Who is Charles Swindoll? He doesn't sound like a JW, but in the '70's I remember a talk by a Brother Swindoll (or am I confusing the name with another "S" name?) from Bethel.

Bible Writers not just ignorant "goat herders"
by applehippie inreally, the bible was written by nothin' but goat herders?
i don't post much but this does irk me.
yes a few may have been shepherds or fisherman, but a fair amount were far more educated and were professionals in their fields of occupation.

For the time they lived in, they were experienced, well traveled and well educated. But they knew nothing of astronomy and a lot of other subjects. Galileo was persecuted by the church because he realized that the earth was not the center of the universe. Smart as they were, they were ignorant by the standards of today. There wasn't even a scientific method to test hypotheses.

con artist JW
by outsmartthesystem inso my good ol soon to be ex father in law told me a few years ago (before i had told him of my horrible apostate ideas) about a "client" of his.
my fil used to be involved in the insurance/finance industries.
he had a lady client that was about 20 years older than him.

Was this poor old woman "of sound and disposing mind and memory" when she made the decision to leave everything to your FIL? Her kids could contest the will on that basis, I believe.
In some states, there are laws against taking advantage of senior citizens. This situation may not be as straightforward as your FIL believes.

Great story! As a convert with almost no JW family, I often wonder how much more traumatic it must be for born-ins to get out. You, obviously, are smarter than the average bear, and 'waaaay smarter than the average JW. That helps. I am so glad you were willing to accept the things you learned instead of rationalizing so you could stay connected to the bogus religion.
Have you read Eric Hoffer's The True Believer? If not, I recommend it. It deals with some of the issues you brought up in your post.
Welcome to freedom!

Mars One Expedition
by Jomavrick inyou have probably heard that there is a mars expedition that is being planned in 2023 where a permanent human settlement will be established.
people are applying for the opportunity at http://applicants.mars-one.com/.
think about it, this might be the one chance we have to leave all the door knocker jw's behind,,,,,,.

I suggest that we start a fund to send all JW's to Mars so they can start their "Paradise" without any flack from evil "apostates" or an evil world order.

I have just published my first book. ( consequences to follow )
by sieborg ini stopped going to the meetings last september and told them that i didn't want to be badgered.
to be fair, they have not visited or called in nine months, apart from passing on their hello's to my wife and daughter who still attend.
anyhoo, i have had a fair amount of time to do pretty much what i have wanted over the past 9 months and so i have just finished my book.

Thanks, laverite. In the 7th grade, on a spelling quiz, I spelled "judgment" as "judgement." My teacher marked it wrong, so I looked it up in the dictionary, where it showed both spellings. My teacher explained that "judgement" is the British spelling. I need to take a British spelling course.

Not even eating with such a man?
by Marvin Shilmer innot even eating with such a man?.
today i added a new article to my blog taking a closer look at watchtowers doctrinal position that jehovahs witnesses should not even eat a meal with disfellowshipped individuals.
as it turns out watchtower holds families among jehovahs witnesses to one standard and holds itself to a wholly different standard.

They're not even pretending that their inconsistency is "Bible-based." They are just taking care not to tarnish their image even more. Image is everything.

"camp Councillor" should be "camp counselor."

School for Congregation Elders
by C.O.B.E.Beef ini attended the school late last year, and it was an emotional and mental rollercoaster for me.
i was already divided in my heart to say the least.
one of the instructors stayed in my home for the week, and my family genuinely enjoyed his company.

That was quite an experience, COBE. I'm so glad it woke you up; that makes it worth listening to that drivel. I would add to their list the following:
ameobae
pond scum (got this one from Farkel)
worldly people
married sisters
single sisters

Think outside the college Box
by Giordano ini was very impressed with the following information from kiplinger's magazine and considering my own experience it might be helpful to many on this forum.
a lot has changed for those of us who graduated high school and decided to listen to our jw parents and our congregation and pioneer instead of furthering our education.
i was that person, an indifferent hs student, not too prone to go on to college.

Band on the Run is right about certain skills (such as knowing the French language) not qualifying one for gainful employment. I went back to college in my mid 30's, thanks to my second husband. His philosophy was that education was about "living with yourself," not just employment. I had been a top student in French in high school and wanted to pursue a degree in it.
What finally saved me career-wise was getting a government job. I came to Nevada and got a municipal job, first as a legal secretary, then as a human resources/hiring assistant, and, finally as a records librarian for the Building Department (my favorite and best paying job of all). Having the education can help you to score high on civil service tests. Tests are not weighted as much as they used to be in selection of employees, except for the federal government. A high score on a test can get you inside the door, but it won't keep you there.
Because I have a pension now, I am 'way better off that I would be with Social Security alone. Now I am learning court reporting, as there is a dire shortage of people with this skill, and I'm told there is little to no age discrimination because what really counts is skill.
