  NC, you make me smile when you are so charmingly clueless. I know a lot of charmingly clueless people and, if I knew you, I bet you'd be my favorite one of all!

  Is there any point in reminding you that the moral is that you're not supposed to do human sacrifice? That, 15 centuries before Agamemnon slayed Iphigenia to get favorable winds to sail to Troy, or the king of Moab butchered his son on the city wall to appeal for divine help against the Israelites, the God of the Jews insisted that human sacrifice was wrong? This thing that every cuture everywhere since the beginning of time practied -- that is what you shouldn't do?

  Probably not, because you have such industrial strength cluelessness. And it wasn't my point anyhow.

  The point I was making is that anybody who thinks they are better than all those peole that simply doesn't have a grasp on the degree to which humanity has, historically speaking, always practiced human sacrifice or the degree to which plenty of people smarter than you and me thought it was perfectly logical and normal to practice it.

  We are not better than those people. We are not smarter than them. We are not more morally pure. We happen to live in a different culture and, were we in that culture, we would have adopted the same attitudes and thinking that they did. To claim otherwise is simply moral preening. Which is what I said.

  Unlikely. Human sacrifice was pretty common at the time; indeed, for quite some time afterward (recall that the Carthaginians got some bad press for the practice before the Punic Wars). Actually, in plenty of cultures even well past the time of Christ.

  So, you probably would have done what everybody did: slit the kid's throat and move on with your life.

  Designs, you always conflate Christianity with JW-ism. I think that's unfortunate.

  My regret? Mostly that the arc of a family, beginning with an immigrant on a hardscrabble farm 100 years ago and advancing pretty well until some knucklehead joined the JWs, was set back by a generation. I'm living now the way my father should have been living and providing the educational and social opportunities for my children that he should have been providing for his. Most families don't have so many sons that they can afford to have them opt out of the entire project of living.

  i was 25 years a congregation member; ten years an elder; all told, up to 18 years an appointed man; a decade or so as a full-time minister; assembly speaker, with the pinnacle giving the public discourse at a district convention.. .

  i stopped being an active member of the congregation in november 2010, but it had been brewing for several years, with the customary gradual drifting away - all the necessary mental gymnastics as my spiritual views changed and doubts set in; quitting the theocratic ministry school; ceasing to answer; sitting quietly off to the side.

  i think the straw that broke the camels back was when family worship inevitably became family worship.

  It's official!

  tonight i just got my certificate: i'm officially a member of my church and a baptist.

  (i think of myself as just a general christian, but i like the laid-backishness of the baptists.

  i definitely don't think one denomination is better than anyone else though, and my church is multi-cultural, so i'm not a hater of other races like some southern baptists).

  How weird is this: when I was a window cleaner, I worked with a guy who was WWCOG and who had a last name that was almost the same as mine (like Anders/Anderson sort of thing). A JW and a WWCOG both working as window cleaners in the same town and with the same name! It's like we were the same person!

  someone else suggested this so i just figured, ok let's do it.. 1. all present jws died and i became the sole leader of the entire religion.

  2. then i would dissolve the religion and burn every last memory of it ever existing.

  3. all books would be burned, all buildings destroyed.

  I don't like "taking the lead"

  some men probably got off on the power/ego trip being a male jw gets you, but i never cared for it.

  i'm an introvert, and was an especially awkward one at that haveing been reaised in social isolation, so it was about the strangest feeling in the world when as a newly-baptized teenager (back in the day) i started to pioneer.

  i was about as green as you could get in every way but i was told i had to take the lead in the service meetings and the car group.

  Recently, I told my wife that I'd rather be her partner than her head and she didn't seem to know how to take it.

  Jesus! I Want To Believe, grow a pair.

  And, I wonder why it is that the sisters could not get it through their little heads that, if all you have in your purse is a paper napkin, then you don't have anything with which to cover your head. Protestants! Sheesh.
