Young people ask: How come teenagers who give in to their raging hormones and do what comes naturally are disfellowshipped when Brother Elder, who has a wife and family, is considered a hero if he commits "adultery" with a 4-year old?

How do the locals speak near you?
by sleepy inin britian every city has its own accent and local words that people use.. if you worked a council estate in cardiff you were joe-va's witnesses.. a reply on the ministry could be "you joe-vah's witnesses is it?.
i remmember working in shefield and people would call each other "ducky".
what were witnesses called where you live?

When I was growing up in NE Tennessee/SE Kentucky, my relatives called JW's "Hobeys." I was the first (unfortunately, not the last) member of my family to become a full-fledged JW, giving me as sense of real specialness about displaying a high degree of stupidity on a daily basis. A lot of people in the U.S. say "Jehovah Witnesses" omitting the possessive, while JW's that I knew insisted that they were "one of Jehovah's Witnesses."

Letter of disassociation to my JW family
by Larry ingreetings - would some one please confirm that the aug 2002 km has the article entitled "display christian loyalty when a relative is disfellowshipped" i want to be accurate with my quotes in this letter.
speaking of which, i'm sending the below letter to my jw family - if you have time please let me know your thoughts -thanks - larry :).
to all my practicing jehovah witness family members:.

Larry,
I know you want to leave the door open in case another member of your family decides to wake up and smell the whatever. You might add that to your letter. Otherwise, I think you are to be commended for your courage and character.

They certainly don't want to risk having two or more witnesses to what they are about to try.
I'm sure there will be lots of supporters outside with recording devices of their own. Alert the media!

Garrison Keillor and The Brethren
by COMF ini'm reading lake wobegon days, the 1985 best-seller by garrison keillor.
this is the first fiction i've read in several years (usually it's technical manuals), and it was an excellent choice.
"we're in the wrong place," mother told him.

I used to be a regular listener to "A Prairie Home Companion," Garrison's NPR radio broadcast. He wove religious commentary into lots of his monologues, such as Father Emil's annual sermon on birth control ("If you don't want to go to Minneapolis, why get on the train?"); fear of hospital visitation from the Lutheran minister with his liberal theology ("historical context"); and the question he, as a member of the Sanctified Brethren, would ask ("Why do Christians have to mow the grass?")
The book you're reading has a great all-purpose lecture I used to give my daughter when she got out of line -- all in fun, of course. It went something like this: I. Things have got to change around here, and change fast! A. You're sending your mother to an early grave. B. Your cousins don't pull this kind of stuff....etc.
Once he joked, "Did you hear about the Jehovah's Witness who converted to Unitarianism? He went from door to door for no particular reason." Too funny!

Irony of Drama and "Deception" Warnings
by Had Enough ini just want to post a couple of observations i made at this past weekend's dc.
someone else posted that they were embarrassed for the "actors" because of the lame script.
i have to agree.

If only it were true that the JW religion is like all of the others. Members of other religions still accept and love family members who have chosen to go to a different church. Members of other religions can report pedophilia and other crimes to the police. JW's have a lot to learn about doing the right thing from other churches.

I left when my daughter was in second grade. Unfortunately, her dad remained a JW, so she had an unhappy childhood most of the time. However, it is so different with my granddaughter. My daughter chose not to be an adult JW, and is one semester from a degree in chemistry.
My granddaughter, now 12, has had a birthday party every year, gets showered with fun and gifts on holidays, has run for school office, plays the cello with her school orchestra -- in short, has a life that my daughter and I could hardly have dreamed of. She is learning to make her own choices and decisions, refusing to be dictated to. She had heard about the Kingdom Hall and refuses to go with her grandfather when she has short visits with him. She describes him as "controlling."
Bless you for giving your daughter a chance at a better life!
Regards,
Mum

Good-bye everyone!
by Billygoat ini just wanted to share a few things that are on my heart and mind...hope you don't mind reading.
the church i'm affiliated with has several sister churches around the world.
the purpose of those relationships is to encourage and help each other grow in our relationship with god and christ, whether it be by spiritual encouragement or physical help.

Mum
Andi, I'm so excited for you.
I notice that you are deeply involved with your spiritual community. Wouldn't it be interesting if you took a couple of your friends in your current church to the local Kingdom Hall and amused yourself as you were shunned and your friends were love bombed? If you ever decide to do this, please invite me along to enjoy the fireworks!
Wishing you a safe, spiritually fulfilling trip to Latvia,
Mum

Cygnus is in bad shape
by Cygnus injust so i don't miss anybody who is interested.... my results from the ekg and the echogram showed a severe leak in a heart valve.
i am going for an angiogram on the 15th but the cardiologist says the liklihood is great that i will need open heart surgery.
rare for a 30 year old but if necessary, it is necessary.. no word yet on the results of the blood work for liver enzymes and hepatitis.

Cygnus, I am one of your biggest fans, though I don't usually say such things. Those of us who pray will be praying for you, and those of us who don't pray will be thinking of you during your ordeal and directing our collective thoughts and energy toward your healing.
You are young and strong, so I am very optimistic for you. If you can't keep us posted, please have someone else do it for you.
Wishing you the best,
Mum
