  Our teenagers first Christmas tree

  we had fun putting together our first artificial tree last week, it came out so pretty!

  the lights and cheap ornaments just add to it.. we have been careful to close our blinds at night to avoid our jw neighbors from calling in the elders, that worked for a few days until we decided to go out for an early dinner and yes, i forgot to close the blinds!

  as we drove up to the garage door i could see the tree in the front room and started to freak out a little.

  Next year would be appropriate to put up lights reading "ASK ME ABOUT 1914" since it will be the centennial!

  I'm with backseatdevil. I've been to many congregations from various denominations of "Christendom". In my experience the passing of the plate is the exception rather than the rule. The majority have donation boxes, and if they do pass a plate it's usually for a special occasion i.e somebody is sick/lost their job and need a helping hand.

  Raised On the Third Day?

  i have some potentially controversial questions.. i have always wondered about these things in the back of my mind, but i would immediately dismiss them.

  now i am giving myself permission to explore them further.... a lot of attention is given to how big the sacrifice was on the part of jesus and god when jesus laid down his life.

  as the story goes, jesus gave his life for our sins and then was miraculously raised back to life a couple of days later.. consider this.

  I don't really understand the logic in Jesus dying as a sacrifice at all. I mean, God already changed the rules for forgiveness of sins when he sacrificed his son. Why not just say - "Okay humans your sins are now forgiven if you ask." Why the need to have his son tortured and murdered. What the hell is that supposed to prove?

  does anyone know why people say as jws you can't have guns.

  i've asked people at the hall and they say jws aren't supposed to have guns.

  i asked them why, and they all say just because we're not supposed to.

  *** w83 7/15 p. 25 pars. 14-16 "Seek Peace and Pursue It" ***Would it be fitting for the Christian to possess firearms for the purpose of hunting animals for food? Since the Flood, God has permitted the killing of animals for food, though the blood must be poured out on the ground, not eaten. (Genesis 9:3, 4; Deuteronomy 12:23-25) When allowed by local law, some Witnesses keep guns for protection against wild animals or for shooting game. (Matthew 22:21) To them this may be an important or practical source of food. But never should anyone think that Jehovah would approve of taking animal life for sport, for the thrill of killing—as has been the way with ancient and modern "Nimrods." Since "the soul of the flesh is in the blood," this is precious in Jehovah’s sight.—Leviticus 17:11, 14.

  If a sizable number of Witnesses in a congregation should be disturbed in that someone is hunting animals merely for sport, and not for obtaining food, he might not be in position to receive special service privileges, because of his offensive reputation.—1 Timothy 3:2.

  It is similar if one of Jehovah’s Witnesses insists on carrying or having firearms for protection against humans, or on learning the martial arts. The spiritual elders should take immediate steps to counsel and help him to remedy the situation. (Micah 4:3) Anyone who thus continues to carry personal arms or otherwise equips himself to become "a smiter" would cease to qualify for special privileges in the congregation.—1 Timothy 3:2, 3.

  Both my father and his best friend (CO) have concealed carry permits and carry in service. My dad is never without his sidearm. KH and all. We always had guns growing up, hunted, went to the range and learned tactical self defense with every sort of legal fire arm imaginable.

  i've been working on a response to this for the last couple of months and am just curious as to who christians who are ex-witnesses interpret the faithful and discreet slave to be, and the parable in general.. .

  i guess i'm just looking to round out my argument and have a few different angles.
