I had read that the mother was a JW but the father was not.

If I had my life to live over again I would try to become an attorney. On the other hand, I've found that after about 10-15 years in a job it starts to get old and a career change can be a very healthy move, though it may not be the path toward greatest income. I've had four major career changes in my life and now I have retired and only do some side work to keep busy doing something.

Dune (1984) - er, yeah, lol
by LoveUniHateExams inso, i saw dune (1984) yesterday.
i knew it wasn't gonna be great, but deary me.
i'm not gonna lie - this film is not good, in fact it's laughably bad in places.. first, i'd like to know the thought process that went behind choosing david lynch to write/direct.

I just watched the new 2021 Dune. It covers roughly half of the first book ( also called Dune) of the Dune series.
I liked it , watchable, interesting to both fans of the book and non-readers. I look forward to the next one.
After the first book is covered, I’ll be curious to see if any more are made based on the remaining novels. The material gets progressively more obtuse the farther you go.

LOL, that's one WT quote I don't recall seeing before. I wonder what they would do if the list ran over 144,000

How can you have a deficit for a Circuit Assembly on Zoom??
by pistolpete inremember when after a circuit assembly the assembly overseer would come out right before the end of the assembly and make a special announcement;.
"brothers, we have a financial deficit of $5,000 dollars for our circuit assembly.
keep in mind that we have utilities and other expenses that need to be met.

I think they have a set amount of 'worldwide work' donation, sort of a quota, that they consider a fixed expense. It has little or nothing to do with the expenses that are directly attributable to the event. They also are still having to maintain their assembly halls, which are virtually unused but still need minimal heating and cooling, etc., so it is likely that they are collecting for those expenses.
In this area (midwest US) they had the assembly hall for sale for several years but no one would buy it. It is located so far out in the rurals with poor access to highways that it is essentially an unsaleable property.

Watchtower Disparages the Bible
by Vanderhoven7 ini'm looking for wts quotations that contrast with ii timothy 3:15-16 whereby they downplay scripture.. here is one from way back..
"...people cannot see the divine plan in studying the bible by itself...if he then lays them [scripture studies] aside and ignores them and goes to the bible alone, though he has understood his bible for ten years, our experience shows that within two years he goes into darkness.
on the other hand, if he had merely read the scripture studies with their references, and had not read a page of the bible, as such, he would be in the light at the end of the two years, because he would have the light of the scriptures," (watchtower, sept. 15, 1910, p. 298).

My own observation is that the JWs typically follow Russell's 1910 advice anyway. Very very few JWs read the Bible contiguously from front to back, or even any of the individual books from beginning to end. If they did, they would soon realize how wrong the JW theology is. But they do read the WT literature, discuss the exact wording amongst themselves, etc. I thought when the 2013 revision occurred, resulting in a Bible with comparatively more readable form, more JWs would do such Bible reading, but apparently I was wrong.

Frank Herbert wrote the first six of the series. I have read all of these six. The remaining books, I'm not sure how many, quite a few, were co-written by Herbert's son and another writer. I haven't read any of those.
The first one comes across as a star wars-type adventure with a hero's story, but as you make your way through the rest, you realize it is a harshly critical portrayal or societal problems, placed in a science-fiction universe. Heroes, charismatic leaders, use of religion as a control mechanism, ecological disaster, sexual roles, you name it, Herbert really had a lot of social commentary.
Some, after reading the first novel, have claimed it was just another version of the White Savior theme. Just reading the first one might give that impression, but the remaining novels, if read, make it clearer that it is a criticism and damnation of the charismatic leader theme.

I showed on of my JW (True Believers) that Kingdom Halls will be opening soon. He had a fit!
by pistolpete inso i showed one of my older uncles the link on jw.org.. https://www.jw.org/en/news/jw/region/global/the-governing-body-announces-that-some-in-person-meetings-will-resume-in-select-areas/.
keep in mind that this is one of the relatives that is a true believer and used every excuse you can think of for the cancellation of all kingdom hall meetings.
and he also used every scriptural argument you can make up to justify the end of the door to door ministry.

In some parts of the world, many people do not have electricity, let alone internet and ipads, etc. So they have been basically without meetings at all. Maybe these places are what they are planning to reopen.
