Where to Worship???

i haven't been to a meeting in years but always thought about going back.

i can't go back now that i realize that i was raised in a cult.

i can't go to church because i have been brainwashed that it's false religion.

I live in an area where there are churches everywhere, I guess because I live so far down south in the US so I just went to church with my husband (he's never been a JW) and I was scared about going for a long time but then we switched to a more modern church and I feel more comfortable there than at a KH so I think it has to do with your mindset. Do you have religious friends (non-Witness I mean)? Maybe trying to go where they worship. Do you still believe in JW teachings? Just start researching different religions and their beliefs and attend where you feel most comfortable.

I commend you for still feeling like you need a place to worship God, I'm on my way to converting to Christianity (I'm non-denominational who happens to go to a baptist temple) but it's up to you where you go. Good luck, I hope you find someplace you feel enjoy going to. :)

Do JWs have a biblically normative relationship with Jesus christ?

i would say that that would be impossible...given that jesus christ is simply an angelic being in wts eyes.. jehovah's witnesses have about as much a relationship with the angel gabriel as they do with jesus.. and, no...tacking on the name of jesus at the end of a prayer is not evidence of relationship..

Pros about being a jehovah's witness

can you personally think of any pros of being a jws?

anything that you have experienced that was and still is beneficial to you now from when u were a jw?.

To be honest, there are some good points to me. As long as one sticks firmly to the lifestyle, one can avoid certain things: STDs, teen and unplanned pregnancy, drug/cigarette/alcohol addiction (as well as health problems those things cause), not spending a ton of money for Christmas presents and holiday decorations/birthdays...but that's about all I can think of.

Some things seem like benefits but are not really such as a big ego, "knowing" that one is "doing the right thing", thinking one is better than everyone else, or that the org. is better than everyone else, fake happiness when one has just been brainwashed, some of you know that "rush" you'd get when everyone was clapping at the end of a convention or whatever or when the music swells at the end of one of their bragging videos. But of course those are not REAL benefits, but they feel like it for awhile.

Oh, and I got really good at taking notes from being a JW, learned some good study habits and public speaking tips and I did learn a decent amount about SOME of the Bible, at least the Old Testament.

Am I still an Ex JW?

i was thinking the other day about being an ex jehovahs witness... will i always be an ex jw?

will i know when im no longer an ex jw?

what can i do to become less of an ex jw and more of a normal person (whatever that is)... for me, being a jw was a little like a cross between the firm and hotel california where i feel like, at any point, one of the friends will spot me and either accost me or report me to the elders.

I don't consider myself an ex-JW as much as I consider myself to now be a follower of Christ and whenever I decide to get re-baptized, I will then consider myself a Christian, not an ex-JW. I say consider yourself you, whatever is the big thing in your life, your main hobby, your main belief, whatever. If I had become someone not interested in religion, then I would consider myself an artist, because that's what I am. So consider yourself to be whoever you are now, not who you were in the past. I hope that makes sense :)

Witnesses have gotten soft and spongy.

thinking about witnesses in the past, when the witness work was banned, they went underground, continuing to meet and deliver tracts under cover of night.. all this due to their reasoning that they will obey cesar's law only when it doesn't conflict with god's commandments, such as "preach to all people".

now we see the watchtower telling it's membership to respect "no trespassing" or "no solicitating" messages, as well as condo bylaws that prohibit door to door visits.. watching them bend more and more to comply with cesar's law to give up preaching so that they don't get fines.

they've become more concerned with protecting their legal interests and money stockpile that the witness work is now more of a token activity to keep people busy.. one thing i don't know is, have they lightened up on phone witnesses with the introduction of the national do not call list?.

The JWs of the '30s and '40s would be horrified at the JWs now. Back then they risked prison and even death, now some JWs are even afraid to go to doors with "Beware of the dogs" signs. *sigh*

I would like to hear your experiences with being SHUNNED

i am going to put together a page of short experiences of how shunning has affected exjws.

you do not have to be disfellowshipped, even if you were shunned after being marked or after fading.

all comments are welcome, such as who shunned you, how long since family have spoken to you, what your situation is, why you are being shunned and how it has made you feel.

The majority of my father's side of the family don't talk to me at all anymore, after my father sent that letter I posted a couple weeks ago. Because we live over 2,000 miles away from each other (most live in New England, I live in South TX) it's not usually too bad for me, except that they no longer reply to my texts and some have removed me on Facebook. I'm being fairly cautious with the few JWs on my mother's side, letting them know I don't want to be a JW anymore but not really telling them I now attend church and want to be baptized as a Christian soon. They do contact me less, mostly letting me be the one to contact them, but so far things are okay with us.

I honestly haven't seen or any JWs from my old congregation here in ages, or the one I attended 2 years ago, with the exception of the day a sister and her husband knocked loudly on the door while my husband and I were taking a nap, scaring us and then they gave my husband the latest magazines because I decided to hide out in my MIL's room. LOL. I hardly ever see field service groups lately, it's kind of strange.

Christmas traditions

i thought it would be nice to start a thread with some of your favorite christmas traditions... especially for those who are just beginning to celebrate christmas.

we open a gift on christmas eve.

when i was a kid, it was always a new pair of pajamas.

This is my first year celebrating Christmas for real. I've been around Christmas for 3 years I believe. My husband's family traditionally always go up to my husband's sister's house and everyone comes up there for all the usual Christmas traditions. She makes cookies, has at least one very large tree (though I hear last year, while I was away, there were at least 2 trees!), and TONS of presents because there are a lot of nieces and nephews. I did give gifts the first year I didn't do much else. This year I'm going all out. I sent cards, recieved cards, wrapped tons of presents, gave each person at least one item, more for some, hung up stockings, got my first tree which is very tiny but I love it, and so on.

Traditionally Christmas Eve my SIL has everyone sit in the living room and each child can open one present that night, then for the adults there's something like musical chairs only it's presents, basically each person is handed a generic present and you can either choose to open it or pass it, the fun being that you don't know what it is and could pass up something you would have liked to someone else, it involves a lot of shaking of the presents and trying to figure out what's inside. I love it!

Christmas morning we wake up as soon as we hear whoever is up first, this is generally my husband's youngest nephew. Then they wake up everyone else yelling "Merry Christmas!!" and we all gather in the living room in our PJs and open the presents, hug each other, and eat breakfast. Then there's church, which I used to skip out on but now I'm going to go, and even dress up, then there's a huge Christmas dinner. Woohoo! I can't wait for all of it!!!

everytime i read a page of topics, i can't help but accept that the witness religion is such a fraud.. keep up the good work in exposing the watchtower society!.

Definitely helped, though it isn't the only thing that keeps me out, the gross lack of love shown to me by my JW family is what keeps me out the most.
