It's curious how people like this keep coming up. I've read a bit about P S L Johnson and even had some of his books at one time. This guy sounds much the same.

Awakes says playing Chess is evil not for Witnesses!
by Witness 007 inawake 73 3/23 p.12 "the spirit of compatition between players can lead to unpleasant circumstances...in some homes tensions linger longer then checkmate.
chess is a game of war a play substitute for the art of war...danger of stirring up compatiton and hostility to one another something the bible warns christians to avoid.
what effect does playing chess have on you is it wholesome?

I love chess, which you can see from my avatar. I've played in USCF tournaments and it is great fun. Some of my best friendships have developed over the chessboard.
The '70s WT article was written during the 'Fischer' boom after the '72 Fischer-Spassky match was top news. Lots of people were introduced to chess at that time in the US. There's never been anything like it afterwards. As is usually the case, the WT discourages anything which 1) results in JWs making friends in a non JW context, and 2) takes time and energy away from the WT treadmill activities. Anything which does these two things will bring down the WT ire.

The Ukraine invasion is reminiscent of Budapest 1956 and Prague 1968. I'm more than a little worried where this is heading.

Are Jehovahs Witnesses a cult?
by GoverningBody inthis question has been presented many times throughout the years.
somewhat recently, there has been much talk surrounding the "bite method" :.
"bite” stands for behavior, information, thought, and emotional control.. some examples were thrown at me, such as the decisions of who we associate with, discouraging any worldy media, encouraging our brothers and sisters to report any of our misbehaviours to the elders, our rejection of criticism on the truth, shunning etc.. what do we think about this?.

I view is as more of a spectrum, rather than a simple yes or no question. There have been quite a number of groups of people, some religious, some political, that have erupted into the news; Jonestown, Waco, Manson, etc. Invariably when studied, these groups have certain characteristics that they use to control members and maintain the groupthink. It is a bit alarming to read these characteristics and see elements of it in your own life. It might be in your church (JWs as well), it might be at work (corporate jobs particularly), it might even be your club or card-playing buddies. JWs are definitely somewhere on the spectrum, worse than most, but not the worst.

I viewed the video concerning Andrew Thomson's complaint and I think it is frivolous.
He wrote an article in which he referenced the NWT as his primary Bible translation and the article was rejected. One reason for the rejection was the editor's statement that the NWT translators lacked credentials. So Thomson claims he lost income due to the NWT and the WT not publishing the credentials of the translators.
Seems silly to me.

I think it is understandable they don't want to indiscrimately give them away at the cart witnessing, where some of them might be picked up by someone and then thrown away. I'm sure they are one of the most expensive books that the WT produces. On the other hand, at least where I live (midwest US), most people have some type of device nowadays to use the online version (I haven't seen a JW use a real Bible in quite a while), but in lots of other countries that isn't the case. Having devices and cell/internet access is a luxury for the rich. Having a physical Bible in their language is more significant to those in less developed countries.

Have you ever thought about this statistic?
by psyco inforgetting for a moment the past, let us imagine that now we are about 8,000,000,000 people in the world and jws are about 8,000,000.8,000,000 / 8,000,000,000 = 0.1%.this means that satan can mislead 99.9% (100 - 0.1) of the people in the world.after 1,000 years, when humankind will be perfect again, since "the number of these is as the sand of the sea" (revelation 20:8), once again a huge amount of perfect people will get misled by satan.if the reason for this big number was because of the imperfection, that means adam and eve's fault, not so many "perfect" people should get misled by satan in the future paradise.so, could you think that 99.9% of the perfect angels are demons misled by satan?
if not, why is satan able or allowed to mislead so many more (imperfect and) perfect humans than angels?another question is: if god "does not desire anyone to be destroyed" (2 peter 3:9), why does he allow satan to be able to mislead 99.9% of people since he knows in advance that "many, i tell you, will seek to get in but will not be able" (luke 13:24), and "the number of these is as the sand of the sea" (revelation 20:8), and "go in through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are finding it" (matthew 7:13, 14)?
should not it be the other way around as a logical statistic?

I remember making a comment in the WT (when the worldwide report was the subject of discussion) to the effect that of the five most populated countries in the world, four were virtually untouched by the WT. It went over like a lead balloon.
In order of population China, India, US, Indonesia, Pakistan. Of these, only the US has a significant representation of JWs, but the five countries together represent about 45% of the world population. At the time I made the comment, China and Indonesia were under ban and didn't appear in the report, at least explicitly by name. Looking at the 2021 report, China is still absent but the other four countries are listed. India, Indonesia, and Pakistan together are showing around 86,000 JWs, compared to the US with 1,256,000. Since China is not listed, I don't know how many JWs are there but it must be less than the 212,000 shown for '33 other lands'.
There are a number of reasons for this that come to mind. One is the effectiveness or lack therof of the Christian missionaries in the preceding centures (1600's-1800's), which laid the foundation for the JWs. Related to this is the prevalence of non-Christian faiths. India, Indonesia, and Pakistan have been remarkably resistant to Western missionaries, including JWs. Government action in the 1900's in China and Indonesia has been significant in keeping the JWs out.

What's the deal with Cheese and Apple Danishes at conventions.
by pistolpete inthis was before my time, but there was this post that had 308 comments testifying that the best thing of being a jehovah witness back in the day was the convention's meals.

The assembly food disappeared about the same time the donation-for-literature started (1990 in the US). I reckon the taking of money for food fell into the same legal issue.
I was always surprised they never had (to my knowledge) a food poisoning event. Large church gatherings have always been susceptible to food quality issues.
