The elders used the WTS's legal counsel and trusted WTS legal counsel to protect their interests. Absolutely insane, in my mind, when their house and life savings would be on the line.

They do a good job at perpetuating the JW sterotype too - that "23 year old christain" is about the most streotypical goody-two-shoe JW lad I've ever seen. We've all know this elder's kid before.
His 'addiction' probably involved playing Pong once for 10 mins. "Oh horrors!!! Satan alomst got me!!!! Eeeeeeeeek!"

Trust me, once the payola starts rolling in on the Catholic cases (and it is begining to now), it will wake up a bunch more JWs/x-JWs into realizing they too can take on the WTBTS and win. Also, there are a few lawyers involved in the Catholic stuff right now that might look to other groups once the Catholic cases wind down. The elders will bear the brunt of this. The WTBTS will cut bait and run fast.

i just saw president bush on the tv.
he was saying in his very slow way of speaking "we must defend ourselves against the enemies of freedom"and "a great evil is upon the world".
and all of a sudden i had this thought "what if the jw are right..."
Fact is humans have the ability to destroy themselves or make life on this ball very unpleasant for everyone (left alive). But that has NO bearing on a mythical sky-daddy's perhaps manipulation on people. It's just humans doing what we have always done. We just have bigger and badder toys now. If we kill ourselves it will have been by our own doing.

does anyone know of any information comparing the growth rate of jehovah's witnesses to say the mormons or other "recruit-oriented" religons?
Of course the assumption is that 1 hour reported is 1 hour spent preaching, and that probably is not the case. However, the fact still stands that doorstep recruitment is not working. So why do they keep on doing it?
Because it give the ground troops a mindless task to concentrate on, a tangible effort that makes them feel good about themselves. Feeling guilty about something? Go in FS, maybe god will forgive. It gives the elders/WTBTS a method to control people via the hour requirements, and a method to judge people to keep them in control. Turn in less them stellar FS reports = weak spiritually, the death mark of a JW.
Imagine if JWs didn't need to go door knocking. Since that would also negate the need for the Thurs (Service) meeting, they'd actaully have (gasp) time on their hands to think, enjoy life, further themselves, etc. All things the WTBTS does NOT want JWs doing.
last friday, one of our employees' home burned to the ground, killing all 3 of his children.
i began the process of taking up a collection, buying the card, etc.
all of us were shocked to the core for this man's tragedy and suffering.
Imbue, this may be true in an individual case by case, person by person basis, but you would rarely/never find a case where the elders would allow a JW to collect money / request help for another JW at the KH. Much less would the KH/WTBTS actually start/sponser a fundraising event for someone. Nor would any of this aid ever reach non-JWs. Jut to put things in perspective...
And in the rare cases where they do provide some sort of disater relief they do indeed blow their trumpet loudly in the papers, and JWs bragging about it to others.
as some of you may know my ex wife has been studying with the witnesses, and has allways had a soft spot for the wt teaching of neutrality in wartime.
ive been sending her information from this site with issues i feel are important such as silent lambs, blood,the two witness issue and shunning.
anyway she has been useing the information to ask questions one elder after reading information from here said that he shouldnt be reading apostate literature.
