Where has all the money gone?

a number of years ago when i was still active, our service group was having a coffee break with the visiting circuit overseer.

during the conversation he mentioned that the "society" was now being run like a business.

being raised in the "truth" i thought that rather odd (and my eyes began to be opened!

I think there is a possibility it could be something more sinister.

While the Governing Body were tripping the light fantastic in their top floor office, there is NO way the accountants up at Bethel were not watching the money.

Things appeared to be in order until very recently. As a result, everyone signed off on that letter coming out and a special meeting being called at all the Kingdom Halls to tell them JWs were about to embark on a building work like the world had never seen, The letter said they werent even going to wait for some properties to be for sale, if they saw a strategic property they were just going to make an offer.

Do you all remember that?

That was TEN months ago.

And I think they would have rather eaten ground glass than have to announce a halt.

So something happened quickly. What could that be? An embblzement that has only recently been uncovered? Bad investments of VERY recent origin? A big lawsuit or series of them looming?

Enjoying autumn

i always did as kid.

warm days, and cool nights, changing leaves, sunny days of the indian summer or eastern european equivalent called "grandma summer".

There is such a feeling of change in the air. A feeling that something momentous is happening.

The earth and its native inhabitants are gearing up for a big slumber.

I have been studying (as a hobby) with a naturalist who does field trips in the countryside and shows us all the plants and roots that can be used for food or to fight winters ails.

It is fascinating to learn how the depth of the roots or the width of the leaves etc, indicate the type of winter that is coming and so on.

I love photography also, so taking my camera and going on one of his hikes and learning while taking pictures is such a relief from work and day to day "stuff".

I gather that spring in the natural world is pretty amazing too but I dont see how it can top NOW! (for me).

JWs are ruled by a Governing Body. Mormons have the Quorum of Twelve.JWs have an annual meeting. So do Mormons.
JWs have revised their Bible recently. The Mormons did the same.
JWs have a slick website. So do the Mormons.
JWs go door-to-door. Mormons practice the same.
JWs now have Family Study Night. Mormons have the same.
In many cases, Mormons beat JWs to the punch.

Dont they also have their very own Caleb and Sophia and had it first?

Hello Cold-Dodger, its nice to meet you.

I really enjoyed reading your post, you write with different descriptive words but otherwise very much like a J Dub would.

I think the biggest difference that as a former JW I would have said existed between us is the immortality of the soul.

Mormons obviously believe in this. JWs do not.

We were taught that immortality has to be granted by God and is only given to special people (like the 144,000) and that even Jesus himself didnt get it until he died faithful on earth first.

JWs are never given the hope of having it but the consolation prize if they do everything right is they can live forever which is different than being immortal because you have to stay in Gods good graces or at any moment in living forever you could be cut off.

Its like spiritual life support

Funny that so many of us worked so hard hoping for that!

My Mormon thing that I never could understand clearly was the trinity. Mormons dont/do believe in it?

It always seemed muddled to me.

One more thing!

(I always got the secret impression that the higher up JWs were jealous of the Mormons because they were a) happier b) better growth/larger numbers c) richer )

The JWs probably didnt talk to you when you would see them in their tract work because you have a strong (if weird and incorrect) religion. They like people who are "less" religous to try and convert instead of lost causes with false strong false beliefs (which describes themselves, ironically).

Construction Halts & other cutbacks - Here's what I think happened

to get to the point straight away i think the crane accident that occurred at warwick was a significant catalyst that has caused the org.

to change its plans suddenly.. list of assumptions, not all of them are validated.

Very well written and logically based original post Listener, thank you for taking the time to write that out.

Two things I am still puzzled over though,

1) The letter read at the special elders meeting last Jan. (2014) detailing a ramped up building work.

What could have happened since that point? If not "something happened", then something they became aware since that letter that happened earlier?

2) The look, attitude, demeanor of Anthony Morris on that morning worship video a month ago.

He looked and acted devastated. He was incapable of hiding it. What had he just become aware of?

So it may very well be what you stated. But how, with all the accountants and quarterly reports etc did they believe they were poised to ramp up hugely?

How could they have thought that? Because the letter (in order to be read in January) had to have been composed about this time last year.

Well of the two words they have in their identity 1) Jehovah and 2) Witness, it seems the word witness would be easy to morph in to the word worshiper.

How was it when you were a JW as a kid?

whats worse than being an adult jw?

when i was a kid i always had a bad concience all the time.

i believed i would not survive armageddon for the fact that i didn't like going to service and i didnt like going to the meetings.

As far as the meetings they were long and boring and the information was very dry. I dont see that as a detriment to myself though.

I see it as a throw back to what everyone was doing in previous centuries. People trudged to church, sat on hard wooden pews and listened to a dried up stick of a minister threaten them with the flames of hell.

If you come from a European or American background then that is exactly what your forefathers and mothers did as children.

It just seemed more antiquated to us compared to other chidlren of our time.

As for the field service that was cruel and unusual punishment!

Especially considering the fact that as it turns out, it was all for a really crappy religion that no one who really looks in to it could be proud of.

I know I keep saying this but LAST January - not even a year ago- they had the special meeting for elders to tell them about the ramped up building work. The letter that was read said this was going to be the greatest building work the world had ever seen!

So now that is all on hold and they are focusing on the preaching work and everyone is saying how great that is...does that mean they thought the building plans were NOT great last January?

Is it all just "great" come what may?

Just so ridiculous.
