The Creation Story of Genesis 1 in its literary context

genesis 1 , the priestly (p) account of creation, has often been compared with the enuma elish, the akkadian creation myth.

some have claimed that p is dependent on the latter, but this is highly improbable.

in terms of similarities, most note the parallel of marduk splitting the body of the sea-monster tiamat and creating the heavens and earth from it, and elohim's division of the thwm "watery deep" (hebrew cognate of akkadian tiamat) into the heavens, earth, and seas.

Moses wasn't the sole author of Genesis. He didn't get an inspired download of Genesis when he became an anointed one of God. There were preserved ancient documents that were given to Moses at the proper time. Noah's log was one of those documents along with the story of Job.

A May 15, 2003 Watchtower revealed there may have been a log of Noah that was passed down through many generations. There are ancient records that say Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve, was the inventor of written language. He possibly was the first one to get the accounts of Genesis started. The early inspired records would have been passed on from Seth to Enoch and then from Enoch to Noah and then to Shem.

I had a few religious discussions with Eric over e-mail a few years back. He tolerates no belief outside his own. I tried to reason with him but he would not listen. At that point I realized he was still an elder of the Witnesses but with a dogma of his own. He's right back to doing judicial committee meetings. What, does he not remember the account of his own judicial meeting? He should re-watch it on his Youtube channel. He needs to be humbled. The guy's a hypocrite.

Deceased GB member Guy Pierce was a former Mormon. When he was alive he introduced the family worship evening to his fellow GB buddies and they picked it up.

he knew the injunctions of acts 15 - yet by his own admission in his letters to the corinthians admitted that he bought meat sacrificed to idols and ate it.

so would he have refused this meat if he were about to die of hunger?.

If the Jews and Muslims accept blood transfusions then it's ok. You can't break the Mosaic law if it saves a life. David and his men eating the showbread proved that. You can break the sabbath to save an animal too. There is no law against love.

Is Watchtower totally off base on Armageddon?

to me it is quite evident that the gt spoken about in matthew 24, mark 13 and luke 21 is a one time, non-repeatable localized event resulting in the destruction of jerusalem and the temple followed by the dispersion of surviving jews throughout the nations.. however, what is not so clear to most is that the gt of revelation deals with the same event.

my understanding is that the gb of jehovah witnesses has no clue as to how to interpret the apocalyptic messages found both in the synoptics and revelation.

but steve greg has armageddon down pat.

I can see Matthew 24:14 being localized to the known inhabited world and the tribulation meant for only fleeing Christians. The problem arises at Matthew 24:29-35 when the tribulation comes to an end for the Christians. It says they see something in orbit that blocks the sun and moon along with a figure of Jesus up there too. You would think other civilizations would report that spectacular event in their writings as well. It says all the tribes of the earth will be in fear of this event.

It's because of the new heavens and new earth prophecy. If all good people go to the new heavens after death then what's with the new earth that's repeated in the old and new testament?

She should be thanking her west African genes for her win due to fast twitch muscle fibers, something that east Africans are lacking. I wonder why west Africans move faster than east Africans. Are there more predatory cats in the west than the east?

Alteration of Revelation 3:14 in the 4th century to support the emerging Trinity doctrine

in an earlier thread another poster asserted that there is no evidence that revelation 3:14 played a part in the 4th controversy that led to the trinity doctrine.

this was claimed as evidence that the description of jesus as “the beginning of the creation of god” in the verse was not understood to mean that jesus was god’s first creation.

the scholarly greek–english lexicon of the new testament & other early christian literature 3e (2001) by bauer, arndt, gingrich, and danker, in its latest edition states that “first creation” is indeed the probable meaning of the greek phrase.

How many verses do we have saying that the angels were created? I don’t know any but I’d be interested to find out.

I know of one only. It's about a cherub being created that eventually watches over the garden of Eden. A uniform made of multiple gemstones lined with gold was made for him on the day of his creation, His office duties also had him walk a path made with stones of fire.

Ezekiel 28:13-14
