I agree with Gerard. Although the first choice odds were 1/3, the opening of the empty box changed those odds. They are now 50/50. Switching does not improve those odds. In flipping a coin it doesn't matter whether you flip once or 100 times, the odds on the next flip is still 50/50. The coin doesn't remember past results.

by AlmostAtheist inthis is a popular one, and i'm intentionally rewording it in the hopes that it can't be easily google'd.

Questioning Armageddon. How can wife hang onto the Bible? (If she wants to)
by Open mind injehovah wiping out 99.99% of humanity, babies included, is a "problem" or "question" that i think can be very powerful to use with jw family.
especially when presented from a "i just really have a problem with this idea at a gut level" standpoint.. but i haven't used it with my wife (yet) because i see it as a slippery slope that leads to "jesus believed the whole flood story" so i guess we need to throw out the whole bible.
(which, btw, is the very slope i have gone down.

The scriptures tell us that God made everything out of Himself. Why would you think that God will lose or destroy any part of Himself? Don't be misled. No one is going to be lost. The way home may be long and painful, but eventually we will all get there.

Why would anyone think that the ideas about What God Wants enumerated in the Old Testament have any validity at all? What if the picture of God layed out in the bible is completly wrong? I suggest you read "What God Wants" by Neale Don Walsh. It is an amazing book! Forget everything you have been led to believe about God. You can be sure that it is completely wrong.

Jeptha's Daughter- what actuallyt happened??
by Kudra inhi all, especially the scholars amongst you ;)a .
i was listening to richard dawkin's talk at lynchburg va and he was tlaking about how horrible the god of the old testament was- and he mentioned this: .
that when jeptha's daughter came out (and jeptha had promised god he'd sacrifice the first thing out of his house) that he had to sacrifice her as a burnt offering.

It is highly likely that he did sacrifice her. She would not have been burned alive, as has already been pointed out, the sacrifices had their throats ritually cut. Although they learned better later, they may well have practiced human sacrifice earlier. The story of Abraham & Issac is included in the scriptures to make it clear that sacrificing the first born is neither required nor acceptable. Muslims believe the story orignially had Ismael being the planned sacrifice and not Issac. Probably this is the more accurate account since Ismael was the first born.

My Dad used to get the magazine published by Herbert W. Armstrong's estranged son called "The World Tomorrow". Can't remember his first name. They ran their own college called Ambassador College. Sounds like the same bunch. The son was fairly rational. My Dad regarded Herbert W. Armstrong as a "kook". The World Wide Church of God was a big deal in California in the 1950s. There was a big fight over money when the old man's health began to fail.

I got my invitation yesterday and I've never even been a witness. They finally got around to thanking me for a sizeable donation several years ago to build a new Kingdom Hall and used that as a reason for inviting me. I only gave the money because of my wife and because I honor her. Wonder how they would react if I decided to partake?" I was raised in the Discliples of Christ who take communion every Sunday and invite all believers regardless of denomination.

Legal wrangling concerning the Governing Body today from my mom.
by restrangled inshe stated that the attorney handling her estate, because of florida law could not take the "death requests form, from the society" because of the case concerning terry shiavo.
(the attorney handling my mom's case is not a witness and she was furious that she was asked to sign a document stating that if the governing body changed their minds on something this would apply to her.. what is strange is that an outside attorney would have a document like this.
is anyone aware of this?.

I'll wager that Restrangled Mom's Attorney got the form from the WTBTS. Those "one size fits all" forms may not work in every state. Louisiana has rules that are different from all the other states.

British TV recently put out a program showing the fallacies of Al Gore's documentary. It pointed out that increased CO2 production is a result of global warming and not the cause. The greatest CO2 producer on earth is the ocean. During periods of solar activity, the ocean puts out large volumes of CO2. Moreover, if CO2 was the cause, increased levels should lead global warming periods. However, the ice core record shows just the opposite. The culprit; Our very own sun. The program is more than one hour long, but is worth watching: The web site is : www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxttv2C6B8pU. If that doesn't work, I'm sure a google search will turn it up.

Do you agree that, if there are errors in the bible, then it's all wrong?
by JH inin other words, if you can find a few errors in the bible, will you throw away the whole notion of the bible being "inspired by god".
example: if you find any error in the bible, will it take away the notion that killing is wrong, or stealing is wrong, .
so where do you draw the line, and accept certain biblical teachings and reject other biblical teachings?.

While I agree with your post about the bible, I very much disagree with your views about the teachings of Jesus. They are very practical and make a great deal of sense when you consider that we are all connected to each other in ways we don't fully understand. As one Philosopher said "It is not so much that Christianity has been tried and failed, but that it has yet to be tried at all.". It has been demonstrated that hating, in the sense of wanting something bad to happen to that individual, lowers the immune system and makes one more subject to accidents and injury and disease. It takes energy to hate! The problem is that what we put out comes back to us, sometimes multiplied many times over. Jesus came to show us that death, the "big daddy rabbit" of the illusion we are all involved in, could be overcome. If death is an illusion, so is all the rest of it. If you want to know what Jesus really taught without all the Pauline slant, try reviewing the teachings of A Course in Miracles.
