule until well after his baptism. He was made aware of it by an elder after he conversed ever so briefly with a disfellowshipped person prior to the start of a thursday night meeting. Yes siree......they hide that nugget until you are already on the hook
