I think that it is resentment over English becoming the international language rather than French. I recall flying through France on a military aircraft in the 60's and landing in France for refueling and rebriefing on the weather. Although the meteroligist spoke near perfect English, when it came time for the official briefing he began to speak French. I stopped him and explained that I couldn't understand French. He was very apologetic, but explained that his government had directed that all briefings be in French. He had prepared such wonderful pictorial aids, that I really didn't need a briefing at all. I think that he put that effort in because he was ashamed of that stupid government edict. DeGaulle was in power then.

The French... Why do they hate us?
by email inwe've been talking about this lately on this board... this is yet another article from msn.com.. http://slate.msn.com/id/2077874/.
"much of the french opposition to american power arose after the fall of the soviet union made the united states the only power in a unipolar world: according to one poll, the percentage of the french who viewed the united states "with sympathy" dropped from 54 to 35 percent between 1988 and 1996. but french grumbling over u.s. power predates the end of the cold war, too.
as philip h. gordon outlined in the national interest in 2000 (during the clinton administration), "resentment and frustration" have marked french-american relations since the end of world war ii.

I agree. There is a saying that "God created man in His own image-and man promptly returned the favor". Thanks for the story of the artificial limb maker. I am reminded of something that Saint Satan posted in this forum; "The good in man is God in man, seeking to come through in expression".

The Real Me
by Satanus ini haven't shared much about myself.

Based on your posts, I would say that you have come a very long way in finding yourself. I always look forward to hearing what you have to say. It is clear to me that we think very much alike, but have come to that place by different paths. I was blessed with wonderful, loving, and supportive parents. My own journey of self discovery began when my wife decided to become a JW. It moved me out of my "comfort zone". Perhaps our teachers come to us in strange forms.

Legalize ALL Drugs. Yes or No?
by SpannerintheWorks ini thought it would be interesting to get a cross-sectional view of your opinions on whether all drugs (lsd, heroin, cocaine, etc.
be legalized so that they then became freely available to the general population, in the same way that alcohol and tobacco are .

Yes
The war on drugs has been lost. The damage to property done by criminals trying to get money for their next fix is many times the cost of the drugs. Drugs could be issued by prescription to addicts and would be much much cheaper than those coming from illegal sources. More should be spent on drug education and treatment. We could well afford it if the loss rate from illegal drugs were reduced.

Do You Know Your Blood Type?
by RAYZORBLADE inwith all the information we have nowadays, out of sheer curiousity, do any of you know your blood type?
for some, i know the blood-issue is a touchy subject, but it's interesting to know it.
you'd be surprised especially when the case of an rh-negative mother may give birth to an rh-positive child.

I'm O Neg. I'm popular with the blood banks, but often can't give because of hypertension.

Possible solution for the tax cuts
by freedom96 infor those who feel that the new tax cuts that bush proposed are are only going to help the rich:.
consider this to start: you would be suggesting that a family that has a teacher and a cop in the same family are rich.. second, if it is so horrible that the "rich" get more tax cuts than anyone else, here is an idea:.
ready?

The trouble with a 10% flat tax on purchases is that the politicians would soon raise it to 15%. I seem to recall that when I lived in Germany they added 15% Value Added Tax to just about everything. Taxing purchases is not the way to go. A flat tax on income would get my vote.

I agree with Saint Satan on this one. I expect to survive the death experience. I believe that God wants us all in heaven and that we will all eventually get there. There may be numerous stops along the way, however.

Operation Shock and Awe/Iraq
by MegaDude inbeginning in a matter of weeks.... .
iraq faces massive u.s. missile barrage .
cbs) they're calling it "a-day," a as in airstrikes so devastating they would leave saddam's soldiers unable or unwilling to fight.

Bigboi, Pleasuredome, & Saint Satan
There will no doubt be civilian casualties if "Shock and Awe" is used, especially since Saddam continues to use his civilian population as shields. But have you considered what the casualty rate would be if UN troops have to fight house to house through Bagdad? If the choice between civilian casualties and UN military casualties has to be made, I vote for the former. The whoe idea of Shock and Awe is to bring a quick end to the conflict and avoid the death toll that results from a prolonged conflict. The atomic bombs dropped on Japan probably saved countless Japanese lives that would have been lost had the U.S. been required to make a conventional invasion. Every effort is made to minimize civilian casualies, but it does happen. Smart bombs aren't perfect, but they do help minimize the collateral damage. Intelligence officers sometimes make mistakes in identifying targets, but on the whole do a pretty good job. War is stupid, unproductive, and wasteful. Unfortunately, sometimes there doesn't seem to be any other way.

I knew a guy in college that appeared to be a throw-back to the neanderthal time. He had all the characteristics of Neanderthals, unusally long arms, short, squat, and very hairy body, large head. He looked like he had stepped out of museum of anthropology. His nickname was "neandy". I always wondered if it was a case of DNA roulette.
