As Leolia points out, the Romans covertered earlier version into a vicious torture device. The T shape is essential if one is to have a "seat", the purpose of which is prolong the experience of pain. The mode of death in "crucifixtion" is asphyxiation. In order to get a breath, it is necessary to stand up on the nail pinning the feet. To speed up death, the Romans would break the legs of those being crucified, making it impossible to "stand up". The legs of those crucified with Jesus were broken to hasten death because the religious authorities didn't want to profane the rapidly approaching Sabbath and so appealed to the Roman authorities to "get it over with". Apparently Jesus was already dead when they got around to doing that.

Any real proof of a single torture stake?
by lighthouse19something ini saw a show on discovery channel saying that maybe three beams were used, two in the ground notched for a crossbar to rest on top.
if this is true, then it would resemble a doorpost (like passover?
) rather than a t

The book of Revelation, the word of God, or one hell of a drug trip?
by free2beme inwhat more confusing and off the wall book in the bible, can there be, then the book of revelation.
it has all sort of odd things being talked about, all sorts of weird events that seem to only be connected when you twist the mind to the maximum of your imagination.
so many people, in religions, have tried to explain this off the wall book and yet refuse to face the fact that it might just be complete imagination of nonsense.

During a visit by a Seminary professor, Phd type, our Sunday school Class President shared with him that we were studying the book of Revelation and asked him what was the most that we could expect from the study. His reply was "The most you could hope for is to complete the study and still be good friends".
I believe that Little Toe is correct. It is clear that the writer had the book of Daniel open on the desk and borrowed heavily from the symbology contained therein. The central message seems to be the same as in Daniel. Hang On! God is in charge. Just as the Jews were under great stress from the Greeks when Daniel was written (about 167B.C.), the Christians were under great stress from the Roman Government, especially the Emporer Trajan.

no disputing the influence of the bible in art, literature, and even.
in the influence of the making of common laws.. separating the bible and religion this topic is not focused on discussing the watchtower's viewpoint.

From the Prophet by Kahil Gibran:
And a woman who held a babe against her bosum said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and he bends you with His might that his arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; for even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He also loves the bow that is stable.

Fluoroscope for the Feet !
by Amazing ini was watching the history channel today, and they discussed the shoe fluoroscope used in the 1940s and somewhat in the 1950s.
it was a device that used x-ray to help consumers see how their feet fit into the shoes they were buying.
the concept was that if one buys proper fitting shoes, then it will prove better for foot health, and shoes will wear better (implying that they will last longer).. then the problem statement: these fluoroscopes exposed the consumer to 75 rem per minute.

I remember the old Fluoroscope machines. They were in the local Thomn McKan shoe store. I seem to recall having my feet in them a couple of times. Wonder how much the salemen working in those stores received.

Leolia has given you the web reference that tells the whole story. Erasmus was trying to meet a publishing deadline and got taken in by a "specially manufactured" piece of phony scripture produced at a special monestary in Spain. After he had time to research it, he realized he had been "taken in". Unfortunately, this particular edition was the prime source document used by the King James Translators.

Question about sin!
by Carmel ini admit i haven't kept up with "christianspeak" or jw changing doctrins, so bare with me.
in another thread (probably several) one or more "christians" use the phrase "jesus paid for your sins" or "jesus covers up for the sinner".
what the heck does that mean?

Sin, by definition, is that which separates us from God. Since nothing can separate us from God, there cannot be any such thing as Sin. That may be why Jesus found it so easy to tell people that their "sins" were forgiven. What there is are errors and we suffer greatly from the consequences of the errors we make. It may be that the memory of those "errors" will cause additional pain at sometime in the future. The scriptures tell us that God is too pure to look upon inequity. That means he can only view us in the perfection that we were created. I don't think God holds us responsible for the things we do when we are unconscious (spiritually that is).

When I was stationed in Germany with the USAF I noticed that there was either a Protestant Church in a village or a Catholic, but never both. I found out that it dated back to the War of the Roses or the 30 years war when the Protestants murdured all the cathoics and vice versa. History records a conversation between the Commander of the Papal army and the Papal Legate when one of the large German cities was under siege. The Commander noted that 30% of the population was Catholic and speculated that all the citizens would claim to be Catholic when put to the sword. The Papal Legate is on record as saying "Slay them all, God will know His own."
