Comments You Will Not Hear at the 11-24 WT Study
by blondie insorry this is late.. comments you will not hear at the wt study 11-24-02. october 1, 2002 watchtower page 17. cultivate obedience as the end draws near"to [shiloh] the obedience of the peoples will belong.

Once again, Blondie, You have done it again!! Congratulations for an informative commentary. I believe the missing fourth person in the 1930s photo is Albert Schroeder.
Did you find it interesting that the whole technical discussion of 1914 is now relegated to a footnote? It used to be that we would have whole Wt studies in deciphering the technicalities of the date, but no more. Using the footnote tactic has been used in the past by the society. It usually means that they are distancing themselves from a specific idea. Soon, only old-timers will have any recollection of the meaning of the date and there will be no further reference to the date calculation.

The Stanley Theater is an assembly hall in Jersy City. The Furman building is a factory building that has direct access to the East River with a priceless view of lower Manhattan. The Furman building is used as a distribution depot. It a couple of miles away from the factory complex on Adam Street.

Position on College Changed?
by Maximus inseveral have made outright statements and others have suggested that the society's negative position on higher education has changed.
'the society does not discourage higher education where i live.
' worse, 'apostates have made it all up--the society has never discouraged education.

Tinkerbell, That is such a sad story. There are different forms of child abuse and what you describe is, in my opinion, a form of child abuse. Unfortunatally, depriving children of education in the name of home schooling is not unusual. I wonder what Social Services would have to say if that was reported to them?

Even when I was firmly planted in the "truth" I had a problem with the no education rule. Without much fanfare I completed a BS degree and MBA while serving as a MS and an elder. I was able to take weekend classes and while I missed some meetings because of school, I stayed under the radar and was never counciled. In fact, I made it a point in any of my meeting part to give very pro-education comments.
I have a personal commitment to never not be going to school and am continue my education now by taking some Master's level tax classes at a local college.

Selling the Furman building makes sense for a number of reasons. There clearly is a down sizing. The Furman building is not close to the other Society properties and it't value has increased significantly. Besides the transition that Brooklyn Heights has gone through lately, the city is proposing a waterfront park that will run from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Furman property line. Note the attached website.

In the congregation I was associated with while I still went in service our PO would ask the householder in his introduction if he or she would like to be living in a paradise within 3-5 years.
Although I have no way of knowing, I am sure he still uses that number in his presentation.

I attend most Sunday meetings but have not attended Tuesday and Thursday for several years. The last time I went out in service was the morning of Princes Dianas funeral. There is no significance other than it was a memorable day.
I attend because my wife is still active. Although her activity has dropped significantly since I did the official "fade away."

The reality is that everyone knows that the numbers are fictictious. One time in an elders meeting when we were deciding who to recommend for eldership a name came up. Elder #1 said: "he averages 10 hours a month." Elder#2 replied: "You don't actually believe those hours, he is never out in service." Thus, the name was dropped. Although, a few years later the individual with the 10hour average was appointed an elder. - This was after I moved away.
So, if at least one of the elders knew the hours were fictictious, why did not anyone adjust the hours before they were sent to the Society?
I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. I had a strategy to round up my hours to the nearest 6. If I got 1-5 hours I would report 6. If I got 7-15 hours I reported 16...and so on. However, as a practical matter I rarely got more than 5 hours.
