My JW baptism was accepted as valid by the Baptist church I now belong to because it was a baptism by immersion (which is a Baptist necessity), because I had made a profession of faith in Christ as a teenager prior to becoming a JW, and because it was under the old vows which stressed repentance from sin and acceptance of Christ as Savior (and not the organization). I have not felt compelled to be rebaptized, though the idea has crossed my mind from time to time.

"Public Talks" and "Committee Meetings"!!
by Kudra inarrrgh.-- in a funny way... .
i just got an email from the department secretary announcing a "very special public talk" (by this visiting scholar etc) that will be tomorrow here at school- .
stuff like this is funny to me cause so many of the same expressions that the dubs use are used in school here... it used to creep me out but now i kinda revel in using as many of those expressions as possible cause it is a kick in the pants...!

WT 'Lulled to Sleep, Bound hand and foot by Satan?'
by NeonMadman inan interesting quotation from the wt of december 1, 1922, p. 374:.
succeeding in this, satan would have such cast away much that the lord has provided for his people and has brought forth upon his table through his wise and faithful steward.
he would cause them to cast away "tabernacle shadows," the greater part of the studies in the scriptures, to disregard all the evidence of the second presence of the lord, and to deny, of course, that brother russell filled the office of the wise and faithful steward; to disregard the evidence, scriptural and otherwise, of the harvest time and the harvest work; to put aside all proof of the parallel dispensations and chronology, and hence to refrain from announcing the end of the world and the beginning of the reign of christ.

An interesting quotation from the WT of December 1, 1922, p. 374:
Succeeding in this, Satan would have such cast away much that the Lord has provided for his people and has brought forth upon his table through his wise and faithÂful steward. Succeeding in this, he would deprive such of the greater portion of the food which our Father has lovingly prepared for his saints to strengthen them in this hour of great conflict. Yielding to this influence of the adversary, soon such would be lulled to sleep while he binds them hand and foot.
(emphasis is mine)
Since the WT has long since abandoned "Tabernacle Shadows" and the Studies in the Scriptures, would the modern organization today not, according to their own teaching in this Watchtower, therefore be under the influence of Satan, lulled to sleep and bound hand and foot by him?

Are there any good WT books?
by PopeOfEruke inor are they all crap?.
what book published by the wts could be said to have some redeeming quality?

The Kingdom Interlinear Translation is very useful for showing how the NWT deviates from the meaning of the original Greek in several passages.
And the Bible in Living English is a serviceable translation made by a non-JW but published only by the WTS.
As onthewayout said, there is some good research in the Insight books, but nothing that couldn't be found in other sources without the possibility of contamination by Watchtower dogma.

Will the change to the Watchtower be followed by a change to the meetings?
by yaddayadda ini expect that a significant change to the meetings is on the horizon, most probably in the form of a shift of the bookstudy from a weeknight to a condensed saturday morning version.
some congregations already hold bookstudy groups on saturday mornings.
a universal change to this for the whole organisation make senses as it would help resolve a number of growing problems for the society, specifically, meeting attendance is clearly diminishing at the rate of knots in the western world, many elders are burning out and resigning because they cannot cope with all the pressure heaped up on them that so many meetings in no small measure contributes towards, and magazine 'sales' are apparently down and such a change would work in very well with the upcoming new change to the watchtower magazine in january 2008. .

Switching the book study to Saturday morning might have the effect of putting more pressure on everybody to go out in service. However, I suspect that the net result would be that people who didn't want to go out witnessing on Saturday would also skip the book study so as not to get the "evil eye" for failing to go out and preach. Overall, I'm betting attendance at the book study would drop dramatically.

RAPE TO SCREAM OR NOT TO SCREAM?
by Cordelia inok another chat i have tried to have with a witness, i heard that the wt has changed the 'understanding' on the rape issue several times, the witness i was talking to completely said it was false,.
i have no way of checking so wondered if anyone has the dates they changed from yes to no and back again so i can show them .

So, if I understand this correctly... If a woman is being raped, she is supposed to stop in the middle of the rape and go look up the Watchtower Index to find out what the Society's latest position is in order to determine whether she should scream?

I took in a meeting there once with two of my friends. This was way back before I got married the first time, so probably in the early 1970's. We stood around for a few minutes after the meeting, but when nobody said hello, or even looked at us, we decided to take off. Never went back again, either...

It kind of amazes me that they haven't yet replaced this book. Last I knew, it was still in print. I keep expecting to read about a new "Ezekiel's Prophecy" book each year at the DC. (Not that I'll be there to get a copy )
