  Watchtower disputes $200K tax bill from Newburgh

  town of newburgh — the watchtower bible and tract society of new york is challenging nearly $200,000 in fire and other special district taxes assessed for three town of newburgh properties, including two hotels the organization bought to house volunteers helping build its world headquarters in warwick.. in a petition filed in orange county court last month, the umbrella organization for jehovah’s witnesses claimed that the town “either unintentionally as a mistake or intentionally and without lawful authority” miscoded the former hilton on crossroads court and the former hampton inn on route 300 for 2016, 2017 and this year.. with a combined market value of nearly $23 million, the hotel properties were not assessed town, county and school taxes for those years.

  but the town assessed $196,000 charges for the orange lake fire district and lighting and water districts during those years.. newburgh also assessed $1,600 in special district taxes over three years for a vacant commercial property watchtower owns at route 17k and route 300.. “petitioner would not be required to pay the resulting unjust charges if its exemption from taxes had been justly, correctly, and lawfully granted and administered,” watchtower’s attorneys wrote in the organization’s petition in county court.. watchtower bought the two hotel properties in 2014 as it built its 1.6 million-square-foot headquarters on kings drive in warwick.

  Tax exemption was granted for...

  ...property owned by a religious organization but used for residential purposes. That exemption still required the payment of special district taxes.

  Since the bldgs were used for "residential purposes" it appears that Watchtower got the tax exemption they should have gotten. If a fire had broken out they would certainly have expected the local fire dept to come to their rescue.

  It'll be interesting to see how this turns out but it seems like Watchtower should pay the tax.

  Of course all schools in the USA are GFZ so I will never go on the school grounds.

  i guess you can be physically out, like in a huge way, but definitely mentally in.. serena williams claims she won't be celebrating her daughter's first birthday.. i did know people like that, raised as a jw but never actually baptizing.

  that didn't mean they were not messed up in the head though..

  Talk about straining the knat and gulping down the camel....if she were baptised she'd be DF right about now for conceiving the child out of wedlock.

  I cant believe how backward that is. Thinking Jehovah is ok with her having a baby before marriage, but loses his shit over a birthday celebration.

  Have a baby, then get married, no problem for a jw! But to celebrate a birthday for a lovely child is a huge no no for a jw! wtf

  A married ... 'elder', in a Texas congregation was having an affair with a married 'sister' in the congregation. ...he could be heard by all in the congregation telling the EMT's "No blood! No blood! I do not accept blood!"

  May be WT came up with a new light that children could be borne without wedlock but celebrating birthdays is still demonic ?

  Yes Yahweh will cast down burning stones from heaven onto children if they celebrate a child's birthday.

  All keen observations of JW double standards. It's a great reminder of what Watchtower's heavy indoctrination can do to people's common sense.

  i have been on the phone the last to two weeks calling people i've known over the last forty years most of who are still jehovah's witnesses.

  some of these people who didn't know i was "out" talked to me and some who knew i was "out" still talked to me.

  some of the those people are even elders.. by book new boy will be dedicated to all the people who have killed themselves because of being a jehovah's witness or knowing others who were jehovah's witnesses.

  However what can you do to sisters? Take their position of oversight away or not let they give a prayer in the KH anymore.

  There is more to it than that. If the husbands refused to speak to you but their wives did there could be some serious consequences for the wives, from marital problems to congregation issues. You are outting the ones who were nice to you - isn't that backwards?

  No meetings memorial week

  the august monthly announcements letter, among other things, says that if a memorial is midweek, there is to be no midweek meeting and if at a weekend, then no weekend meeting.

  previously it was only no other meeting on the same day.

  is this because so many congregations now share halls that scheduling it has become almost impossible?.

  Decreasing the 'workload' on the rank and file seems to be the organizational trend.

  - Less hours to be a Regular Pioneer.

  - Just 30 hrs (I think) to Auxiliary Pioneer in the Spring months.

  - Only 2 days per week to attend meetings since the Home Book Study was dropped.

  - Less days of Circuit Assemblies - just one day each now.

  The driving time/miles is a real issue for some with the consolidations now, so maybe the organization is easing up a little to compensate. After all, the fewer meetings you attend that week the more likely you are to make the Memorial. Maybe they are even after a new 'peak' in attendance - or it's just to keep the attendance numbers from dropping (I'm not up on that - Have Memorial attendance numbers been holding steady?)

  YouTube Videos exposing JW organization are growing in popularity by the day.

  And I am amazed at the quality of the people presenting the videos. They are intelligent, well spoken, know the Organization, and make lots of sense. I honestly believe that Watchtower is losing it's very best people.

  I can't nearly keep up with them all - I'll have to check out TellTale Athiest since I've never heard of him/her.
