It seems some of you remember the original point of the thread. While WT in 1991 was writing an article condemning Christendom using a lyric from a song about Jesus wearing a Rolex out of one side of their mouth, out the other side they were taking up a secret donation to buy a Rolex watch for a high management person. This caused a great deal of anger among those who had to go along with the program in order to get along with the powers that be.

The copious defense of Max Larson by someone who knew little about him is funny to say the least. Let me offer a few "Max" questions for those who may have actually knew him. I will start with an easy one.

1. What was the most outstanding feature of Larson's face?

2. Where did he receive his factory picture?

3. Where was he given his Rolex?

Let's make it a little harder,

4. What is the name of his fourteen year old pen pal girlfriend?

5. What was the deal Max made with the Brooklyn Mafia?

I will stop there for now, let's see who really knows Max Larson.

Women win cash for religious deception

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A jury awarded $290,000 to two women who said they were deceived by a fundamentalist church whose leaders promised to produce Jesus Christ in the flesh.

The True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints of the Last Days was ordered Monday to pay $270,000 to Kaziah Hancock and more than $20,000 to Cindy Stewart for fraud, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

As a condition of church membership, Hancock gave 67 acres of her farm and shares of water rights to the church for redistribution among members. Stewart contributed money from her retirement plan, attorney Don Redd said.

In return, church founder Jim Harmston promised payments on other property, membership in heaven's elite and the chance to meet Christ on earth, Redd said.

The eight-member jury threw out complaints of racketeering and unjust enrichment against the church and Harmston.

Harmston refused to comment and referred questions to his attorney, Mark Middlemas. Middlemas did not return calls Tuesday.

Harmston's wife, Elaine, told The Salt Lake Tribune that she was disappointed with the verdict, adding: "God's people have always been persecuted and right now is no different."

I know when you are involved in the janitorial profession you do not get to know the price of expensive jewelry, but that was the amount requested to fill the order.

Could they have bought the watch from a brother that owns a jewelry store, thus getting it very cheap?
If so why did he not just donate it? No the money was collected from poor Bethelites, so unless it was embezzled it went for the watch.

I find it interesting the quote above regarding the $10,000 Rolex worn by Jesus. It is notable that about the same time this article was written, someone at Bethel was wearing a $10,000 Rolex. That person was Max Larson. The story goes like this. It seems Brother Larson was approaching his fiftieth year of full time service. It was decided that an envelope would be circulated at all departments in Bethel with the “suggestion” of a contribution for Brother Larson’s fiftieth anniversary gift. If you did not contribute you made to feel like a heel for not supporting the effort. What was the gift? You guessed it, a $10,000 Rolex watch. Max wore his watch with pride and continues to do so today. As the president of the printing corporation it would appear the little lyric quoted above seemed not to prick the conscience of Brother Larson in the least as he serves in his leadership role of God’s organization on earth.
