What did you become after leaving Jehovah's Witnesses?
by Garrett inhey guys,.
so, since my leaving i have been doing so much research on so many topics that it's been extremely enlightening.
not only have i learned a lot about the organization and what motivates it, but i have also learned a lot about the bible, god and most importantly, myself.. currently, i'm not quite sure where i stand, but i'm having some real issues with the bible and god.

I became aware of how little I know about most everything and how in the grand scheme of things how little it matters. -

Are we pro-shunning or against it?
by Simon injust to continue my theme about religious freedom and how we approach criticizing the wts, i've also been thinking about 'shunning'.. i think shunning is the most unifying complaint that most ex-members of religious groups that practice it have in common.
it is the layer that runs under every other complaint - whatever the reason for leaving it seems "... and i was shunned" can be added to it as the final rap on the charge sheet.. of course it seems like a no-brainer to many of us and we hardly ever stop to really think about it - shunning is bad, the watchtower believes in shunning therefore the watchtower is bad.
they need to stop it.

Jws already have the solution in place to protect the congregation if they wanted to "reform". It is marking. The congregation is informed that caution should be used regarding So and So. The decision as to how much association to have with the person (if any) in question is left where it belongs, to the others in the congregation. In extreme cases like child abuse the "Marking Talk" would warn parents to avoid leaving their children in his/her care.

Your body of elders - were they liberal, conservative or moderate?
by minimus inin my first kingdom hall, the elders were ultra conservative.
our presiding overseer used to be a zone overseer.
the second hall i was in was moderate.

I have been in many congregations. Although the elder bodies of some are much more liberal than others they all have one thing in common: In committee matters and promotions they are liberal with their own children and MUCH more strict with "the fatherless boy". -

sir82, You make excellent points. This is why most die-hard JWs leave because of lack of love/injustices that happen to them or those whom they love. Doctrines come and go but finding out about the corruption from the top down is waking people up. -

Kairos: "When we leave do our old friends ever wonder WHY? Or do they just chalk it up to Satan's power and go on without us forgetting we ever existed?"
I think the answer depends on how close the friend was to you, what the gossip is, or if they suspect you left because of no longer believing and are afraid of hearing something that would be faith shaking.
For example, I frequently run into witnesses yet NEVER ONCE have I been asked why hubby or I left. Apparently, we were the subjects of much gossip and false speculation but I can only assume that they don't want to hear the facts from us. However, two VERY close friends of mine did ask me why. I told one that if I told her It would destroy her faith so she asked me to keep it to myself and I haven't heard back. (it's been a couple of years ago) I have s l o w l y shared my reasons with my other friend and she is on her own way out. :)
When I have contacted JW friends who left the religion before me, they have always asked WHY? My conclusion is that they have no fear of loosing their faith - they already have!
