There was a period of time when I was young when we had ghosts in the house. Noises, doors opened and closed, ghosts were seen.
One evening when my parents were alone in the house they heard a commotion in the upstairs bathroom my mother and father looked at each other puzzled as to how someone had gotten into the house, they then heard someone come out the bathroom and coming down the stairs my father grabbed the kitchen stool he was sitting on and went out to confront the intruder but nobody was there. For some reason there seemed to be a connection with the hallway and stairs as several things occurred there but not all.

So what types of people actually flourish under the JW regime?
by Julia Orwell ini sure as eggs know which types don't:.
creative types: to do well at a creative industry one must dedicate a lot of time to developing one's talent, and as a jw one simply doesn't have time.
since writing a story or painting a picture doesn't contribute in any way to prestudy, meetings or fs results it's considered useless anyway.

i've seen lots of different people. some hippies and a former fascist. families that lived in big houses in good neighbourhoods and very poor people who became JW's. the fascist left it. the hippy and the fascist became elders.
flourish. i don't know.

it's not easy raising kids. one of my children needed a different kind of reasoning with than my other one. my father commented a few years ago when he was in his 70's about what good kids we (his kids) had been. a lot of that, from my perspective, had to do with being Witnesses and having a strong belief in God. my kids weren't raised the same (as Witnesses) and i didn't want them to be or have a relationship with their parents like i had. at times i have been angry and my child was left with no doubt that a line had been crossed and he needed to change. we have a good relationship. i think it is important to apologize when as a parent you get it wrong.

Glee. I can't speak for anyone else but when I was a Jehovah's Witness there was no glee involved in thinking about the death of anyone. there is a scripture i think where it says God takes no delight in the death of the wicked.
however the prospect of the end of all suffering and the raising of the dead in the thousand year reign of Christ with everything being back to how it should be by the end of the 7th creative day was something that was a happy prospect.
there were aspects that bothered me. 1) i probably wouldn't be there anyway. 2) if I was I wouldn't like it. 3) I would probably be the first person after Armageddon to be stoned to death. 4) i don't like fruit salad.

Question for believers.
by zound inthis thread is not to try and prove which position is true or false, but i wanted to ask a question to believers.
i'll prelude the question with some examples.. jw's think that their message is true and benificial to others - therefore they knock on doors and informal witness etc.
i think it's safe to say most on this forum agree it is not true and it is in fact harmful (particularly to children) perhaps harmful in ways that the jw is not in a position to appreciate because of his/her warped perspective on things.. on the other hand - if their message was true, and armageddon is coming etc etc, then you could argue that them preaching this stuff is not harmful (actually its morally ambiguous but nevermind that for the time being) because the ends justifies the means - it all comes out in the wash etc.. in turn if mormons message was false then we can agree they are misleading, lying, wasting peoples precious time and lives and ultimately harming children and susceptable people by spreading it.

How Jehovah's Witnesses benefit those humble enough to study the Bible with them.
by Stand for Pure Worship inexcellent material can be found within the reasoning book, page 328, para.2, 3. occasionally, i see posters make presumptuous comments like, "all you need is the bible", or, "i'm born-again, so there's no need for spiritual assistance from another christian", or,"i'm saved", or my favorite, "jesus talks to me directly.
" on one hand, i can't be overly critical of such ones because they do attempt to read and understand the bible on their own.
(acts 17:11) not to mention they're generally peaceable folks, just self-misguided when erroneously believing that they can go it alone.

I think that it's a lot to do with conscience. I found that for me to be associated with Jehovah's Witnesses I felt I was showing my support for their views regarding 1914 and it's significance. One person suggested that I could maybe not mention 1914 sort of forget about it. I couldn't. It was from my understanding very significant to our preaching work. If I was not joining in the preaching I had to explain my reasons which I did and eventually it became better for me not to attend. Although that came at a cost of some friendships that we had in the congregation.
Sometimes we discuss whether or not we could attend again for the reason of associating with people we knew and were friendly with and have a bible viewpoint we were familiar with.
This we tried for a while some years ago and it resulted in discussions with some elders regarding different teachings and viewpoints.
The thing is that I would feel at this point a hypocrite to identify myself again as a Witness and this would go against my conscience. My wife and I along with my children regularly discuss christianity. I have some very close relatives that are very well read in theology and even if this were not the case there are plenty of books available for research along with the internet. I pray regularly and read the bible.
Of course I could be wrong with some things that I think and maybe your right that associating with like minded individuals can help to maintain one's integrity. I don't think it's a case of not being humble or presumptuousness, but rather it's a case I think of keeping a clean conscience by not being a hypocrite and this is keeping my integrity.
