Yep, Fort Myers it is! Jet Blue stadium will only be about 1 mile from my house - as a crow flies.

I help arrange tea party rallies in southern Mississippi. Our only message is that we want a balanced federal budget. So, tell me how a balanced federal budget is "extreme right winger".
lifeisgood - I realize that that is the target message and you, along with your immediate tea party associates may stick to that, but on a national level, tea party influence has been bent the agenda of some tea party backed candidates that attained office, such as the Wisconsin Governor. His agenda clearly goes beyond the scope of simply balancing budgets. THAT is what I was referring to. That is taking a much more right wing ideological stance as opposed to simply balancing the state budget. Same here in Florida. The governor, another tea party backed candidate, clearly has the interests of big business at heart rather than simple budget balancing. I'm really trying to be objective and I don't necessarily disagree with all of the broad brush tea party ideas. I consider myself a fiscal conservative that's socially liberal - I know...a walking contradiction - but I refuse to accept that the two are mutually exclusive.

I think that, while this is a high control religion, they aren't really any better or any worse than any other religion. Sure, the shunning thing sets them apart, but I think that education is the key. Whether it's converting to JWs, Mormons, or any other religion, there should be a warning label or some way for people to be educated about the risks - kind of like the warning on tobacco products. If people still want to walk into those risks knowingly, that's all on them. I do still believe in free speech and I'm not crazy about a government who says what its people can and can't read. Sorry, but you can't legislate away stupidity.

I think that there are many of us who come here to have that connection with others with shared experiences. For some, like myself, who have children still "in", it's not such an easy thing to just put it behind when it affects a part of our lives we care deeply about. As you can see from my post history, I come and I go...it depends on my emotional state at the time. I've been here for 8 years or so - off and on. Some times I feel more drawn to associate (virtually) with those who are here. There are lots of regulars who've been here as long or longer than I, but I've seen many who've come and gone during that time as well. The journey is incredibly personal. I'd like to think that my coming here is more about lending support to others who are on their exit journey rather than my being stuck in time in my own exit (which started 13 or 14 years ago).

Haha! I'm just glad that Spring training is over --- FINALLY! All those Sox fans who say "wicked awesome" and the like and who clog up our roads are gone for another 9 months! This morning, the traffic was so much lighter - it was a breath of fresh air. The only downside - next year when they are back for Spring Training, my taxes will be going to the new Stadium that they had to have - and it's just down the road from my house. GRRRR. I'll have to put up with their "wicked stupid" driving again. But for now, I'll take the peace and quiet. Oh, April 1, Sunny and 82 degrees.

I kind of take offense at your denigration of the coffee party. I personally identify with their main message. Sure, I'm sick of what the Dems and Repubs offer. I feel like they do not speak for the huge swath of people firmly in the middle. I am not a member of any party, but it's nice to see a group that does take a moderate view (or at least that's the view of most I've had contact with) that is somewhat socially progressive rather than the tea partiers who tend to lean more to the right. I've enjoyed some of the discussions I've had. I don't want to see it taken over by left wing extremists anymore than I like seeing the tea party taken over by extreme right wingers. That just promotes more of the same of what we've already had. I'll continue my non-party affiliation and vote on issues the way that I see them and cadidates for what I think they might be able to do. It all comes down to local politics. That's where you are going to have an effect. I will hand it to the tea partiers. They seem to understand that in order to become a national party, they first have to get elected at local and state levels - and they are doing it. The only problem is that they have alowed themselves to simply become a fringe wing of the Republican party, and those masters will expect their due, in time.

Are atheists less imaginative about the unknown?
by sabastious inalmost every atheist i have ever come across i can get along with well.
i love to debate and talk about the world around us and they seem to as well, but i feel like i get a lot of "eye rolls" from the atheists i speak to.. it's ironic that i am six feet six inches tall because i would describe myself as a man with his head in the clouds.
it's up there most of the time and i feel at home when thinking of the future.

In the words of Bertranm Russell:
If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time.
The onus of proof is on the theists since they are the ones claiming the existence and proof thereof of something that there is no empirical evidence of.

Seriously, find clubs that represent hobbies that you are interested in. I joined a car club and met one of my best friends there at the race track. Definitely helped me!
