For those who have never been to Ohio, that state quite religious. There are huge Amish and Mennonite communities there. Even the grocery stores have hitching posts so the Amish can tie their horses up. Try going to Kidron, Ohio on Auction day and you'll think you've gone back to the 1800's. The women of these religions MUST wear dresses and have a head covering, a lace cap, black bonnet, or a crocheted piece on the top of their upswept hair. Driving to Berlin or Mt. Hope one has to really be on the lookout for horses & buggies as you round the corners and come over hills. There are lots of other religions represented too.

Religion/Mental Illness/Schizoprenia
by ranmac ini have a very close friend whos history of traumatic experiences and drug use has culminated into very severe mental and physical detioratation.
i dont want to get into personal information but one major symptom is that he has become religiously deluded about himself.
to be blunt, he believes he is a special prophet chosen by jehovah.

Ranmac, you are a good friend to stand by someone so seriously mentally ill. Mental illness is devastating to the person going through it and their families and close friends. When working in law enforcement, we often encountered people with severe mental problems and they often had delusions of a religious nature. Perhaps the part of the mind is where God and worship are clustered are particularly vulnerable to illness. We usually had to have people forcibly incarcerated in a mental hospital, but this is usually only a temporary fix and the patient doesn't want to continue with the meds that made them feel better, because the feel so good now...a paradox. You have an uphill battle with your friend, you have my admiration and I wish you and your friend the best.

How do i overcome this guilt and fear?
by newcomer1982 inive recently decided not to be a witness anymore and at the age of 28 was still so afraid to tell my parents.
the truth is their life and knew i would hurt them.
ive had such a battle with the elders and because my dad is an elder its even worse.

DesirousOfChange, I agree with you completely, it is extremely difficult living this hypocrite life we lead, but the thought of losing everything is even more difficult. One day maybe I'll have the strength to just do it. If I just up and left, it would just kill my parents and my dear hubby.

New JW shows up at my wife's work.....
by Open mind inso my wife shows up for work and finds out that a self-employed consultant is going to be on site for a few days.
she also finds out through the jw grapevine that the consultant is a jw.
(my wife and i are faders, but still attend the occasional meeting.

Maybe the consultant JW felt she didn't have anything really in common with Open Mind's wife and wasn't comfortable just making chit-chat. That shouldn't excuse out and out rude behavior though. I've never been good at making chit-chat with 'worldly' people because I never learned how. For that matter I'm no good at making chit-chat at cong. gatherings either...what do you say when you refuse to go out in service and try to find any reason not to go the meetings and you don't get excited when people announce they are pioneering? I recently told a sister I was sorry to hear her hubby got appt'd an elder, then I had to explain myself.

On becoming atheist - the tug of war
by Nickolas inperhaps, if you are a theist, you might not want to read this.
if you are nevertheless curious about how an atheist thinks, then please read on.. i don't think there are any active members of this board who have been atheists all their lives (are there?).
i think virtually all of us transitioned into non-belief from a religious beginning.

Remote Viewing-has anyone heard of this or tried this?
by PaintedToeNail ini read an article on this 5 years ago or so and came upon this topic again in reviewing a book on amazon.
it entails what i think was called 'quantum entanglement', and supposedly used by the cia & the military.
it sounds fascinating to me..

@Blondie-Wow, that would be an interesting test to take. I'd probably have higher level of ignorance than coincidence allows for!
