The IBSA is (or was until recently) still Watchtower-affiliated. The groups that left the WTS took other names, like "Associated Bible Students," "Dawn Bible Students," "Pastoral Bible Institute," etc.; and then there were the followers of Paul S.L. Johnson, who became the "Laymen's Home Missionary Movement." So from the JW POV, the IBSA was and, as far as I know, is still affiliated with the F&DS. Look on the publisher's page of any but their most recent books and the IBSA is listed right under the WTS (I just looked at the Proclaimers book and it's there, at least as of 1993 when that was published). The most recent books lack the IBSA designation, so I'm not sure if maybe they deep-sixed that corporation during the 2000 reshuffle.

Were the IBSA the FDS in 1919?
by Vanderhoven7 inwere the ibsa the fds in 1919?.
in 1919 the organization that claims appointment was known as the international bible student association (ibsa).
witnesses have since claimed a "cleansing" that lasted into the early 30s.

Would the holy spirit appoint an elder this stupid? Not likely!
by venusinfauxfurs inyou learn something new in the kingdom hall every week.... .
i told an elder that i'm not going out in field service yet but god knows why that is and it's between him and i (translation: jehovahs witnesses are not the truth and it's a colossal waste of time) and i assume the elder took it to mean i want to do it but can't for some reason because he said "jehovah doesn't know that though.
he has to see you out there in field service to know that you're serious.

That's not inconsistent with JW teaching, since they believe that Jehovah really doesn't know the future fully. He didn't know, for example, that Adam would sin, or who will be ultimately saved. According to WT teaching, Jehovah chooses not to know certain things about the future so as to allow free will in his creatures. Such a deity is timebound, and not all-knowing and eternal as the God of Christianity is.
Further, they believe that Jehovah doesn't even fully know the present, since they take his words to Abraham in Genesis 22:12 ("He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.") to mean that Jehovah really didn't know before that what was in Abraham's heart. Most commentators understand this expression as an anthropomorphism, not an indication of a lack of knowledge on God's part. But the WT's Jehovah is not quite on the same level.
I remember Dr. Ron Nash speaking at a conference once about open theists, who believe, as the WTS teaches, that God does not know the future fully. His remark, which I thought was pretty witty, was , "If I had a God like that, I'd want to pray for him."

Once you've seen the man behind the curtain, it's pretty hard to go back to believing in the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.

JW's and music
by Pink Floyd ini really resent the fact that the wt looked down upon alot of music.
rap was considered violent.
heavy metal was satanic.

The WTS is always against whatever music is currently popular among teens. If you go back to the 50s, you'll find articles about how evil jazz is and how true Christians should avoid it. In the 60s it was rock and roll, in the 70s disco, in the 80s, heavy metal, etc etc. They are all about keeping the young people from enjoying their lives.

A City Overseer was just a person who was appointed to coordinate activities and issues between congregations when there was more than one congregation in a city. In theory, it wasn't a power position like that of circuit overseer. However, the city overseer tended to be one of the longer-term, more powerful elders among the congregations in the city. I've never seen a case, however, where he had significant influence in any congregation other than his own just by virtue of being the city overseer.

Aren't these basically the same as the old "Flock" book? I thought that book basically just bound the three booklets into a hard cover? If they are different, I'd like to have them.

Power of attorney of transfusion issues in the UK
by trailerfitter inhi you wonderful people, i have a serious question.
when my wife finally gets baptised will she have to sign the power of attorney over to the jws automatically or this a voluntary thing?
i am concerned being a none bleiever that she will undermine my authority on this issue.

The thing is that they also use the Blood document as an informal form of JW ID. If you go to Bethel and want to get a Watchtower Library CD, for example (which is supposed to be for JWs only), they will ask to see your blood doc as a proof that you are a JW. So it does involve more than just the blood issue. While it is technically voluntary, it's clear that everyone is expected to carry one.
