I have no reason to doubt the reports of robberies, murder, rape and political corruption as I saw it in their newspaper. People do not make these things up. A few were elaborated on, but most were short blurbs, obviously taken from Police blotters. If you are not familiar with newspapers, they serve to record local events that are matters of PUBLIC RECORD. Newspapers thus amplify and reinforce that public record.

I hasten to add that the reporting was the general, neutral and objective reporting expected of professional journalists.

Newspapers also have space to cover where the paying ads are not. There is no reason to doubt or impugn the integrity of any newspaper in this regard, save perhaps the yellow journalism rags and supermarket tabloids dealing with rock stars and aliens. I was reading the largest mainstream newspaper of that country.

For someone with "no dog in the fight" you sure are defensive and testy about it; careful, your dis-objectivity is showing

It occurs to me that most Muslims don't know their Islamic studies very well: they just take a shouting mullahs word for it.

I decided to read the HG Wells Outline of History section on Islam. Then I started through some of his history of the Catholic Church and I'm still working on this treatment of the Reformation and beyond.

I skipped around and found one of his summaries: he rates Islam higher than Christianity. It turns out he either favored Islam or despised Christianity.

However, he says that they are both losers, in the end.

His works were pre W.W.I: that does give him 1200 years on Islam and 1900 years on Christianity. He is essentially minus the experiences of our lifetime.

I'm attaching the help screen, Tiles Left, from the version that I ahve at home.

It shows 3 suites of 1-9, 4tiles each per number. Then the 4 directions have 4 tiles each. I have seen Middle included in another version.

Then the Seasons are shown, at 1 tile each: SPRing, SUMmer, WINter, AUTumn.

The last are the Flowers: Orchid, Plum, Mum and Bamboo.

Match any 2 Flowers or any two Seasons and the "odd tiles" are accounted for.

This totals 144 tiles. There are some subtleties that I have not mastered yet.

Mary's observations are pretty much the reality and the post in the URL is pretty much the idealistic "pie in the sky" scenario. The post is classic or "textbook" theory and is thrown out the window at every turn.

Ever been in a Muslim country? I have. (This is NOT the same country that I frequently visit.)

So, I'm sitting in the lobby of a major hotel in the capital of this country, waiting for a bus transfer. I'm reading the local newspaper: corruption, bridge opening w/ ribbon cutting, robbery, rape murder, corruption, festival, political rally, robbery, murder, rape; this went on and on.

This was smaller than the LA papers, but he density of bad news was higher. So, I don't see that anybody does anything more about Islam than go through the motions. What I have seen of those motions leads me to believe that it is more mind-numbing than Christianity.

We see the same thing about Christianity: hollow devotion. What does the scripture say: "a form of godly devotion but denying the power thereof" or something to that effect?

In fairness, I think the newspapers there were not as refined as our papers and could have diluted the local situation much more; still, my impression was of a higher density of crime. Also, my view is based on cursory examinations: but I intend to look further.

Why are JW's, Moonies, Scientologists and Mormons so concerned with ex-members? (All recent American 'religions' ...hmmm...with the sole path to salvation only available through them... - see a common thread?)

Hmm... that makes me wonder what's beyond the door of that "Ex Mormons for Jesus" storefront that I pass occasionally.
