  If Im NOT JW, what can I be?

  i have a jw friend who said to me "i'd be interested to know if there are any other religions that teach what jws teach".

  after the post on "food for thought" which gave details of modern day bible students, i thought i'd ask the question:.

  what religions are there that either have similar roots to the jw religion, or that have similar teachings?

  The Worldwide Church of God is very similar in outlook and doctrine to JW's. Have you ever heard of "The Plain Truth" magazine? Rumor had it at one time that the head of the WWCOG, Herbert Armstrong, was once affiliated with the JW's, but I don't know if it's true.

  Herbert's son, Garner Ted Armstrong, used to have a TV program. I don't know whether he's still in the preaching business or not.

  I had a former co-worker who was a member of the WWCOG. She didn't celebrate Christmas and had other weird habits and beliefs. I think I was influential in getting her to stop going to that church, too.

  As to what you can be, you can be anything. The sky's the limit.

  i am an active jw and was raised as one.

  i have been watching the site for a while and thought it could benefit from the opinions of someone who is happily a member of the jw's.

  i will not get into any argumets that lead to nothing except name calling, and will not talk with anyone who is just plain mean (plenty of them in here).

  Welcome to the board. I am glad you are "happy." If anyone here seems to have a disagreeable attitude, believe me, it's because most of us tried to be faithful, good and true JW's but were branded otherwise despite our best efforts.

  In the book entitled "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses" by Gary and Heather Botting, the point is made that most JW's don't just leave, but feel pushed out. But once we get a taste of freedom and lose that grip of oppression, we grow accustomed to it and hang on to it for all we're worth.

  Hi, Undecided. You don't sound too "undecided" from your post. It's interesting that you still hold to the JW dichotomy of "JW's versus 'churches of Christendom.'" Life is very disappointing, isn't it. Most of my pretty illusions flew away some time ago.

  However, I believe that some discord and disagreement make life a lot more interesting that the bland German soldier conformity of JW's.

  I told you that I love you. It's easy to love you because I don't know you; therefore, there is no reason to "hate" you.

  Don't you want us to dislike you at least? After all, we are "apostates!" I find it somewhat distressing that some JW's still appear not to dislike me. Maybe you can give me some pointers so they won't see as so non-threatening.

  When JWs used to have FUN!!!

  when i started associating in the late 1960s the jws were very sociable and had frequent fun events.

  here are some examples of the kinds of events we enjoyed, why they existed, and then the reason they were taken away:.

  sports: being involved in school or professional sports was frowned upon, so the brothers in the hall would arrange for sports for every other weekend.

  Once my elder husband and I were with a group of JW's at a friend's house. Somebody started a game which my husband (now ex-husband by the grace of God) did not understand. It was one of those where you pass an object around and have to state a sentence with an item in it that begins with the same letter as your last name,and he never caught on, but everybody else did.

  It's never any fun if there's an elder right in your household, especially one with the reasoning ability of another species.

  I love you / you-all, too. I am especially fond of our fellow posters here such as Kent, Farkel and many others who work very hard at keeping us informed. Their documentation is so thorough that I don't see how you can use the word "deceived" with reference to their wonderful work.

  You need to check Randy's Kent's, Osarsif's and others' sites, then come back with the blinders off.

  whats a dub ? is this an americanism ?

  the term 'dub' originates from where exactly ?

  - i understand that it's used in reference to those considered 'active' jws, but as to what the term actually means i dunno - please enlighten me ...

  When I first saw the term "dub" I thought it referred to the JW practice of "downloading" Watchtower drivel versus real thinking and drawing one's own conclusions.

  British JW sues Watchtower Society

  this case is about a british jw, on behalf of jehovah's witnesses at large, sued the watch tower bible and tract society of pennsylvania.

  this case goes base to 1997, but is interesting in that the british jw man alleged 'defamation of character' against the wts.

  he sued over an article appearing in the watchtower magazine.

  the way to control religion is to control the sacred writings.

  the easiest way to control the sacred writings is to write the sacred writings and declare them inspired or divinely directed.

  Hi, Gary. I remember a psychology professor pointing out that controlling a person's environment 24 hours a day makes that person a slave both mentally and physically.

  The JW's do a good job of keeping their adherents so occupied with busy work and preparation for same that I marvel at the miracle of all of us here who managed to find time to start thinking and take positive action to end the repression.
