I was counselled for having a slit in my skirt that came up to the back of my knee. The skirt was almost to my ankles. It was an elder's wife who didn't like it, and she made it quite clear. In front of a bunch of people, she told him it was inappropriate, and sent him over to counsel me.
I was only 13, but I remember standing up to him on it. I asked him if he'd like to try walking around in a skirt that long without a slit. I said I'd be unable to walk if it didn't have a slit to my knees, and that I could see plenty of people in the congregation whose skirts were shorter than where the slit came to on me. He still said he didn't think it was appropriate, and I said it wasn't his place (or his wife's) to tell me that, and that I would continue to wear it. I told him he was out of line in front of about 20 people.
it seems that most of the postings on this site are from the united states, england, and australia.
that could be a result that computers and internet are more easily available in those countries.
plus, do to the fact that most postings are from those countries, we also have the most complaints.
I'm an American, but I've been living in different places around the world. I lived in Hong Kong for 14 months, and saw a Watchtower once in that time. I don't know if the person was a JW or if she had just been handed the mag. I never saw a KH, although my sister made quite sure to give me the address from the yearbook.
I've lived in France for over 7 months, and have never seen a JW or a KH.
i was a 3rd generation witness on both sides of the family.
even my great-grandomthers were considered witnesses, but i don't know if they were baptized.
my parents however were always considered weak and still are even though my mom has become more involved & for longer periods of time in the last 15 yrs.
My father was always very strong. Elder. My mother was always weak, in and out.

i remember some study conductors who had the habit of calling on people in the audience that seemed distracted or unprepared--on purpose so as to embarass them.
some were so out of it when the mic was handed to them they had to ask what was the question, why did you call on me i didnt have my hand up, etc.

One time about 15 minutes before the Circuit Assembly was going to start, the CO decided that he didn't like what I had rehearsed to say (I was giving my experiences). He told me to change it to something else, but gave me no idea what to say. So during the song, we were coming up with a whole new interview.
I've been called on when I didn't have my hand up.
On the subject of elder's counsel on student talks:
One time I was working on "audience contact and use of notes" (sad that I can still remember those chapter titles). I looked at my notes 1, yes, 1 time during my entire talk, and he gave me a W. He said it was the wrong time to look at them. Even people in the congregation were telling me that they would never have done that, and what a great job I had done.

I think it was because it was drummed into my head from the time I was a small child. I never knew any different, and had the superiority complex that goes along with JWs...I thought we were right and better than the rest. Now I know better.

No, not really. I don't expect a lot. I tend to expect too much from myself, and expect to be let down by others. Force of habit.
