Once upon a time, there lived a reasonably successful king named
Hezekiah, who learned that his kingdom was going to be pillaged
and raped in the distant future. His reaction was "Is it not so,
if peace and truth themselves will continue in my days?"
(2 Kings 20:19).
In other words, it ain't gonna happen in my lifetime, so what!
Today, you have the WTS ruled by creaky geezers who eagerly await
being wisked away to heavenly glory - leaving behind molested
children, burnt out publishers, malaise, and general rot. I get
a mental picture of wrinkled old men in football jerseys grabbing
the ball and trying to "run the clock out". It also reminds me
of former Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, who addressed the
matter of damage to the environment by suggesting that the Lord's
Second Coming might be soon (what the heck).
There have been situations like this that were handled better.
Even the dictator Francisco Franco paved the way for a freer,
improved nation - before his death. Apparently, the GB hasn't
ascended to this level of "worldly" moral development. I shouldn't
be too surprized - this is the same crew that specifically refuses
to apologize for anti-semitic remarks (Rutherford), false prophecy
(take your pick), or countless other mistakes that injured innocent
people. Many "worldly" corporations set a more ethical example
(like Firestone or Japanese airlines).
I wonder if these gerontocrats ever find the discreet hopes of
older publishers to be unflattering. After all, it is no great
secret that countless publishers, including elders, look forward
to change in the organization soon, based on the assumption that
various GB members can't live that much longer.
Does reform depend on selected funerals at headquarters? I hope
not - but it's more likely that things will get worse before they
get any better. They still dismiss complaints about molestation
and crooked elders with breezy rubber stamped letters. If anything,
the most recent WT (June 1) increases its arrogance ("So how could
his worshipers be unhappy...?" pg.14 - being happy is a sign of
true worship now, by the way)
Elders are reminded to turn in their whips in exchange for the
newer improved scourges (2 Chron. 10:14).
And so it goes.
