  Did you take down notes at the meetings?

  were you the type to always jot down every little detail the brothers said from the podium?.

  i found it amusing when especially sisters were always writting notes in their pads when the brother was giving a talk in the front.. i wonder if it was because they found the topic interesting, or because they wanted to look as if they were learning something.. i was all ears, but never took down notes.

  that's odd, coming from a person who is "visual".

  Sometimes on Sundays, if I thought it was going to be an interesting talk. You know, like how God was going to kill all the unbelievers at Armageddon and why we should be happy about that. *rolls eyes* It makes me sick to think I got excited about slaughter.

  I took notes at the special talks and at the conventions/assemblies. I don't know why, other than to stay awake and because they told us to. Or was it that I wanted to look really spiritual (I actually was very "spiritual" for a long time.) in the hopes of attracting a man. *gag*

  Discipline or abuse - Which?

  i am having a discussion on another board about the topic of disciplining children.

  some people seem to think that as long as the child did something to "deserve" it then the parent has the right to hit anyway they want.. grrrr.

  many of us grew up in a society that accepted the practice of corporal punishment.

  In my case:

  Was the purpose of the punishment to preserve discipline or to train or educate the child? Or was the punishment primarily for the parent’s gratification or the result of the parent’s uncontrolled rage?

  If it was my mother "disciplining" us, it was definitely uncontrolled rage. My father had a better handle on his temper. She would lose it and just keep on hitting.

  Was the punishment appropriate to the child’s misbehavior? (However, no matter how serious a child’s misbehavior, extremely hurtful or injurious punishment is never justified.)

  Not usually.

  Was a less severe but equally effective punishment available?

  Always. Less severe punishments were handed out to my sister, not me.

  Was the punishment unnecessarily degrading, brutal, or beastly in character or protracted beyond the child’s power to endure?

  What...you mean like having to stand there half naked with your trousers around your ankles and your hands on the kitchen side (counter) whilst you were getting repeatedly hit?

  If physical force was used, was it recklessly applied?

  Fairly often.

  I don't think I "deserved" it. I was a fairly good child. Sure, my sister and I bickered sometimes, but that's what kids do. Especially when there's a 5 year age gap between them.

  Abuse teaches children to be the victims or aggressors of the future!

  Very true. I have to work very hard to control my temper. (We have no children.) A couple of times, I've had to go outside and hit/break things when I'm really angry because the dogs have done something really bad. It's really hard to control. I lose my temper very rarely, because I have such tight control on it. But when I do lose it, it's ugly. That's why I go outside. I don't want my dogs to be afraid of me. I've never abused them, but only because I work so hard at controlling my anger.

  i've known for years that if i was visited at my home by jehovah's witnesses, i would have become a do not call.

  i would have firmly but politely told the witnesses to never come back to my door and bother me again.

  since i was raised "in the truth", i learned the religion from infancy.

  I was raised in "the truth."

  Long story short:

  My leaving was a combination of things...my father admitting he sexually abused me and the elders saying it was OK for him to remain an elder. Because of that, I started questioning everything (without really researching...just wondering). I got a divorce from my abusive husband, even though the elders said I shouldn't. They took no action against him when I told them he raped me, because there weren't "two witnesses." Duh. I then rebelled. Had a fling on the rebound. Then met my now-husband. My ex-husband started stalking me, and found things I had written online. Printed them out, showed them to family and apparently elders. They came over and asked me if I was having a sexual relationship with someone. I told them yes and that I was going to continue. I was DF'd.

  It wasn't until my DF'd aunt who I hadn't seen or heard from in 25 years (through no fault of her own) found me in an online search that I started learned the doctrinal/organisational lies. She told me about the UN scandal, and I never looked back.

  My copy of Crisis of Conscience should be arriving any day now.

  Local Needs Talk Given About My Family

  this week, the local needs talk dealt with showing loyalty to jehovah and his organization.

  the account of achan and his family was discussed.

  because they did not report what achan had done, the entire family was punished by jehovah with death.

  Extreme Sports? Ever get counselled?

  when a jw, i began to get seriously into mountaineering / rock / ice climbing.

  somehow i escaped being counselled about it, by talking to an elder in advance of their finding out, and having a fit.

  statistics prove that more persons die from unroped "scrambling" than mountaineering with ropes).

  I got counselled for riding friggin' roller coasters. 'You're not showing proper appreciation for the gift of life. You're taking unnecessary risks.' Blah blah blah. *rolls eyes*

  Oh how sad and horrible. He is not showing love at all. If he doesn't love you for who you are, he doesn't love you at all. I learned that in my first marriage as well. :(

  Thanks again, everyone. I've been out for 2 1/2 years now, and most of the rubbish that I was taught since early childhood was discounted in my head. Now it's all gone. This site has been very helpful for the past however long I've been here...I've forgotten. :D
