I'm also doing research. Just keep your wits about you, like anything. Historicaly, Buddhism has ahd its fair share of 'trickery', but tends to be idealized in The West. Not to say don't go with it. One group that seems suspect is the so-called 'New Religions' of Asia. Sokka Gakkai Buddism is one such group. They come from Nichiren Buddism. They have extensive outreach groups, particularly on university campuses- posing as a "Buddhist Club" or something simular. In their homeland they are seen as a cult- complete with polital activism, etc., - but you won't hear about that here. Buyer be ware.

by happysunshine inso... what is an acceptable reason to join a religion or live by a certain philosophy?
does it essentialy come down to "if it makes you generaly 'feel good', its ok"?

If I understand correctly, it is impossible to currently have 'ultimate truth'. Even crazy religions grudgingly admit that only God has all 'ultimate truth'. Furthermore, all 'science' is essentially based on that principle- some theories seen as more acceptable and some as less- the dominant scientific community 'feeling good' about a certain theory. Never is a theory seen as 'ultimate truth'.
In conclusion, can we all feel free in good concience to live as we wish and believe as we wish? Sincethere is no 'ultimate truth' that we can nail down, we should just pick whatever makes us 'feel good'? comments please!

Well said. The WT system is deleted up. I'm sure they just toss the prodigal son scripture at them, and tell them to shut the deleted up or els they'll get DFed for not following instructions. You can't blame the bookstudy people for being pissed. I mean, while they were cleaning toilets and sacrificing everything in their lives for the WT, Prince was singing about masturbating in an elevator and probably living life to its full limits. Now he skipps in to the WT hope at the last minute after his career has arched to collect the full reward that the WTS can offer. Meanwhile, the 'bookstudy' people stand by, wearing 2nd hand clothes, living literaly hand-to-mouth, hands dirty from all that toilet scrubbing, missing teath they couldn't afford from dental care... and a confused look on their face.

I think the author of this site has a lot of good advice.
However, she draws a distinction between "compasionate healing" and "hate". She awards praise for internet sites featuring the former. My question is this: what exactly is the definition of each? At what point does concern or a critic become a "hate site"?

Deprogramming your "Last Days" phobia...
by logansrun inraised in a religion that preached a massive, theocratic holocaust for the majority of mankind can leave you with more than a few mental and emotional scars.
i remember being terrified on new years eve in 1986 (i was 9 yrs old) because of all the talk that that year was the "international year of peace.
" i was conditioned to look at world events as being a sign that the end is near, sound familiar?

woops!
I think its good to remember that we can be totaly ethnocentric at times. Theres a lot of people who have no idea what we're talking about at all. They may never even see a bible, or have some totaly different concept that acts as their 'bible'.

More Comments, come on!
I get the feeling like the majority of people are just reading these posts, and not posting or sticking a decent comment in. Is everyone staying outside of the topic, staying on the 'safe' side of the nice neat wooden stakes and flourescent string?

Dude, you have to check out this site! I recommend pouring over it. It helped me a lot. I saw where and from whom the uneducated/biased Russell got his ideas, and where those people in turn got their ideas. Branch off into other areas of research at will. Thre is an answer to it all. Knowledge truly is power!

More uninformed museings-
I remember a gay guy telling me that faithfulness was more of a concern to him than a hetero relationship, beacause guys like sex so much they are more likely to cheat. I also remember a bi guy telling me that same-sex attraction was of 2 types: kind of like looking in a mirror, seeing yourself- or what you'd like to be- in the other person; or, confirming your atractiveness by an admirer. To me, the hetero relationships seem different, like how can you aspire to physical characteristics of a different sex person? It seems like more of a challenge to understand and meld with a different sex person.
Ideas about the porn thing: 1) female-female stuff may be seen as generaly more acceptable/desirable/whatever because of historical norms about carnal desires and sin being intrinsic in the nature of women, right back to Eden-fruit-gate. Kind of like interracial taboos about sex. 2) Also, because men are generaly more overtly sexual, physical sex between women may be seen as less common therefore more desirable. 3) More astheticaly pleasing because its less 'messy'/dangerous (no ejaculate, etc. - I got this one from a bi woman). 4) Hetero guys are afraid that bi/gay guys are going to treat them like some hetero guys treat women (bad- I got that froma Kids in the Hall actor).
Any ideas?
