Believers and their "Free Will" Dogma

one of the most interesting dogmas found among believers is the concept called free will- on the surface it starts out sounding reasonable, until you start the ask questions and listen to the explanations that are given , after awhile you realize it has no legs to stand on.

we are told by believers that god allows each person to make thier own choice and we are not robots and therefore we are able to exercise free will, the only problem is when you ask the question, what about when someone exercises thier free will and it harms someone else, why would a loving god allow someone the free will to hurt someone innocent, at that point free will sounds more like an excuse to give god a bye in terms of having to do anything- i read this posters comment and i couldn't for the life of me see any logic or reasonablness behind the concept of free will when folks get hurt like this person has-.

one of my earliest memories is of my grandfather raping me.

Yes there is. If that is your god I want nothing to do with him, and I do hope that he kills me, cause I don't want to live in a world of people who feel like that.

It is absurd to beleive that 'god' only favors people based on their religious affiliation, which thereby makes it absurd to believe in a god that requires worship. If there is a 'god' or whatever you want to call it (It call him Sky-Daddy) and this mess of different races, beliefs, religions, and entire lack of direction in human affairs makes him a piss-poor landlord.

As for him not oweing anybody anything, maybe that's true, but that means I owe him even less.

I mean, let me get this right. I get some dogs and breed them. I am their god. Because I provide them food and shelter, that gives me the right to allow some to die slowly from disease, bad conditions, etc? The right to pick some to care for and some to kill? Some to torture? Some to play mind games with? After all I don't OWE them anything. They owe me everything right?

If you are right, than I am a better person than god.

Your god sucks.

hello everyone.

i would like to share this with you.in the daily mail newspaper today there was an article about a woman who was so fed up of the jws calling at her home(which they have done for the past 12yrs)she decided to stop them once and for all,each time they called she told them she was not interested but they still came,so,the other day she went to the kh whilst there was a service and knocked on the door until someone answered,when they did they were not amused,the woman then started to ask completely irrelevant questions,she remained there for about 30 minutes then the police arrived to remove her,she went quietly and said she did it to prove a point.. paul gillies, spokesman for the jws in britain,said "representives did stop calling at homes if asked",he says "if someone states they do not want a visit we make a note and avoid calling",he also says that "we go to peoples homes because we are obedient to jesus's message,we want to spread the word of jesus and offer bible studies.if people phone our national headquarters saying they didn't want visits we would contact their local congregation and let them know".. i hope you don't mind me sharing this with you guys

just a quick thought - i am a firm believer in freedom of speech etc, but having been on this forum for some time i honestly can't say that i can introduce a doubting jw interested in true christianity to this board.

some of the deep discussions on jw doctrine are excellent, but everything else seems to be nonsense in my opinion.

why can't this site be more like the old www.witnesses.net which seemed to have more spiritual meat rather than backbiting, gossip, and rumour and even obscenity.. sorry for my frank opinion

aChristian, I read that post regarding the flood. I find that whole topic pretty interesting anyway, mainly due to the fact that I at one time beleived that somehow the entire planet's animal population was housed on a ricky old boat of insignificant size. Again, as I stated, since I think the bibles at best a collection of myths, I have no doubt that this flood story could be prompted by a large local flood somewhere, sometime. Floods happen all the time. Until we invent a time machine and go back to take a peek ourselves I guess we'll be stuck arguing over what some Hebrew fellow might or might not have been thinking thousands of years ago when he was writing in a language that we don't use anymore.

IW, don't count your chickens before they're converted. I have yet to be swayed in the least bit from my 'disbelief'

How Do You Deal With Stress??

what do you do when you're being blindsided from seemingly every direction and you're drowning in stress?

what do you personally do to counteract it?.

reading joelbear's latest post ("joelbear needs to calm down")reminded me of what it was like when first exiting the watchtower.

Remove one or more items that is causing stress. Failing that, readjust your attitude regarding how you react to the item(s) causing stress. By that I mean you may have to take an 'uncaring' attitude towards something, I.E. stop fretting over things that are not under your control. Needless to say this is a very hard thing to do.

Failing that - drink till you drop! (Just kidding on the last one!)

aChristain, no need to go into the flood thing again, I was simply using it to point out that while you say the bible is a fine guide to 'finding god' that that guide is in fact quite the archaic, contradictory, and just plain weird book that people will probably argue over for another 2000 years. Like I said, there are as many 'understandings' of the bible as there are people reading it. Hardly sounds like a 'guide' a loving god would make for humanity. If electronic / appliances came with 'guide' books written like the bible, people'd be killing themselves the world over from not understanding how to operated anything!

FWIW, since I think the bible is at best a collection of myths and legends, I obviously don't beleive that there was some global flood. But that IS what the bible describes - a flood that wipes out the 'entire earth'. All people and animals. It's pretty cut 'n dry (no pun intended) on that.

the other day, i was messaged by a young jw guy (using yahoo messenger, where i am breezyone2001; chat me up, gang!).

his opening line to me was, "why are you attacking the witnesses?

" i responded by asking him in what way i was attacking the witnesses, and he said that he saw my name in a yahoo club for ex-jw's.

no blood cards this year!

last night at meeting they told us to just use our blood cards from last year.

in the past they've always told us how important it was to get it signed every year so that people could see our current views as jw's.....doesn't this new arangement negate everything they've ever said in regards to this?
